I was at the first 7 innings of the Salem game today. Highlight was Ryan Zimmerman rehabbing in left field for the Nats.

Diaz had nothing to distinguish him from hundreds of other single A pitchers I've seen, except that he's friggin' huge.

Gragnani hit his first inning triple as hard as it looks like he can hit a ball, and it landed short of the warning track but was well placed on a line in the gap. Showed average middle infield speed in getting three bases. His second hit was a popup behind 3B. Seems like a potential Brock Holt, Jeff Frye type. Unfortunately he was DH so I couldn't say even the little you might be able to say about defense in a 1 game sample.

Carson Blair wasn't particularly adept at blocking bad pitches, of which here were many.

Aneury Tavarez looked lost at the plate. Nothing but weak contact. Mager was terrible at 3B.

Matt Johnson, who I've seen a lot of, made a great play going back to the warning track and diving flat out to take away an extra base hit. With his speed and defense he really could probably play the "Quentin Berry" role if a team have him a chance someday.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Pawtucket stranded 15 men on base and went 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position and Norfolk scored three runs in the first two innings as the Tides beat the PawSox, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park to win their second straight in the series.

Stephen Drew, continuing a minor league stint as he attempts to rejoin Boston, started for perhaps the final time with Pawtucket and went 1-for-3 with a double in five innings played. Drew will be eligible to be recalled to the majors on Monday.

Pawtucket (28-30) was blanked through eight innings despite leaving 14 runners aboard. Then in the ninth, the PawSox had the first three batters reach base against closer Heath Bell including a Travis Shaw double and Christian Vazquez RBI single.

Bell was able to bear down with the tying runners on base as he struck out Corey Brown for the first out then induced a game-ending 6-4-3 double play groundout from Mike McCoy. Bell was credited with his first save with Norfolk.

Norfolk scored a run in the first and then two more in the second against Pawtucket starter Anthony Ranaudo (5-4). Buck Britton's RBI double opened the scoring, then an RBI groundout from Quintin Berry and sacrifice fly by Ivan De Jesus made the score 3-0 after two.

Tides starter Nick Additon held the PawSox scoreless through his 4.2 innings of work despite allowing 11 baserunners - four hits, six walks and one hit batsmen. Former PawSox hurler Brock Huntzinger relieved Additon with the bases loaded in the fifth and recorded a line out by McCoy to escape the jam.
SEADOGS

Game Story

The Trenton Thunder (31-27) used a five-run sixth inning to take the series finale from the Portland Sea Dogs (38-19), 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Arm & Hammer Park. Despite the loss, Portland took three of from Trenton, improving their road-series record to 5-1-3.

Portland opened up the scoring in the second inning with two outs against winning pitcher Matt Tracy (6-2). Bo Greenwell delivered a two-run single on the ninth pitch of his at-bat, giving Portland a 2-0 lead. Greenwell finished the series 4-for-10 with 3 RBI and 4 walks.

Trenton got on the board in their half of the second against losing pitcher Mickey Pena (2-1). Gary Sanchez led off with a walk and scored from first base on a wall-ball double by Rob Refsynder.

Roof, who joined the Sea Dogs today from High-A Salem (.301 in 50 games) came through in the fourth inning, ripping a run-scoring double down the left-field line to score Gibson.

Tracy finished with six innings of work for Trenton, giving up eight hits and three runs.

The game took a big turn for Trenton in the sixth, as they plated five runs against Pena and Matty Ott. Pena left the game after two singles and a walk to Tyler Austin. Ott yielded a two-run-single to Sanchez, the first batter he faced. The Thunder received three more run-scoring singles by Peter O'Brien, Taylor Dugas and Dan Fiorito.

Pena worked 5+ innings, suffering his firs loss of the season. They lefty gave up six hits, four runs, two walks and five strikeouts.
SALEM

Game Story

The Potomac Nationals survived a furious ninth inning rally by the Salem Red Sox to win 12-11 in a wild game at Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge, Virginia. With the tying run a third, and go ahead run on second, Derek Self struck out Ryan Dent to end the ballgame. Dent had been 5-5 before the at bat.

Wander Suero came away with the win, after going three and a third innings, allowing just a run on three hits. Kyle Kraus was credited with the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) and six hits in two and a third innings. Self picked up his third save. Luis Diaz started for the Red Sox, going four and two third innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out three.

A long day of scoring started early in the top of the first. Matty Johnson led of the game for the Sox with a walk. Dent then picked up his first of five hits with a single. They both came home on a triple by Reed Gragnani, who would score himself on a wild pitch by Nats starter Ian Dickson.

Down 3-0, the P-Nats would scratch across five over the next two innings to take a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the first, Randolph Oduber singled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Oscar Tejeda. Then in the second, a walk, single, and walk off Diaz would load the bases. Tony Renda tripled home all three runs. Later Renda would score on a double by Ryan Zimmerman to make it 5-1 Nationals.

The Red Sox would take the lead back in the top of the third. Dent doubled, Gragnani walked, and Kevin Heller was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Carson Blair drove home all three with a double and the Sox went back ahead 6-5.

For the Red Sox, Dent, Gragnani, and Blair went a combined 9-13 with five extra base hits, seven runs scored and eight RBIs.
DRIVE

Game Story

For the second consecutive game, the Hickory Crawdads (28-27) used a comeback in the late innings for a victory, as they defeated the Greenville Drive (27-28) 7-2 on Sunday. Hickory clinched a 3-1 series win, while the loss drops the Drive under .500 for the first time since April 8th.

Trailing 2-0, the Crawdads put up three runs in the top of the sixth against Myles Smith (1-4) to take the lead. A single and a pair of walks loaded the bases, and Evan Van Hoosier followed with a sharp single to center to tie the game at two. Nick Vickerson followed with a single of his own, and when Forrestt Allday bobbled the ball in right field, the go-ahead run came home.

Hickory didn't let up from there, scoring single runs in the seventh and eighth and two more in the ninth.

Nomar Mazara led off the seventh with a double and came in on Ronald Guzman's sacrifice fly. In the eighth, Joe Jackson singled and later scored on Mazara's single. Travis Demeritte walloped his third homer of the series, a two-run shot, in the ninth to make the score 7-2.

Tyler Smith (2-1) picked up the win for Hickory by allowing only one earned run in five innings. The Crawdads bullpen was outstanding, as Angelo Leclerc struck out five in two innings, and Josh McElwee struck out four in the final two frames to earn his second save.

The Drive took a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a pair of Hickory errors. Wendell Rijo reached on an error, swiped second base, moved to third on a passed ball and scored when Jimmy Rider's ground ball was thrown away by Hickory's Nick Vickerson.

Jantzen Witte continued to swing a potent bat with a third-inning double to score Tzu-Wei Lin, who singled.
