STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Corey Brown's grand slam home run in a five-run fifth inning highlighted Pawtucket's 15-hit attack and the PawSox held off a late Louisville rally for a 9-8 win over the Bats in a Monday matinee at Louisville Slugger Field to take three out of four in the series.

Pawtucket won its third consecutive road series and improved to 11-5 away from McCoy Stadium this season. The game featured 27 combined hits (16 for Louisville) including 14 that went for extra-bases (three home runs, ten doubles and a triple.)

The PawSox built a 9-3 lead after six times at bat only to see Louisville (16-21) score the final five runs in the contest. Closer Alex Wilson ended the game by inducing a groundout by Bryan Anderson with the tying and winning runs on base.

Brown's homer was his second in as many days and fifth in his last 13 games played. Brandon Snyder (6) also homered for the PawSox (23-16), who matched a season high with nine runs scored. Snyder, Ryan Roberts, Alex Hassan and Ryan Lavarnway each had three of the team's 15 hits.

With the score tied 2-2 through four innings, Pawtucket took the lead for good in the fifth when Lavarnway singled home Roberts and knocked Louisville starter David Holmberg (0-4) from the game. Reliever Chad Rogers recorded two quick outs but then walked Garin Cecchini to load the bases.

Brown followed with a no-doubt shot to right, the third grand slam home run for the PawSox this season. Brown had homered in similar fashion on Sunday in the ninth inning to drive home the winning run in that contest.

Pawtucket added two more against Rogers in the sixth on RBI hits by Hassan (double) and Lavarnway (single) to make the score 9-3.

Simon Mercedes seems more and more interesting to me as the year goes on.  Anyone have an idea where his fastball has been sitting lately?  He's now got 29 Ks in 25.1 IP and a 3.6:1 K:BB ratio.  Add on top a GB/FB ratio of about 2:1 (which is consistent with his time in Lowell) and you've got a pretty intriguing player for a 22 year old in Salem.

If you're not reading Alex Speier on a daily basis, you should: http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2014/05/13/red-sox-minor-league-roundup-simon-mercedes-gets-his-shot-garin-cecchinis-development-challenge-brandon-workman-getting-hit-manuel-margot-shows-pop/

(Meant as an endorsement to Alex, than anything negative about you)

Anyhow, he wrote this up:

Right-hander Simon Mercedes, who had been on the back end of piggyback starts for most of the season, dominated as the front-end starter (in front of William Cuevas) on Monday. In five innings of work, the 22-year-old allowed two runs (one earned) on just three hits — all groundball singles — while getting seven strikeouts (all on swings and misses). His three-pitch mix — a 92-98 mph fastball that accounted for five of his 13 swings and misses, complemented by an effective curveball and changeup — bore resemblance to the pitcher who looked so impressive in spring training.

Mercedes had worked to a 4.87 ERA while primarily operating in the piggyback role through his first six appearances, though he had a solid 22 strikeouts and seven walks in 20 1/3 innings. While there’s a very real chance that, ultimately, he ends up in the bullpen in the big leagues, given the three-pitch mix he showed in spring training, the curiosity to see what he could do with a set starter’s routine — knowing precisely when he would be throwing his first pitch and developing a routine to be ready for the start of the game, rather than navigating the uncertain dependencies of entering in long relief — was considerable. That being the case, Monday may have represented the beginning of a significant opportunity for the massive right-hander, since going forward, the Red Sox intend to keep Mercedes on the front end of the piggyback for at least the near-term.
