Check out Bobby Orr videos. Back in the day the Bruins wore black on the road only.
You can tell they made the switch in 70-71, as Orr scored the famous cup winner at home in 1970 in a black jersey, but when they won the cup at MSG in 1972 they were also in black.

Jesus Smith could have walked clear out front and passed it back to the point. What the fuck.

Y'know, boys, there is an alternative to wearing a hole through the Y in Lundquist's jersey.

Also, my stream is significantly behind. Like, something on the order of two minutes.

That goal was all Lucic, just a tremendous forecheck from him. Krejci did a nice job banking that in off of Iginla's stick, too.

Iggy! Rags can't be thrilled with the results of their ass kicking being a tie.

www.nhluniforms.com answers your jersey questions. Home jersey is on top, road on bottom.

Warning: this is a time suck of a website, if you're like me.
Too late, I'm hooked. Wow, there goes an hour.

And yes, 70-71 was the change. Thanks for the info.

Teams switch home and road jerseys. Teams now wear white (or yellow) jerseys at home and dark colored jerseys on the road.

Ha, never heard this one from 77-78.

The NHL requires all players to wear their last names on the backs of their jerseys. The Toronto Maple Leafs would defy this new mandate, claiming that putting names on the jerseys would lead to a sharp decrease in scorecard sales. They complied (well, sort of) on February 26, 1978 -- they put blue letters on their blue away jerseys! Not amused, the NHL threatened to fine the team $10,000, and eventually their blue jerseys had clearly-visible white letters above the number on the back. Names on their white jerseys would soon follow.

Digging into the lucrative scorecard money, it all went downhill from there.

i wasn't really worried about Chara coming out of the Olympics because he only played 4 games in Sochi. It worked out to like 4 games in 3 weeks for him with the 2 he missed to carry the flag, which isn't bad. Man does he look off though.

And 03-04 for the switch back to the current state of sweaters. I thought it was earlier.

"Don't get caught with the wrong jersey." The NHL does a switcheroo of sorts -- dark jerseys become home jerseys, while white jerseys are the new road jerseys. It's the first season for that arrangement since 1969-70.

It basically came about because teams were wearing more and more black/dark third jerseys and preferred showing them off at home.

It was also due to making equipment travel easier on the road. Instead of having to take both the 3rd and dark jerseys on the road, you could always just bring the whites and be safe.

Personally I'd love to see them move back to wearing white at home, I would love to have the opponent's colors on display (since we would see a different color every game). Instead it's always black and white every game.

Agreed.

Weird that the Devils never had a third jersey. I guess Lou must have put his foot down on that at some point.

Amazingly, I think all seven Canadian teams have color in their home jerseys. Winnipeg's the closest with their dark blue, but no black jerseys at all.

On the podcast Jeff Marek said the original reason away teams wore dark was because they would go on the road for stretches and not always have time to clean the uniforms so colors would hide the filth better. Never thought of that before and found it interesting.

They also talked about maybe going to color for home and away after how great the winter classic jerseys looked. They would go to an alternate if the teams were similar color schemes. I'd be for giving that a shot.

Lou did. They are also the only team that didn't make a special jersey for their outside game this year, they just recycled the green ones.

I could be down for that. Or at least mix it up, seeing both colors out there definitely looks awesome.
