ESPN Playoff Machine said it was Strength of Victory.
Common opponents (BUF schedule, BAL schedule) were: CIN (BAL x2), OAK, MIA (BUF x2), and that's it. You need minimum 5 to have common opponents matter.
For strength of victory, it's the average winning percentage of the teams you beat. I'm not going to do the math out, but Buffalo beat ATL and KC. I don't think Baltimore beat anyone with a winning record.

I’ve seen wildcard weekend but no divisional. Seems like last year both were announced at or around the same time.
Would have been pretty hard to predict a playoff game between Buffalo and Jacksonville before the season started, eh?
First of all, it’s fun to watch Buffalo celebrate tonight. I felt the same way back in ‘95 and ‘03 when the Red Sox clinched.
Second, it seems as if this basically couldn’t have worked out better for the Pats. The Ravens and Chargers were highly rated by advanced stats (7th and 11th In DVOA) and looked competent. I’m thrilled to have them out of the playoffs.

Never mind advanced stats -- Baltimore and SD had the 4th and 5th best point differential in the AFC. Baltimore's +92 has to be close to a record for a non-playoff team (in the current playoff format).
I can't vouch for the research, but this reddit thread suggests the 1991 49ers had a +154 point differential and missed the playoffs (10-6 record).
Fifth on the list is the 2008 Pats, at +101

According to the linked article they haven’t released whos playing on Saturday and Sunday in the divisional round but they did have the times. And if it’s right the Pats are either playing 4:35 on Saturday or 4:40 on Sunday. And there is an 8:20 NFC game Sunday night.

Odd to have a Sunday night playoff game no? I wonder if this is a makeup for NBC and the lack of a night game tonight?

Not at all. Remember how Pittsburgh/KC got bumped back due to weather last year? Got killer ratings comparatively, NFL basically decided in the conference championship week they were going to make it a permanent deal.
It's gotta have a lot to do with the holiday the day after. Plus what Delonte said.
Well that link I had was not correct at all. There is no Sunday night game and the Pats are playing 8:15 on Saturday.

Chargers must be pissed off Buffalo made it over them with the same record after they blew them out in the Peterman game.
And only because it was a 3-way tie, too. If it was just BUF and LAC, head-to-head would have ruled. Baltimore had to fuck up and lose to Andy Dalton, on 4th and a million no less, to make it so that the tiebreaker was conference record. And even then, that merely eliminated the Chargers - Buffalo then had to beat out Baltimore on Strength-of-Victory (total Win% of opponents you beat).
As far as "squeaking into the playoffs", I think it's second only to the 7-9 Seattle team.
Also, nobody talks much about him anymore, but the Bills making the playoffs must make Rex oh so mad.
