Sean Coyle is 3-3 w/ a 2b,3b, and a walk. Not saying i'd look to move him up yet but his numbers are getting ridiculous.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Pawtucket starter Chris Hernandez carried a shutout into the seventh inning while catcher Dan Butler homered and drove home three as the PawSox earned a season-high fifth-consecutive win, 7-4 over the Durham Bulls Sunday afternoon in front of 8,127 fans at McCoy Stadium.

Butler, Corey Brown and Travis Shaw each homered against Durham starter Enny Romero (3-9) to help the PawSox build a 7-0 lead after five innings. Hernandez (4-6) gave up a pair of runs in the seventh but still allowed only three hits in seven full innings pitched with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Pawtucket (43-41) moved three games above .500 for the first time May 20th. The PawSox are now 9-4 since June 17th and with wins in the first two contests against Durham have clinched at least a series split for their seventh-straight series.

Butler's two-run blast to left opened the scoring in the second inning against Romero, who allowed six runs and six hits in 4.2 innings of work. Carlos Rivero collected a two-out RBI single in the third to increase the margin to 3-0, then Brown went deep to center in the fourth for his team-leading tenth longball of the season.

The PawSox scored three runs in the fifth to break the game open. Shaw's fourth homer of the season began the scoring, while Butler's infield RBI hit capped the rally against reliever Brandon Gomes. Drake Britton allowed a two-run home run to Mikie Mahtook in the ninth (7) to bring the Bulls within three runs.
SEADOGS

Game Story

Sean Coyle and Matt Spring each drove in five runs, leading the Portland Sea Dogs (54-27) to a 13-9 win over the Reading Fightin Phils (33-45) on Sunday afternoon at First Energy Stadium. With the win, Portland completed their first ever 4-game sweep at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Spring (3-for-4) and Reading's Jake Fox provided the fans with an in-game home run derby. Both Spring and Fox homered twice and drove in 5 runs. Sean Coyle went 3-for-4 with 5 RBI and finished the series with 11 RBI. Reading hit five homers in the loss, receiving two from Kelly Dugan and Fox - Edgar Duran added a solo-homer in the sixth.

The 'Dogs are 27 games over .500 for the first time this season and lead minor league baseball with a .667 winning percentage.

Derrik Gibson (2-for-3) led off the game with a single, improving his batting average to .400 this month. With one out, Coyle nailed a run-scoring triple and scored on a single by Stefan Welch. Spring capped off the inning with a three-run homer to left-center field.

Reading responded in their first turn, cutting the deficit to 5-2 on a two-run shot by Fox. Spring would connect on his second homer in the third, giving the 'Dogs a 7-2 advantage, but Fox responded with a three-run homer to dead center, bringing the Fightins within two.

Portland put together their second 5-run inning, knocking Ryan Demmin (1-2) out of the game after 3+ innings. With the bases loaded, Colton Murray relieved Demmin, and allowed a bases-clearing double to Coyle. De La Cruz and Jonathan Roof added run-scoring hits.

Demmin took the loss for Reading, giving up 10 runs on seven hits over 3+ innings of work.

RHP Mike McCarthy (7-3) earned his 7th win, despite giving up three homers. McCarthy worked five innings on seven runs, six hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
SALEM

Game Story

Pat Light turned around the fortunes of his second half with five excellent innings in the Salem Red Sox's 4-2 victory over the Wilmington Blue Rocks at LewisGale Field Sunday afternoon. Light allowed just a lone unearned run in five innings of work, on just five hits. Christian Binford was the bought luck loser, surrendering two runs and five hits in six innings.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth. Matty Johnson led off with a single, and was bunted to second by Mike Miller. with two outs, Jantzen Witte knocked Matty home with a single to give the Sox a 1-0 lead.

Wilmington immediately answered in the top of the fifth. Daniel Rockett singled and stole second to lead off the frame against Light. After retiring the next two, Light walked Jack Lopez, who eventually stole second. With second and third and two outs, Light got the ground ball to end the inning, but it was bobbled by Jantzen Witte at third to allow Kenny Diekroeger to reach and score Rockett from third to tie the score.

But Salem would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Aneury Tavarez led off with a double off Binford. He scored on an RBI single by Leonel Escobar, Escobar's first RBI of the season.

