Well, the starting nod for Salem went to William Cuevas. Perhaps fittingly on this day, he was crucified by the Sand Gnats. I assume he wishes he'd been thrown to the lions instead. Here's how his afternoon went -- all two-thirds of an inning:

Winston-Salem Bottom of the 1st
Tim Anderson singles on a line drive to center fielder Matty Johnson.
Adam Heisler doubles (1) on a line drive to right fielder Kevin Heller. Tim Anderson to 3rd.
Courtney Hawkins homers (5) on a fly ball to left field. Tim Anderson scores. Adam Heisler scores. [Nail through right hand]
Keon Barnum called out on strikes.
Jason Coats singles on a ground ball to center fielder Matty Johnson.
Joey DeMichele walks. Jason Coats to 2nd.
Martin Medina doubles (4) on a line drive to left fielder Aaron King. Jason Coats scores. Joey DeMichele scores. [Nail through left hand]
Nick Basto flies out to center fielder Matty Johnson.
Grant Buckner singles on a ground ball to left fielder Aaron King. Martin Medina scores. Grant Buckner to 2nd on the throw.
With Tim Anderson batting, Grant Buckner steals (1) 3rd base.
Tim Anderson homers (1) on a fly ball to right center field. Grant Buckner scores. [Nail through both feet]
Pitching Change: Kyle Kraus replaces William Cuevas.
Adam Heisler singles on a ground ball to first baseman David Chester.
Courtney Hawkins grounds into a force out, third baseman Mario Martinez to second baseman Jonathan Roof. Adam Heisler out at 2nd.

That's 8 runs (all earned) on 7 H (2 HR), 1 BB and 1 K.

Salem gets 2 runs back in the 2nd (RBI singles by Reid Gragnani & Jayson Hernandez) and 2 more in the 3rd (Ryan Dent triple, Jonathan Roof RBI double, Gragnani RBI single) against ex-Sox stud J.B. Wendelken (sent to the White Sox in the Peavy trade).

Salem Game Story

The struggling Winston-Salem offense erupted for eight runs in the first inning, only to see Salem nearly fight all the way back. Late in the game, the Sox had numerous chances with the tying or go-ahead man at the plate, but the final clutch hit was never discovered, and the Dash hung on to prevail 10-8 on Easter Sunday at BB&T Ballpark. The Winston win snapped the team's six-game losing streak, while Salem's roll of three straight victories also came to a close.

The pivotal moment in the contest came in the top of the seventh, when the Sox crept within two at 9-7 and loaded the bases with one out against Jefferson Olacio. Euclides Leyer emerged from the bullpen and induced an inning-ending double play from Mario Martinez, squelching Salem's momentum and stranding the tying runs in scoring position. The Sox brought the tying run to the plate again the ninth, but Reed Gragnani, who finished with three hits, bounced into a game-ending double play to wrap it up.

Winston's remarkable first inning unfolded fast and furious, with the Dash having runners at second and third just two pitches into the frame. Sox starter William Cuevas yielded hits on his first two tosses, then worked the count full against Courtney Hawkins, who launched a three-run homer to put the Dash in front. Later in the inning, Martin Medina belted a two-run double, Grant Buckner smacked an RBI single, and Tim Anderson crushed a two-run opposite field blast of his own to stretch the lead to 8-0.

Cuevas lasted just 10 batters, recording only two outs. But Salem nearly got him off the hook, chipping away by scoring twice in the second and twice more in the third. The Dash made it 9-4 after six, before Salem's rally in the seventh surged the Sox within two. The Dash added another insurance run against reliever Kyle Martin in the seventh, providing the cushion to the two-run win.
