Carmelo traded to Bulls.

EDIT: Will be released and become FA.

Weird that Houston couldn’t just do this. I guess it costs the Bulls less to release him? Why?

Houston's a tax-paying team, right? They can send him to the Bulls and include enough cash to cover what he's owed but avoid paying any luxury tax penalties on his contract.

Yes, the Rockets save $2.6M in luxury tax, and the Bulls have a big trade exception from the Mirotic deal that expires on Feb. 1, so I guess they used part of it on Melo. But what's in this trade for the Bulls unless the cash consideration exceeds what Melo is owed?

I'm guessing that there is a 2nd round pick with moderate protections included somewhere in the deal. That's usually the going rate for these kinds of deals.

Lakers: We maintain interest in Melo. I mean we wouldn't trade anything for him. And we wouldn't sign him for the minimum if he gets cut. But we definitely maintain interest.

Yes, the good old top 55 protected second round pick. But nothing is being reported about what Chicago or Houston gave other than Melo and cash.

The Bulls didnt give up anything they were able to fit Carmelo into a trade exemption they had. It was purely a financial move for the cash considerations.

Haha. Austin Rivers just straight up mugged Redick and appeared to go back to try to apologize and JJ just got right up and walked away. Does anyone in the NBA really like Austin Rivers aside from Doc?

Harlan and Miller would have you believe that TJ McConnell and his coach's son, Pittsburgh toughness will slow James Harden. I like McConnell but if he covered Harden for an entire game, Harden would destroy him and have him fouled out by the third.

Now Corey Brewer is fucking with James Harden. The 76ers
LOL, Corey Brewer trying to go all Marcus Smart on Harden.

Redick is en fuego.
The thing is, Brewer has always lacked the sort of physicality that tends to slow Harden. He isn't the best guy to be trying to intimidate the opposing player's lead dog.

He just did it. He got Harden to react, and Harden got his third foul. Both Harden and Embiid have technicals too. This one could get out of hand.

The officiating in this game is horrible. I think we need an NBA officiating thread. They are completely losing control of this game - shades of the Cs @ Atlanta

Harden was lucky he didn't get his 4th right there on Embiid. They gave it to Tucker, but it could have easily gone to Harden.

I don't think I've ever seen as many players looking up at the jumbotron to check out replays as I am seeing in this game. Every play, there's like 6 guys looking up.

This one is getting away from Houston in a hurry. 25 point lead now. Harden with 4 fouls, nobody else can throw it in the ocean for the Rockets. Philly just looks huge out there on the floor against them, and their length seems to be getting into Harden's shooting motion more than most other teams do. Rebounds are 35-20, and Philly has 11 blocks (1 for Houston).

They really miss Capela.

Given the situation the Rockets are in, why is Harden even playing now? Just give him the rest of the night off.

Four blocks for 76ers’ new backup center, Jonah Bolden. Slight improvement over Amir Johnson. With upside.

Posted this in the wrong thread but D'Angelo Russell is averaging 24.8 over his last 11 and that includes a 10 and 5 point performance. Shooting .505/.432/.947 over that time.

Would anyone be surprised if he ended up better than Ingram and Ball?

I think he's already better than Ball, and I don't think Ball is ever going to be as good as him. Needless to say, I was never a Lonzo lover. I think there's a bit more of an argument to be made for Ingram, and I could see people going either way on him, but if it were my choice, I'd rather have Russell over either of them. That said, the Lakers did get back Kuzma in that deal, so it wasn't a horrific trade for them, but if they could have gotten Kuzma for Ingram, well, I think they'd be in a much better place right now.

Good chance that D'Angelo and Julius Randle are going to be the two best players that the Lakers drafted during their rebuild and they jettisoned both of them.

Klay Thompson appears to be out of his funk it seems. Before the game he was shooting .527/.444 for January. He is 8-8 tonight from deep, 15-17 overall and has 38 points with over seven minutes left in the third.

17/20 shooting with 10 made threes is a really good stat line.

Yep, he's 10/11 from 3 and has 44 points. Curry only shot 2/10 from 3 and has 11 points. Durant has 20 on 13 shots. Green barely played. Cousins played 21 minutes and went 2/9 from the field for 8 points/9rebounds/5 assists.

So, basically, of their starting 5, only Klay played great, and the rest were average at best, to terrible. Yet, they are up 27 at the Lakers, and have 117 points with 7:00 left to play.

The Warriors are playing at another level, and as Boogie gets his legs under him, the gap between them and everyone else is only going to grow. Jonas Jerebko was playing real minutes and was a big contributor not long ago, and now the guy is like the 10th man.

Barring injuries to at least a couple starters, I don't see how anyone takes them down this year.

The Warriors starting unit has 5 All-Stars, hasn't been done since the '75 Celtics. Boogie looks to fit in seamlessly. They are fast, can shoot and are big, not sure what you can do to stop them (hope for injuries?)

Hopefully, Danny will play towards the future with the roster at the trade deadline. Not interested in GFIN moves that sacrifice the long term.

If Boogie does fit in, and the Death Star rolls on to another championship, it will make the Celtics struggle this season a lot more palatable.

Noticed Jahkil Okafor vs Warriors on Wed night looking lean and as agile as I’ve seen him. I was shocked at his body transformation but he didn’t get much in the way of results. Good to know the eyes weren’t deceived though as Okafor came out of nowhere last night to drop a 20/10 (8-11 FG) on the Grizzlies front line last night.

Don’t count this kid out just yet.

We'll learn a lot on Saturday, I suppose.
One game is one game, but — assuming no injuries in their interim one game, and knocking wood — it'll be great to see the two teams go at it fully rested and with full, healthy squads.

Beyond the various fascinating bball matchups (Curry v. Kyrie, KD/Klay v. Tatum/Hayward, Boogie v. Horford/Baynes, etc.) I'll be disappointed if Smart and Dray$ don't get in each other's grills at least once.

To add to the (potential) pre-game hype: if the Warriors can take care of business v. the Wizards on Thursday, Kerr will be going after career win #300.

Maybe this should go in the picks thread but the Kings are so fun right now with their young talent developing (and there is nothing we Cs fans can do about it anyway) that they deserve a broader look.

In any event, one of the lesser discussed developments with Sacramento aside from Fox, Hield, Jackson and Bagley is the development of Bogdan Bogdanovic. He is less efficient than his impressive rookie season but he is also being asked to carry more of the load and is doing pretty well with it. If this kid played in a bigger market, he and the rest of the young Kings core would have much more hype.

There is a scenario where the Kings add another impact scorer and become a middle to high seed team in the West next year, especially if their wealth of talent continues to improve.

Raptors starting to pull away from Kings, who are on a back to back and oddly doing better than they did last night, when they got blown out in Brooklyn. Highlight of the game was some idiot on Sacramento fouling a Raptor on an end-of-the-third-quarter desperation shot from beyond the half court line. Sacramento announcers were practically apoplectic. Three foul shots for Toronto.