Salem would add insurance in the seventh and eight. Tavarez led off the seventh with a single. He reached third on a throwing error by new pitcher Yender Caramo on a pickoff attempt, and scored on a base hit from Kevin Heller. In the eight, Mike Miller doubled, reached third on a ground out, and scored on a wild pitch.

Wilmington's best chance came in a 3-1 game in the eight. The Blue Rocks got two on against Madison Younginer and then Rockett loaded the bases with a walk against Dayan Diaz. But Diaz retired Mark Donato and Terrence Gore to end the threat. Wilmington picked up a run in the ninth off Diaz but Dayan picked up his fifth save.
DRIVE

Game Story

A devastating string of losses for the Greenville Drive (3-8, 37-43) continued on Sunday, as the Hickory Crawdads (9-2, 50-30) won 4-3 and picked up their second consecutive walkoff victory.

Nine innings wasn't enough to decide Sunday's contest, and following a 1-2-3 top half of the tenth, the Crawdads saw all four of their batters in the bottom half reach base against Raynel Velette (4-1). Joe Jackson singled to begin the frame, and Velette loaded the bases with a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Ronald Guzman then delivered a line drive single to center for the winning hit.

Cody Kendall (7-2) hurled a pair of scoreless relief innings for the Crawdads to pick up the win.

The Drive took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to hot-hitting Kendrick Perkins, who lined an RBI single to center to score Wendell Rijo, who singled with one out. An RBI groundout by Tzu-Wei Lin extended the lead to 2-0.

Greenville starter Jamie Callahan put together a quality start, allowing three runs in six innings, all on solo homers. He gave up five hits and one walk while striking out three.

Lewis Brinson did much of the damage against Callahan, lining a solo homer to left in the third and smacking a homer to right in the sixth. Two batters later, Jackson continued to play well against his hometown team, driving a homer to right to put Hickory up 3-2.

The Drive tied the game in the seventh when Perkins doubled with one out and later scored on a throwing error. He led the Greenville offense with a 2-4 night.

Brinson's two solo homers led the way for Hickory, while Jackson, Jairo Beras, Michael De Leon and Luis Marte all added two hits apiece.
SPINNERS

Game Story

Three Lowell Spinners hit home runs and the bullpen held on in the ninth inning as the Spinners overcame four errors to win their second straight, 7-5, over the Vermont Lake Monsters Sunday evening at Centennial Field.

Lowell (9-8) took advantage of a Lake Monsters miscue to get on the board first. After Bryan Hudson beat out an infield single to lead off the game, a one-out infield single from Sam Travis advanced him to second. It appeared Vermont would escape the inning but a potential Franklin Guzman double play ball went awry when Joe Bennie's throw sailed past the bag, scoring Hudson to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.

Vermont (7-10) took the lead in the bottom half of the inning on Justin Higley's fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to take a 2-1 lead.

The lead was short lived however as the Spinners answered with a run of their own in the top of the second, tying the game on a one-out solo home run by Deiner Lopez.

The Spinners took the lead for good in the third inning, again using the long-ball. After a one-out double by Mauricio Dubon, Sam Travis hit his second home run in three days to give the Spinners a 4-2 lead. Lowell would add to the lead in the fifth inning on their third home run of the night, this time a two-run shot by Guzman, his second of the season, extending the lead to 6-2.

The Lake Monsters would get a run back in the bottom half of the fifth inning and the Spinners would get a run of their own in the ninth, as David Sopilka followed a Mike Meyers lead-off triple with an RBI single, making it a 7-3 game into the bottom of the ninth.

As they had all series long, Vermont made things interesting in the ninth. After two of the first three batters of the inning singled, Ryan Huck followed with a hot shot single to centerfield. Hudson misplayed the ball, scoring a run, and a sacrifice fly on a ball Guzman initially fell down on while tracking, cut the lead to 7-5, but Ellis Jimenez locked down the win, striking out Dayton Alexander to end it.

Exciting to see Travis displaying the power - hopefully he shows a bit more patience though.  Still waiting on walk #1 after 44 PAs.

Is it just me or is there a huge surge in HRs/XBH in the system?

Isn't it typical for power numbers to go up as the temperature does?

Chris Hernandez is quietly putting in an interesting season in his second stint in AAA.  3.31 ERA, 3.56 FIP, GB rate still strong, though not the 2:1 ratio he had last year.  Then again, he's gotten very fortunate with HRs (just 1 in 68 IP).  At 25 he's not too old to become something useful, at least as a longman out of the pen (likely for an NL team).
