But a nice pickup by Philly. They're in beast mode. But as always, we've seen great teams rise up for a year or two before the inevitable decline hits.
I can’t link the tweet from my phone but Chris Trapasso (a draft writer, I guess) tweeted that the Bennett move puts Philly roughly $15 million over the cap right now. So there will need to be cuts, etc

So did Seattle trade Bennett so they can re-sign Sheldon Richardson? Man, the Seahawks defense is going to be completely overhauled. Got to think Avril is retiring, Sherman is cut and possibly Chancellor retires too?

Get Sherman here on a make good year like Revis and see if you can get Talib too. Have to figure this could be the best secondary in New England in quite some time if all pans out.

But the bigger need is at LB and DL. Have to make a splash there and int he draft.

Okay, but 5th + Marcus Johnson vs 3rd + 5th means they value Marcus Johnson as equal to a 3rd. And Sea threw a n a 7th to Philly, too.

Either there’s more to the story or it’s BS. Or Sea is really, really high in Marcus Johnson. Or just really really high.
I think you are reading it wrong.
Pats would have been sending a 3rd and getting Bennet and a 5th back is how I read it.

Here is a very interesting take from Joe Banner:

Said earlier this week have a hunch that Giants have their mouth watering for Barkley. Some writer then reported that. And we have the reports out of Cleveland that THEY await Barkley. Hmmm.

The plan may be very flawed — but it’s beginning to fit together.

Edit. This is the trade Banner is alluding to:

No, if they were going to keep him, they would have tagged him. Richardson's going to get ridiculous money, like $70M over 5 years, $20-something million guaranteed.

Avril may have to retire. He's only got one year left in his deal, so he's probably cut if he doesn't. Sherman won't be cut, only traded. He still has value. Chancellor won't retire after he signed that new deal. And he's untradeable and uncuttable, so he plays or is on IR.

They clearly want to get younger on defense. And maybe they're going to put some more money into the offense with these cuts. Wilson is the man to get behind. He's in his prime.

“I’m told there had been trade conversations going on between
the Broncos & the 49ers for Aqib Talib. It doesn’t look like it’s going to
get done. Told Talib prefers to be released by Denver so he can chose his next team, his top choice is the New England Patriots per sources”

Is Martellus Bennett for sure retired? Wonder if they discussed the possibility of both playing for the Pats next year before the trade with Philly was phinalized.

Also, I wish Talib would've been more discrete about wanting to come here if cut. That can't be making it more likely Elway lets it happen.

At what point will the NFL grow a spine and fine/Punish teams who ask questions like this?

As mentioned earlier in the evening, LSU running back Derrius Guice said on SiriusXM NFL Radio that a team asked Guice if he likes men. But that wasn’t all of it.

Here’s the full quote from Guice: “Some people really try to get in your head, man, and really just test your reaction and see what your reaction is going to be. I’d go in one room and a team would ask me, ‘Do I like men?’ just to see my reaction. They’d try to bring up one of my family members or somebody and tell me, ‘Hey, man, I heard your mom sells herself. How do you feel about that?’ Just random stuff like that, man, to see how you respond. Even though I know those things aren’t true and they know those things aren’t true, they’ll still hit you with it to see how you’ll react to it.”

The desire to stir a reaction — presumably to get past the pre-programmed responses that players are coached to provide — doesn’t justify asking inappropriate questions. For Guice, he faced not only an inappropriate question about sexuality but also a reprise of the question that once was notoriously posed to receiver Dez Bryant.

I don't care if it is a late rounder, but what would his cap hit be on the Pats?

Edit: looks like $11M? no chance they absorb that
I originally though this too, but I wonder if they would make other moves between now and when his money is guaranteed to fit him under the cap or if he'd restructure his contract and make some of the money guaranteed now to free up more cap space.

I guess they could do something like with Revis where Talib gets $XM next year but they cut him and just absorb a hit. $11M is too high though.

Wouldn't that push his 2019 hit to like $13.5M if he is on the team and $5.5M if cut?
Yes. I admit I don't know if this would effect his 2019 contract in terms of anything being guaranteed. Right now, his $8 million is non-guaranteed and can be cut with zero dead money. I wouldn't want to touch his current contract if it meant anything becoming guaranteed.

I wasn't aware 2019 isn't guaranteed. 1 year of Talib at $11M is palatable IMO but might be really difficult given the OT and RB situations.

"Richard Sherman was in Las Vegas Thursday attending NFL Players Association meetings and also — according to a few pictures on social media, anyway — trying his luck at a craps table. What he also figures to soon be is an ex-Seahawk with the team remaining expected to release him in the next 24 to 48 hours. The Seahawks have explored trade options for Sherman but nothing appears to have materialized — at least as of Thursday morning — and Seattle is likely to instead release Sherman ahead of the beginning of the new league year on Wednesday.

Because Sherman is a vested veteran his contract would officially be terminated and he would immediately become a free agent.
The Seahawks would be open to re-signing Sherman at a lower salary than the $11 million he is due in 2018. But how eager Sherman would be to return to Seattle at a lower salary is hard to tell. Conventional wisdom is Sherman would likely want to move on."

Sounds like Sherman is going to be cut.

Also sounds like Honey Badger was asked to take a pay cut. Will be curious to see how that plays out.

Yeah, no way on giving up draft capital for Talib and his contract. Too much of a risk.

Another Seahawks CB to be released: Jeremy Lane, saving almost $5M on the cap. After his DUI, there was little chance he was hanging around, especially at his salary.

Rams offseason has been amazing. Franchised their breakout safety, traded a massively overpaid LB for picks, added Talib and Shields to a team with the best defensive player in football. And cleared cap space to the point where they might be able to bring back Watkins for another try.

The NFC West is going to be amazing.

Except they have to save money to re-sign/extend said best defensive player since he's going to be a UFA after 2018.

Rams aside, what makes you say that? Seattle still has massive issues on the offensive line and is losing playmakers on D. The Niners will be better with a full season of JG, but not likely to be ‘amazing’. And Arizona is aging and at this point doesn’t have a QB.

They're currently projected to have 85M+ in cap space next year to make their re-signings. They'll be fine. Plenty of ways to move money around.

Yeah, I’d have to second this question. I was wondering if my sarcasm meter was broken.
