DJ drives it in the rough, forced to just hack it out and lay up. Spieth from the middle of the fairway and the door wide open hits a near shank. DJ has 20 feet or so to save par. Good entertainment here.

Spieth has to hit this now. DJ has played his last two shots like the number one player that he is. This is a pretty legit playoff pairing.

If DJ could putt like Jordan, I swear his average score would be around 65. I feel like he only missed one fairway today, and when you're hitting the tee ball 340, and have nothing but wedges in, it just becomes a question of how many putts he makes.

Rob blows up today on the back nine and shoots 76. Worst part is so did everyone else around him, and it looks like he's going to finish, you guessed it, 26th. Not sure of the money differential yet, but I have a feeling we're going to find out if he shot something like even par today, he may have snuck into 25th if the current results hold up.

Anywhere in the top 20 looks like he would have got the 25th spot based on how much a t-18th is currently worth. Would have needed a -5 today.

That isn't updated for this week. He came in at 27. Four week playoff here we come. I forget how this works? Does the money from the year carry over into this or it starts everyone on a level playing field?

Web tour players 26-50
PGA tour players 126-200

100 guys - fighting for 25 cards?

Yep, he ended up 27th, about $7100 back. Basically, if he finished in the top 20 this week, he would have got in.

As for the playoffs, I believe it's Web players 1-75 and tour players 126-200, for a total of roughly 150 golfers (although that many don't usually play because some of the guys who already got cards skip some of them, etc.). The money from the 4 playoff tournaments is all that counts. The regular season is thrown out. The top 25 at the end of the fourth tournament (when you factor out the guys who already have cards) get a card. Unless it's like last year, and a hurricane wipes out the last event, with Rob sitting at 26th, $300 out, then it's only three events. Uggh.

I am planning to go the Dell on Friday, my first time attending the event. My wife's cousin works for the Tour and is sending me her complimentary passes for the weekend, but I really don't know what they will give me in terms of access. Assuming the passes don't give me anything special and I am comfortable walking the course, following groups for a few holes, maybe finding a place where I can sit or stand and watch two holes at a time, does anyone have advice for best ways to watch the action? Is VIP parking worthwhile? How long does it usually take to get from Great Woods to the course and through the gates?

I've gone the last few years - always a good take (I'll be there on Sunday). Unless I get a better option through work, I typically just get basic grounds passes. Following specific groups can be tough - if it's a desired group you generally have to alternate shots (watch the drive, then skip ahead to the green) because there are so many people following the group. If you are just trying to see these guys up close, pick out a early group as the crowd tends to grow as the day goes on (at least on the weekends).

I think the best solution is some combo of the approaches you mention. Last year, I followed a specific group to a par 3 (#11, I believe), stayed there and watched all of the other groups come through and then walked to #18 tee and watched the groups come through again. Seemed to work well in terms of maximizing the amount and variety of golf you get to see.

Would not pay for VIP parking. They actually have a pretty solid system in terms of getting you there it's about 10 minute bus ride from Great Woods and then about a half mile walk to the clubhouse. Buses run all day and very frequently.

The course is 10-15 minutes total from the Great Woods lot. They bus you less than a quarter of a mile up the street and then it's a few minutes walk from the drop off point to the course. I don't think the VIP parking is necessary. I didn't have problems with traffic leaving last year since people come and go throughout the day and there's no crazy rush leaving. The bus system ran smoothly.

Last year we ended up following groups in the morning, then as the crowds grew in the afternoon making it a bit more challenging to get good vantage points, we parked it in the grandstand behind the 9th green and watched guys play through there. There are some cool spots on the course. I'd recommend bring some binoculars, if you have some. If you find a spot you like in a fairway you can park it there and watch the action from the tee and green.

I'm going to disagree with the two posters above and say if you plan on spending most of the day there, VIP parking is a great investment.

You're going to be tired at the end of the day. The sun will take it out of you, standing for hours will as well, and if you have a beer or two you'll be exhausted. The last thing you'll feel like doing is walking back to the general busses and wait in line to go back (if its at the end of the day the lines get long).

VIP has more frequent shuttles that drop you off right at the club house.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I am looking forward to tomorrow, planning to arrive early, start on 10 with whichever group is on the tee, follow them out to 11, watch a few groups come through until the DJ/Spieth/JT group gets there, then try to follow them for a few holes and spend most of my morning on the back 9. From there I will see where the day takes me, but I definitely want to follow Rory's group for a while, too (front 9 at 1:04). I do wish there was a current course map on the tournament website - they really don't give much useful info for an obsessive planner like me. I found last year's map, so that is something to start with.

One other question, in case anyone has experience: my passes give me clubhouse access - does anyone know what that entails at TPC Boston?

