For those who care and have time, I think I saw an ad saying the PawSox game was on NESN tonight.

I'll be at McCoy, and would love to share my eagle eye scouting with everyone, but I'll be pursuing a high-spirited toddler all over the outfield seating when he's not eating.

On the other hand, the Trey Ball education continues: 3 ER on 8 hits and a walk through 3 IP.

Edit: 10 hits and a walk after 3.2 and he's done. Just one K

Owens gave up a bomb in the first, but even so I believe he is now the franchise leader in ERA, passing a relative unknown named Jon Lester.

At what point do we stop saying that Ball's numbers are high because he's young for the league and start wondering if he's just plain been a disappointment so far with the Sox.  BTW, he turns 20 tomorrow

I'm more interested in Owen's 2 walks than 4 earned runs tonight.  That's 6 straight starts with 2 or less walks.  He's ready for AAA

I'm very impressed with how Marrero has survived his recent slump and raised his average back close to .300.  He's having a great year when combined with his outstanding defense and quality baserunning, and seems deserving of a promotion

Yeah, about that, from SP.com:

JJ Cooper @jjcoop36 · 17m
Keep searching for a scout who has seen Red Sox LHP Trey Ball good this year. It's a tough quest. No luck yet.

JJ Cooper @jjcoop36 · 13m
Scouts aren't liking the delivery or the stuff with Trey Ball. Showing nothing plus, worries about his delivery and arm action

Harry Pavlidis ‏@harrypav 13m
@jjcoop36 is the violent head jerk still there? I saw that at the UA showcase and was frightened.

JJ Cooper @jjcoop36
. @harrypav Yes at times. Arm often trying to catch up to the body in his delivery.

The guy was a BA top 10 player going into the draft... And its his first year pitching full time.... I will give him the season before I judge.... Its not like the guy was ranked #50 and we took him where we did, he would have been gone by pick 12

Player evaluation sure is funny ain't it? So now scouts "aren't liking his delivery or stuff" and saying Ball shows "nothing plus" when at the draft he was heralded for his "efficient, low effort delivery" and "plus" change up.  Maybe I'll just never understand scouting.

And by the way, the guy many on this board preferred on draft day (Austin Meadows) has a career .315/.424/.554 line in the minors.

Austin Meadows has 1 more at bat than Ball has Innings Pitched. I wouldn't start claiming he's a huge success quite yet.

SCOUTING REPORT: Coming into the year, the industry was split on whether Ball had a brighter future as an outfielder or a pitcher. That’s no longer a question, as he has excelled on the mound to the extent that he could go in the first five picks overall. He has surpassed Indiana State’s Sean Manaea as the top lefthander available by showing better stuff and more athleticism. Ball’s fastball dipped to the upper 80s when he wore down toward the end of the showcase circuit last summer, but he has maintained a 91-94 mph heater all spring despite cold and wet weather. He still carries just 180 pounds on his 6-foot-6 frame, so he has plenty of room to add strength and velocity. His athleticism is equally impressive, as he does a fine job of maintaining and repeating his delivery for such a young and tall pitcher. His father restricted his use of a curveball before his junior season, but Ball already shows aptitude for spinning the ball and has an above-average breaker. He learned to rely on his changeup, which he throws with deceptive arm speed and nice fade. He has a fast arm and a clean arm action, and in a rarity for a high school arm, he has no obvious red flags. While Ball is a likely top 10 choice as a pitcher, the Padres would consider drafting him at No. 13 as an outfielder if he’s available and he would go in the second or third round if he were strictly a position player. He’s a plus runner with lefthanded power potential, though he has seemed a little anxious at the plate this spring and his bat speed is a tick down from its previous level. He profiles best as a right fielder but would have a chance to play center, and scouts rave about his makeup as well. A Texas recruit, he won’t come close to stepping foot on campus.
via BA... The guy was a top 10 pick, and the way everyone is complaining it makes it seem like he was a end of first round player

And 0 of those ABs have been this year, since he hurt his hamstring the first week of spring training and has had a setback-fueled slow recovery. If the Sox had drafted Meadows the board would be saying his success is meaningless if he can't stay healthy.

I'm obviously not ready to give up on a high schooler after barely a half season in A ball I was just astonished by the fact that the same scouts praising his repeatable delivery and plus stuff are now concerned about the same delivery and stuff (via those SP Cooper quotes above). Hopefully Ball is simply just having a tough time adjusting to the rigor of pitching every 5 days, maybe some more time in XST would've done him well.

Yes, I remember some saying he would be a high pick as an OF as well.

I remember seeing a highlight of him hitting an absolute bomb as a LHB. Wonder if the Sox are keeping that possiblity open and how soon they look into it...if at all.

NESN is showing last night's PawSox game again this afternoon (2-hour condensed broadcast, 3pm - 5pm). Barnes looked really good, hitting his spots and throwing strikes.

Also, Mookie made a great throw from RF to nab a guy at 3B. It was on a single to right-center, and the runner on 1st tried to advance the extra base after Betts bobbled his bare-handed pick-up. Bad decision to test him, as Mookie recovered and fired a one-bounce rifle that was right on target.
