Castillo is currently 3/3 with 2 doubles. Currently hitting .379 in a very SSS of 30 PA. Too bad that contract is a poison pill.

Decent rehab outing for Pomeranz by the boxscore: 5.1 IP, 2 ER on 4 H (1 HR), 3 BB, 4 K - 86 pitcher, 53 strikes. Will be interesting to get reports of how he looked.

Small sample size indeed. Jeremy Barfield started his first three games by going 0-for-11 with 8 Ks. Going into tonight's game, he was batting .105 thanks to two hits in eight at-bats over his next two games.

He is now batting .250 thanks to a 4-for-5 tonight.

Haworth hammered, Drive lose to Braves 10-6.

Boxscore

Hunter Haworth yielded four runs on five hits and two walks in the first five innings, striking out four. He came out for the sixth and had a horror inning, putting six runners on with all six scoring. The sequence, however, does offer some solace: E-6, Single (GB-5), Single (L-9), Bunt Single (1), Bunt Single (5), Double (FB - 8). Alas, that is still 10 runs (9 earned) and a current ERA of 13.50. Angel Padron struck out four and gave up one hit (which drove in the 10th run) over three innings. Alberto Franco finished the game by giving up a hit and striking out one in the ninth.

Juan Barriento bashed two singles in four jaunts in his first action of the year. Pedro Castellanos contributed two singles in five at-bats. Michael Osinski obtained a single, a hit by pitch, and two walks in five matchups. Kervin Suarez sliced a single and took two free passes in five sessions; he also had a stolen base and a caught stealing. Everlouis Lozada laced a single and was plunked by a pitch in five excursions. Isaias Lucena blooped a single in four at-bats. C.J. Chatham contributed a single in five trips. Marino Campana was hit once and had three hitless treks. Cole Brannen walked once in five attempts.

Salem tees off on the relief, defeat Buies Creek 4-2.

Boxscore

Darwinzon Hernandez delivered 5 1/3 frames, giving up a run on two hits and three walks; striking out six and throwing a pitch to the backstop. Hildemaro Requena relinquished a run on four hits and two balks over the final 3 2/3 innings; whiffing a pair.

Chris Madera managed a single and a homer in four matchups. Ryan Scott scorched a double, drew a walk, and dropped a sacrifice bunt in four sessions. Tyler Hill hit a single, took a free pass, and stole a base in four trips. Jerry Downs drilled a double and was hit by a pitch in five jaunts. Brett Netzer notched a single and was drilled by a pitch in five appearances. Jhon Nunez knocked a sacrifice fly amid three hitless attempts. Santiago Espinal and Bobby Dalbec each drew a walk in five excursions. Kyri Washington was withheld from the bases, striking out three times in four treks.

Buies Creek reliever Brandon Bailey yielded all four Salem runs over his 2 2/3 innings of relief. He gave up only two hits (a single and a homer), but walked three, hit two, and tossed three wild pitches.

Trey Ball with three scoreless outings to start the season. There's a sentence I never thought I'd say.

Wouldn't it be funny if he developed into a Andrew-Miller like reliever. Not without precedent as Miller was the #6 pick in the draft.
The fact that none of the multiple teams that aren't trying to win this year didn't pick him up in the Rule 5 draft makes me question how smart these management guys are. You have the former #7 pick in the draft who has been pitching full-time for all of 5 years plus he's 6'6" plus he's a LH who can throw 92 and he's north $25K to take a spring training look in an environment where teams that will drop 7 figures in a heartbeat on a 16 year old kid from Latin America?

I've said it all along that I think Bell will have a major league career of some sort because there aren't a lot of guys who can throw over 92 from the LH side for strikes. He can at least do that.

I'm glad he's still with the Sox. It's about time they tried him in the bullpen (although having him start all of last year may have been a calculated risk to keep his value down).