Rob goes 73-71, +2. Outside the cut right now, needs 3 guys to fall behind him when all is said and done in the 2nd round to play the weekend. Dicey.

Made the cut on the number. Rob bogeyed 2 of the last 3 holes.
Making the cut is big though. This course seems to be playing much tougher than most web.com events, one good round over the weekend and he'd jump into the 25

Of course he picks up a bogey on 11 (his #2)

Lucas Glover's knee exploded or something during a backswing at the Northern Trust. He's down and getting attended to. I haven't seen anything like this before.
Just watched Glover make an ace at 16 at the Dell. Very cool. Did not buy beers for the grandstand though.

Strong finish for Rob. He birdies 2 of the last 3 holes to get to -2 for the tournament.

That puts him into 22 place, and 17th among non card winners. If he could repeat that tomorrow, he might sneak into the top 10 which would be HUGE

Really would be a good start to the four event playoff. Would love to see a top 5 in one of the next two tournaments to help secure this mans future.

A top 5 would almost lock it up for him, but today was a big day obviously. I've been waiting for one of these "tougher" courses for a while now. Over the course of his career, these seem to be better for him, because he's such a good putter. If he can just hit fairways, he'll have a chance to go low on any course, and a 67 like today goes a long way. Don't also underestimate the amount of sphincter tightening that is going on out there right now. Rob isn't the only one out there playing for his future, but he's one of the few guys that has been down this road many times before. He knows better than anyone if you just get to the weekend, anything can happen. I'm pretty sure he's made almost every cut in the playoffs over the past few years. With a lot of the guys in contention already having cards locked up, if you can just make consistent top 25's for 4 tournaments, it'll put you in a great spot, but damn, a repeat tomorrow of today would take a lot of pressure off.

Let's also not forget that the $1,000,000 purse in these events is much, much higher than the typical $600,000 or so they usually play for, so in addition to the Tour card, there is a lot of financial stability that comes with playing well this month.

And the talent pool is stronger in the playoffs. The players on the big tour who didn't secure their card drop into the web.com players (where Rob was last year.)

Early start to the day today I guess. Rob is -1 through 5 and heading to the par 5 6th

Ugh, plays it as a 3 shot hole, and then 3 putts for a bogey. back to even on the day

2 birdies after that, -2 on the day through 10 and he's to -4 for the tournament. T13. Keep it going. A couple of birdies coming in would be huge.

Edit: I believe Rob is playing with Hunter Mahan today

In Norton, Sergio slammed his putter and broke it on the 4th hole. Putting the rest of the round with his 3 wood and driver.

Weird, I guess the scoreboard on the web.com tour is not as accurate as on the PGA tour, this is the second time I have had this happen to me where i posted something, came back a half hour later, and the scores on the page had changed

6 holes to go and very well positioned, especially if he can get 1 or 2 more

I've been following on the app. Has him at -4 through 13 now, -6 for the tournament. T9.

It is having problem with the second par 5 going from a bogey to par to bogey. Either way Rob is playing great. Play these last five holes well and he should walk away with at minimum top 15.

Yesterday I swear the website initially posted him as having finished at even par, and then 20 minutes later when I looked they had found a couple more birdies and he was at -2. And yes it has bounced back and forth on that second par 5, where it initially posted a 3 putt bogey

In theory he is going to the 18th hole at -6, and tied for 10th, with 3 players ahead of him having secured their card already, so 7th in playoff card standings

It seems for the moment as he has finished his round with a 67, which is it turns out to be correct, will likely leave him in a tie for something in the 8-12 range

Whatever it is, it's a huge day for him. A top 10 should conceivably take some pressure off for the rest of the events, especially if a lot of guys who already have cards remain high on the list. The key isn't so much where he ends up relative to the guys who have cards (ie. 7th as of now), it's how low down the leaderboard the 25th guy ends up being. So, if 12 guys who have cards finish in the top 25, that means the 25th playoff card would be for the guy currently 37th in the playoff standings, which would give Rob a huge cushion.

Anyway, no real sense talking about it. He's still got to play well at least one more time, if not two, but this is exactly how he would have wanted to start out.

This was a big day, as DoTB said above he needs one more good tournament.

It looks like he will earn $24,000

Below is how much you would have needed each year at a minimum to get the final PGA tour card in this four event finals.

2016 - $27,500 (3 events) (rob had $27,100ish)
2015 - $32,200 (this was Rob)
2014 - $36,300

Don't know how many here watch the LPGA, but a very cool story today. Stacy Lewis, who's from Houston, had committed before the tournament started to donate all her winnings to hurricane relief. Today she won for the first time in three years, earning $195k all going to Harvey support. Then KPMG, her sponsor, matched her donation.
