I was in the stands at that hole and took video of when that happened. Unreal moment.
Augusta National has extended the 5th hole to 495 yards from the back tees for the Masters. Already arguably the toughest par 4 on the course, it's going to be that much tougher...I wonder if the approach is going to be blind for a few of these guys?
it may be the air/sky or something but the camera work following the ball on the coverage this morning is not good
First time really watching Champ. He goes driver, 8-iron to 15 feet on a 560 yard par 5. Ok then. Hit is drive 360, 50 yards past JT.
His swing is literally perfect. He's the new age prototype.
And then on the other end we’ve got this impressive Wolfe kid with a Furyk type swing.
Was watching a bit of the Saudi International this morning. Haotong Li made 4 eagles in his round, 3 of which were on par 4’s. Wild.
And apparently Sergio got booted for “serious misconduct on the course”
Been a great 1:1 interview with Johnny Miller now on morning drive at the 16th green. Just a good conversation about his career and being on tv and golf. Some great questions from the guy interviewing him (who I don’t know his name) and it got pretty sentimental too.
I’m far from his biggest fan, but I’ll admit I’ll miss him on tv.
Sergio has been damaging greens for decades. Good for the European Tour for (finally) standing up to him.
I'm a big Sergio fan, I'm really disappointed in him. That's unfortunate.
I've never understood the Miller hate. Sure he can be a smug asshole and has lost a bit of his fastball, but he was as good as it got (outside of Ken Venturi) during his heyday. If you paid close attention, you could learn a lot from Miller during the broadcast, the guy knew how to play.
I'll miss him, for sure.
Yeah, I’m going to miss Johnny.
This is shaping up to be a great weekend. Fantastic leaderboard, great course and especially the closing holes.
It would be pretty funny if Fowler won Johnny’s last event.
Why isn’t Johnny doing tomorrow’s round?
Good question. I’d guess he wanted to stop after last season but they tried convinced him to do 1 last event and the compromise was 1 round.
We really dodged a bullet with Leonard. He is terrible.
Johnny is only 71. I'm surprised he doesn't keep a reduced schedule.
This was a dumb rule.
I don’t even understand the point of it. They went for simplification (which I like) then made this Rule way more complicated for no real reason I can see.
In other news, Rickie is locked in right now.
I tuned in at the tail end of the conversation and interview with Slugger or whatever his name is. What's the rule they are talking about? What happened?
The rule where caddies couldn’t stand behind the player. Denny McCarthy got a 2-shot penalty yesterday. He took a stance while the caddie was behind him, then the caddie moved and McCarthy backed off and reset before playing the shot. They rescinded the penalty today. Apparently JT was involved in a similar incident today that did not result in a penalty, but they haven’t shown it on the broadcast.
I admit it. I like the Johnny Miller song
The cheese whiz is pretty gross.
That was grosser than the cheese whiz
16 gets all the hype but the 17th hole at Scottsdale is the best on the course.
Tiger/Phil for the final send off?
Didn’t foresee a Marchand jersey working it’s way into the Miller tribute.
Damn, I missed it. Who was wearing it?
Doc Emrick. He recorded his farewell message from the Winter Classic and held up Marchand’s 63 as a tribute to Johnny’s 63 at Oakmont.
Bones is really really good as an on course guy. Right blend of knowledge, humor, and insight.
Oh my god what a par by Rickie.
This is going to take forever. Over an hour to play 3 holes.
Rickie in more trouble on 5, but JT and Kuch are looking at bogey and may not be able to take advantage.
Rickie is gonna be lucky to make double.
Fowler left the door open on the front 9 but JT and Kuch couldn’t do anything either. Hard to see him blowing this now.
Well he just chipped it into the water. So maybe not over yet.
The ball just rolled back into the water after he had put it back in play. I haven’t seen that before.
He got a penalty for it. Wow. He’s got like 20 feet for a quad.
He made the putt. Final verdict is that was a triple. Broadcast is confused. 3rd shot in the water, relief was 4th shot, 5th shot was the ball rolling into the water, 6th on the green and then made putt.
This is crazy. Apparently he got a stroke back too?
I didn't see how he ended up in the water originally... he chipped in?
He chipped in, dropped, then it rolled in so had to take a 2nd drop. Cost him one stroke in the end.
I’ve never seen that.
Just saw the replay. No spin on that pitch. Also never seen something like that.
I’ve seen balls at rest roll into a hazard. Which is weird, but ultimately understandable. But I’ve never seen a ball that was placed after taking relief from a hazard, rolling back into the same hazard.
That’s simply awful luck.
And a dumb rule
Now that he is 30 Is this the year that Rickie’s no wins at majors becomes a big story at every major or does that still only get casually mentioned? Seems like a good, likable guy and he is a very very good player but his record at majors and Ryder cups speaks for itself. The guy hasn’t been a closer in the biggest stage. Maybe he gets one and then goes on a run like Phil did but for the amount of attention the guy gets you’d expect there to be more big wins on his board.
That was horrible luck. But you can’t put it in the water with a five stroke lead.
It is already a big story. He’s also 1-6 with 54 hole leads. That talk won’t go away.
Too bad Johnny isn’t doing this round.
Yep, ironic that yesterday was Johnny's final round, and he left with Fowler having a huge 54 hole lead. I'll bet one of the last things Miller said when he left yesterday to those around him was something like "I'll bet Fowler gives it away tomorrow."
The PGA Tour always has a few players who are very good at making lots of money but don't win as much as you would think they would given how often their name is on the leaderboard. Rickie looks a bit like one of those guys. $34M in earnings, 4 wins, 0 majors.
He hasn't loaded up on John Deer Classic wins, fwiw. A pair of his wins were at plus events. Quail Hollow wasn't slouchy either but I'm not sure the deep field shows up for it.
