It's an odd story--some are saying it was cowboy themed. But some of those costumes...

Oakland and NY going into rebuild mode after making a bunch of decisions all summer exactly opposite of what a rebuilding team should is great

Looking back, the decisions the Raiders made seem perfect if you want to lose now and win in 2020/1. Jordy Nelson and Tahir Whitehead won’t be on the 2020 cap. They will help them lose games in 2018/9.

Not that I necessarily believe Gruden really intended high level NBA style tanking. But if he did, it is hard to see what they would be doing differently.

You can roll over cap space, so if you were tanking you wouldn't want the short term deals either. They could have $20+ MM pretty easily now without the vets that they signed. The Browns, Jaguars, Titans, and 49ers all were $30 MM+ under the cap in 2017; that let them all spend over the cap this year (still with significant room in the case of CLE / TEN / SF).

(As noted above, I'm not necessarily sold on tanking as a strategy in the NFL anyway)

I'm guessing this was a "feel it out" year and they aren't shocked at the direction things have gone but they were open to the idea they might contend on some level. They could try to tank next year, but I would think they'd want to be competitive for the first season in Vegas (2020) and it's tough to see them tanking in 2019 and competing in 2020. It's also hard to see them being good in 2019, tanking or not.

As a Drew Brees/Alvin Kamara/Michael Thomas fantasy owner, I can say without any hyperbole whatsoever, that Taysom Hill is the worst thing to ever happen to professional football.
NB ... no douchebaggery from HOFer Drew Brees about the deployment of this guy. That is not going to happen in most other places.

Can you imagine being the head coach and trying to get Peyton on board with sacrificing some short yardage passing TDs to a guy like Taysom Hill?

4 Jaguars were arrested in London after trying to leave the club without paying their bill. They got into a fight with bouncers. They were released after 9 hours in custody and the club dropped the complaint after they paid up. It was a 50k pound bill. Reportedly the players were Barry Church, DJ Hayden, Ronnie Harrison, and Jarrod Wilson.

They tried the Tracy Morgan? Wow.

How do you run up a 50K bill a couple nights before a game? That sounds like a 2 or 3 day hangover waiting to happen.

Hell, at 40, that may be a week for me.

So 9 guys total. Looks like they thought they were being comped when the club sent high end booze to the table, club disagreed

A friend of mine (really a friend of mine, not me) who has had some experience with this came out with that explanation the second the story broke. He lives in Europe and is a fairly high roller, says it's not uncommon for some clubs over there to pull crap like this (send over bottles that people believe would be comp'd and then send in the thugs when the party tries to leave). Seems like a crappy long-term business plan if you want repeat business, but I guess it does happen. Who knows in this case.

Yeah I've heard of such things too here in NYC. In this case they were dealing with foreigners who could be literally arrested and held and basically shaken down, like Michael Phelps was in Rio. No repeat business was expected, but getting $50k that a regular customer might have otherwise disputed would be pretty nice, especially with 10,000%-markup items like these bottles. Doubtless they called the police before they'd even presented the bill, or maybe within seconds of it, knowing they'd need real backup.

If it were just bouncers vs a cadre of NFL players, though, I'd have been amused to see it - the usual "goon squad" approach of club bouncers, going up to shake someone down and maybe rough them up, only to be confronted with 9 of the largest, strongest men on the planet. The initial article says it was a "brawl" and that the players "squared up to bouncers" outside.

I had it done to me in Chicago once. Waitress had the stones to ask for a tip too.

It makes sense for Dez to play with a QB where he doesn’t have to get separation to catch passes; Brees is that accurate. He just has to catch the ball...which might be an issue.

Bruce Irvin cleared waivers and is now a free agent.

Former Raiders’ DE Bruce Irvin, and the $3.8 million he had left on his Oakland contract, went unclaimed on waivers today, per source. Now a free agent.

Irvin will likely be back in Seattle this week. No insider information, just a gut reaction. They need the pass rush help.

Sounds like Dez and Saints are getting close. That game in Dallas will be nuts.
