Sonny Gray is a road warrior. And a gambler. He needs skill more than luck, skill defined by making pitchers' pitches, working the corners, changing eye levels, and not walking the leadoff hitter, or falling behind in every count.
Dylan Bundy, another struggling pitcher with talent, goes for Baltimore, which is seeking its second 3-1 series win of the season over NY.
    Game time is 7 p.m.

He's going to need a ton of luck I'm afraid and who knows which Yankee team shows up ? We seems to blow very hot or very cold.

They miss Gleyber and Sanchez, they just need to get through the weekend and both should be back.

Jon, in case you haven't noticed, most of this year we are always waiting for someone to come back, and when some of them do like Tanaka last night, it doesn't prove an answer. Cashman is not responsible, but we are bucking what seems like an unrelenting headwind this year....

Coup, in case you haven't noticed, NY is 59-31 and well ahead of any pace or expectations anyone had before the season.

Tanaka didn’t lose the game. We need to win every game that we are up 5-3 in the 6th or 7th, period.

A crazy stat along those lines is that Chad Green has given up runs in seven games this year, and six of them have somehow been Tanaka starts.

Injuries aside, Yanks are just playing sloppy baseball. Not catching the ball at key moments. Running into outs on the base paths. Both losses in this series are direct results of those two elements.
If Sonny comes out tonight with his no-command stuff, the sloppy play will continue.
And it's temporary. This has been a very good team for all but three weeks of this season. But its strength is in the offense, and the long ball that is diminished when Torres and Sanchez go down. When Aaron Hicks (despite his recent surge) is hitting third, that's a big clue.
I don't think Boone has settled on his No. 3 hitter yet. Even when everyone was healthy, Boone tended to change his lineups every other day. Heading into August, I think he needs to settle on his lineup.
Torres would be my No. 3 but maybe that is asking a lot of a rookie. Boone wants a lefty hitter to hit between Judge and Stanton but Didi spit the bit and Hicks might be better suited at 5 or 6. Bird was the first choice. Reality struck and now he looks like a 7.
There is much work left for the GM and the manager this month.

Wow, didn't see that Giles was sent down to Triple A.

One clean inning from Sonny so far. Let's go boys. Right the ship.

Did you see why? He got shelled again last night and when Hinch came out to pull him, he very clearly said “fuck you man” on his way off the mound.

Sweeny Murti on Twitter made a good post about Bird

Greg Bird has played 131 games over 3 seasons.

    He has 491 PA, batting .221/.318/.461 with 26 HR, 22 doubles, and 73 RBI. OPS+ is 107.
Last postseason in 14 games he hit .250/.421/.500 with 3 HR.

He is 25 years old. In total, it offers a glimpse at his potential.

Might be time to pull Gray! Two innings of scoreless ball is enough.

Brett is killing himself on the basepaths, might we reward this with not stranding him ?

That he's not that great? I couldn't decide what my takeaway was supposed to be from that tweet.

My takeaway from that Bird tweet is that despite coming up initially almost three full seasons ago, he is still kind of a rookie in terms of MLB ABs.

Right, and that's a pretty decent stat-line for a player with less than a year of service time.

Bird saw 20 pitches in his two ABs, first Yankee with back to back 4 RBI days since Alfonso Soriano in 2013.

I love the way Stanton and Judge are swinging the bat. Constant gap power and line-drives with the more than occasional homer. The batting averages are creeping higher and higher.

Closing this out looks like a job for Chasen Shreve.

I used a big word in the summer of 1978.
