I'm skeptical. People said similar about Gillislee last year (he only had 15 catches but also only 150 carries prior to NE, which is a similar ratio to Hill's catches / carries). Which isn't to say Hill (or Gillislee, for that matter) couldn't do it, but that early down back role just doesn't get thrown to much in NE's offense. He's usually pretty far down in the progression. Even on that nice play on the two-minute drive, Hill appeared to be a late option in the progression. The Patriots are usually going to have three or four players they'd rather throw to, even if Hill isn't a total zero in the passing game.

Webb got $70K guaranteed, which is a lot for a UDFA. That's about half of Hill's guaranteed money, and much more than Gillislee (who doesn't have any).

It is interesting, but with Edelman, Dorsett, and Hogan all sitting out the 2nd half they need somebody to run 3 and 4 WR sets.

I was at my HS's football practice this evening and I asked the coach why he keeps emphasizing lowering the head in light of the recent NFL rule... His response, "Because unlike the NFL, I care about my players' safety."

    So, there.

I think they haven't thrown to their early down backs because they haven't had capable pass catchers in that role, the one exception being Dion Lewis. Hill isn't at Lewis' level but he's closer to him than he is to Blount or Gillislee.

Dion Lewis had 32 catches for 214 yards last season. That's pretty similar to what Hill did during his rookie year (27 for 215) and not too far off from what Hill did two seasons ago (21 for 174). Gillislee has caught 16 passes for 94 yards in his entire career. Blount has caught 10+ passes in a season just twice in his career. Those guys were basically zeros in the passing game. Hill is more than that.

Maybe I'm projecting and arguing against a person of straw, but I could see people looking at Hill's size and unfairly lumping him in with other big Pats backs of recent vintage. I think that would be underselling his pass catching ability. And I like the idea of having an early down back who could win some mismatches against LBs in coverage. If nothing else, it gives the defense something to think about that they don't have to consider when Gillislee is on the field.

I mean, in a perfect world Michel is healthy and getting the bulk of early down carries anyways. I just think Hill brings more to the table than Gillislee does. Pass catching may not be a huge difference maker in that calculus but the fact that Hill can do it at all is a pretty big step up from Gillislee's non-existent pass catching skills.

Zolak is absolutely right, 27 is going to get roasted for not blocking that guy in the film room.

#27 Lewis needs to block and not celebrate on that play.

Not a fan of Etling's footwork; looks awkward.

I understand what you're saying, but I think a lot of it is the offense. Look at BenJarvus Green-Ellis; he had 26 catches in four years in NE, including two as the primary RB. Then he signed with the Bengals and had 22 catches in one season. Blount had 15 catches one year in TB and never more than 8 with the Pats. Gillislee had a career high in carries last year and had one target. Even Danny Woodhead, who is probably the closest thing they've had to Lewis, topped out at 55 targets / 40 catches in NE; he had 88 targets / 76 catches his first year in SD (and another year with 100+ targets and 80 catches).

I don't disagree with your assessment of Hill but it also kind of doesn't matter. He's probably not as good a pass-catcher as three other RB on the roster (White, Burkhead, probably Michel), he's not as good a pass-catcher as Gronk, or Edelman, or Hogan, or hopefully the other WR who end up playing a lot. They're not going to run a lot of pass plays for him, and he's unlikely to be the primary read or the best matchup pre-snap. So if he's catching a lot of balls, it probably means they have injuries and / or the offense is a little dysfunctional.

    this. Spud Webb is awesome

Do we not have game balls for preseason?

In any case, game balls to Webb and Grissom. HM: Patterson, Hill, the backup FB, and the OL.And the halftime adjustments, especially on O.
    Bye Bye Mikey G.

    Good points

Hill, as most LSU backs, was well-coached at blocking and receiving. as well as running. We've had a couple before him come through Foxborough.

Cmon, Gruden. You can’t deal with that kind of distraction in Year 1. Send him up to Foxboro.

    What would a price be? 1st and 2nd round picks? 2 1sts?

I hope Gillislee starts practicing with the STs and they finally cut Bolden.

I know its unfair to bitch about Bolden and give his spot to Gillislee after a game Gillislee looked like warm crap.....but to be fair Bolden often looks like warm crap.

Hill and Webb are suddenly in on the RB competition. Maybe keep both and ditch Gillislee and Bolden and keep (and Develop) Crossen and Dawson as special teams guys.

Sam looked halfway decent at LB, though the bar was incredibly low last night.

Well the Patriots got Moss from the Raiders for a 4th round pick, so I'd start there and go up to a 3rd.

Wasn't there talk of Etling having to redo his footwork/throwing routine after the season? First game speed action could account for some issues there.
