Traded up 5 spots at this point in the draft, whoever they take they must really like. Captain Obvious comment I know.

There must have been a chasm between McDermott and the rest of their list. I wonder if one of the guys picked just before was ranked about even with him and when that safety net disappeared they just decided "hell with it" and gave up the 7th to remove the small chance he goes in those five picks.

After all the talk about trading JG and Butler to get a small arsenal of picks, of course they go in the opposite direction and wind up with just four players in the draft

We, we know nothing

Even with the question of where Peppers fits, I like what Cleveland has done in this draft. Garrett, Njoku, Kizer, Ogunjobi, Wilson, Johnson, Brantley and now Zane Gonzalez in the 7th.

Tell me I'm crazy. (I definitely feel crazy for typing this post!)

Come on, haven't the Pats learned their lesson about drafting injured TE's?
I wish they drafted Butt and put him on IR for a year but I like the way the draft played out. Focus on both lines.

We are going to be watching a 30 for 30 5 years from now about the Tragedy of the 2017 Browns draft class and how a few got career ending injuries some lost love for the game and some just busted.

The Cleveland Browns made Caleb Brantley, the former Florida defensive tackle accused of simple battery this month, the first pick of the NFL draft's sixth round Saturday.

Shortly afterward, Cleveland's head of football operations said the team may release him pending further investigation into the incident.

Welp, hadn't heard that news on Brantley.

The 30 for 30 begins?

I know it will get bad PR, and probably deserves that. I will say that using a late pick as an 'option' while facts come out is interesting. Tunsil fell last year and I think in the end facts didn't make it a big enough deal to justify the drop.

If facts make it look better for Brantley than iniital reports perhaps worthwhile. If they look as bad, though, sure hope they really do cut him

Like someone said upthread (quoting Reiss?), the draft was Cooks, Gillislee, Ealy, etc. When you have the room, why not.

To be fair, some of us thought JG would not be dealt for reasons already beaten to death, and that Butler would not be dealt because New Orleans wasn't foolish enough to tender a $50 MM contract AND a first round pick in a draft deep at corner.

The draft played out pretty much as a good number of us expected. Beef up the lines. 4 players.

They effectively had their draft during the FA period. After all that dealing, it's going to be a tall order to make this 53-man roster.

Well, I'm not the only one with the thought re: Cleveland. Don Banks, in his "Snap Judgments: NFL Draft Rounds 4-7" posted about an hour ago on Patriots.com:

"Could one-win Cleveland wind up being the big winner of this year's draft? Sorry, but I don’t do the silly draft grades exercise, because that’s the ultimate snap judgment, trying to assign a letter grade to picks that are just hours old. But if the Browns managed to finally find their long-term quarterback this weekend - and that’s the mother of all ifs in QB-starved Cleveland, isn’t it? - then how can you not like the haul Cleveland amassed?

"Myles Garrett, Jabrill Peppers, David Njoku and DeShone Kizer all came aboard in the draft’s opening 52 picks, and then the Browns kept adding talent in athletic defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi of Charlotte, Houston cornerback Howard Wilson, and others. Even better, Cleveland still owns 12 picks in next year’s draft, including two first-rounders, three second-rounders, and a pair of fourth-rounders."

I liked the Browns draft but think Kizer will never be a starter, even for the terrible Browns.

I'm pretty sure that any QB that suits up for the Browns is destined to be a starter. They average like four starting QBs a year...

9. A reminder of the longevity of Belichick’s coaching tenure in New England: His first draft pick as Patriots coach, 2000 second-round offensive tackle Adrian Klemm, was 2017 sixth-round draft choice Conor McDermott's offensive line coach the past four seasons at UCLA.

There's a good chance they had Justin Senior, OT, who went to the Seahawks one pick before the Pats picked, rated in the same tier as McDermott.

What is this based on? They're pretty different players - Senior is a heavy guy (331 pounds) whose athletic tests were terrible, while McDermott is on the light side (307 pounds at 6'8") but a terrific athlete (basketball player in high school). They're almost polar opposites.

Pats trading up a few picks as another OL comes off the board in the 6th round? I can't imagine they had much info on other teams in that area swooping in on McDermott.

OK, I didn't know if there was a source here or something.

It looks to me like they took two bits at the apple drafting guys with LT athleticism and underdeveloped frames in Garcia and McDermott (also a similar profile to Solder coming out) and Senior, who played RT in college and projects more as a RT in the NFL, wouldn't have fit in as well. Justis Mosqueda, a Packers fan who does a lot with Combine metrics, thinks McDermott fits what GB looks for and the Packers might have taken him had the Patriots not jumped ahead. GB did take an OL with their pick. Wanting to jump ahead of the Packers for McDermott specifically makes more sense to me than just wanting to get one of Senior / McDermott generally, and more fitting with my understanding of how NE's draft board works (they only had 50-75 guys on it per Caserio).

No but it may be more that they figured they were safe waiting until their pick until the other OT was picked then they figured they had better get their guy since anyone else looking for an OT could be on him now.
