I've gotta imagine the behind the scenes word on Luck's shoulder is a lot better than the public currently knows, because otherwise I don't really understand this for McDaniels at all. Likely his last shot and he goes to a team with a bad roster and bad owner? I suppose the relative weakness of the AFC South makes the path to success feasible, but even that's no lock with a very good Jags team, Watson in Houston, and the shitty-but-still-playoff-team Titans. With a healthy Luck I'd call this something like bottom third of the league in head coaching job desirability - with the legitimate chance that he's never the same, it's gotta be one of the absolute worst. I would've waited another year if I were Josh, it's not like he was at risk of becoming any less A-list.

As much as we crap on Irsay, I don't think he really mettles in football decisions that much. As Bert Breer said this morning, Bill Polian wouldn't have lasted 14 years there if that were the case. There are a lot of shitty things about the Indy job but I don't think he's a bad owner in terms of getting in the way of football operations.

If Andrew Luck is healthy, you can probably count on your fingers* the number of coaching jobs that are better than Indy’s — and few (if any) of the better ones figure to come open in the next year, assuming BB doesn’t ride off into the sunset. This was the right time and place for McD to place his big bet.

*- I’m counting Philly, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, LA Rams, New Orleans, Kansas City, Jacksonville, and of course New England; maybe I missed a couple. None are open now, and only the Steelers and Packers gigs have any realistic prospect of opening up after next season.

This being McDaniels' last shot keeps coming up, but I don't think that's necessarily the case. When Belichick retires, McDaniels would be a front runner for HC of the NE Patriots.

I agree that he must be very confident in Luck's health - or love Brissett. Ha.

I'm very surprised the Titans didn't wait it out a bit and give him an interview. That would have been a great fit IMO with Mariota.

History suggests that two-time head coaching failures almost never get a third chance. I don’t think McD will buck that trend. Maybe McD would be the heir apparent to BB if he remained on staff, but if he goes to Indy and fails there, the Pats will have internal options more attractive than giving McD a third shot when BB is done.

Historically speaking, sure. This is a unique situation with a guy that's 41 years old, and is currently going to his 8th Super Bowl with the current ownership group.

If McD stayed in Foxborough, he might well be the heir apparent. But if he goes elsewhere and fails (again), I can’t imagine Kraft will give the job to McD when BB finally moves on — there will be other internal options who haven’t failed twice as head coaches.

I can’t imagine Kraft caring about his failures. There certainly will be other options in house, but I give Kraft credit enough to look past that if he feels McDaniels is the right guy to continue the run.

I think we could see McD or Patricia Back.

Patricia fails in Detroit, Comes back and pays his dues on a BB staff for a final year or 2 before BB rides off into retirement.

Similar Story with McD.

I think Patricia is more likely because after say 2 or 3 Bad years in Detroit and successful years in NE, Flores and Patricia Could essentially swap spots. (Maybe Flores actually goes to Detroit or more likely he goes somewhere else as the newest shiniest HC). If BB stays another year or 2 post Patricia rehire then Patricia could be johnny on the spot as heir apparent.

I know we specifically are talking about 2 time failures so Maybe McD is really shit outta luck.

Lots of former Pats assistants following either McDaniels, Patricia or Vrabel.

Dean Pees in the new Titans DC
Dave DeGuglielmo is the Colts new OL coach
Jeff Davidson is Lions new OL coach
George Godsey is the Lions QB coach

Peter King said on a MMQB video that he's heard that Scar is going to retire after tomorrow.
Hell of a return for him since coming back in 2016... Has to feel good, and likely makes it easier to walk away again. He'll clearly be missed.

This is a guy someone should write a book about.

We already had a kind of “natural experiment” that demonstrated what he’s capable of. I hope he shares HOW.

This is interesting
It’s been regarded as a foregone conclusion that, not long after Super Bowl LII ends, Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia will become the next coach of the Lions and Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will become the next coach of the Colts. However, there’s one little interesting nugget that was shared during the NBC Super Bowl pregame.

Patricia has essentially made it known to the Patriots that he’s leaving. McDaniels hasn’t, yet.

This doesn’t mean McDaniels will back out of his apparent arrangement to become the successor to Chuck Pagano, but there’s a strange vibe that has been floating around as it relates to the question of whether McDaniels absolutely, positively is leaving.

None of this means that the not-done-deal is destined to fall apart, but there’s just enough gurgling around to justify keeping eyes and ears open on this one. If McDaniels snubs the Colts, he’ll have a hard time getting another head-coaching job unless and until the Patriots aren’t in the playoffs or they make an early exit. And the thinking is he’d do it only if the Patriots were willing to give him a clear commitment that he’ll be the successor to Bill Belichick.

Lions officially name Matt Patricia head coach. Thanks for the memories (we'll leave last night alone).

STATEMENT FROM EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER BOB QUINN

“When we launched the search for our next head coach, I wanted to find a leader that could take us to the next level and I am confident we have found that in Matt Patricia. He has been preparing for this opportunity his entire career, and he’s ready for the responsibility and its challenges.

“Matt is driven to succeed, has extreme passion for the game and excels in preparation. He embodies the same hard-working, blue-collar attributes that represent our organization and the great City of Detroit.”

If B.B. leaves and Brady leaves in few seasons, Indy with Luck May Be more desirable.

As a football fan, I think Luck and McDaniels is basically the most likely case scenario for one of these younger QBs to take a step forward into the Brady-Rodgers eschelon.

Bradley Chubb is the guy presently being mocked to the Colts most frequently, but if they decide to give the offense someone like Saquon Barkley...yikes.

Per sources, the Colts also have contracts in place with three of Josh McDaniels' new assistants: Defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, OL coach Dave DeGuglielmo and DL coach Mike Phair.

Welp, looks like Luck will be dead soon

Ha, Miami hired DeGoogs after they fired their previous offensive line coach. The good news is he’s a better coach than a guy that does lines in his office and sends videos of it to a stripper.

God damn Calvin Coolidge forever, for inventing a word when the perfectly good "normality" already existed.

It's like our jokes about Trump and "bigly". Yeah, you could see that in print and understand what the speaker meant, but anyone with a command of English knows what the right construction is...

*sigh*
