I saw that too. But as I and several others have pointed out, the Celtics can't trade for Butler and still have cap space for Hayward or Griffin unless they relinquish Crowder and Bradley (or IT). It could never have been Butler for #3 by itself. Doesn't work.

This suggests that the Celtics feel good about their chances with Hayward.
Well they could do the deal now (at least that's my understanding) they'd just have to clear space in a later trade, prior to signing a FA.

Pretty crazy that Dwight Howard reached journeyman status by age 31. Never would have believed it 5 or 6 years ago.

Anyone who thinks the Nets got better in 2018 with this move is simply ignoring the talent being moved each way. The Celtics FO must have done a collective step over on that trade. The Nets '18 pick just got incrementally more valuable.

As for the Lakers, kudos to them but this also lowers the chances of next years pick being the first and it's likely that, absent their incentive to tank, the Lakers finish with a better record than this season. That increases the likelihood that the 76ers keep the LA pick in 2018 and the Cs get the better of the Philly or Sacto picks, provided neither are number one, in 2019.

As for the just announced Dwight Howard trade, it really seems like he has become the NBA equivalent of Bobby Bonds.

I was wearing my Charlotte Bobcats baseball cap today. Had no idea it would be so relevant.

I guess Belinelli is an expiring contract so that's attractive. This is what Howard buys these days?

Here
My favorite Bobcats moment was when House/Pierce stole their inbounds pass and Allen hit a 3 as the buzzer sounded and Tommy laughed and mocked the sad Bobcat players.

That was about moving Mozgov.
It was, yes. But the larger point was that the bloom is off D'Angelo Russell to the point that he wasn't bringing back a star either way.

Ball hasn't even played a game yet. How can we have any idea what he could fetch in a year?
We don't know, but there's a big risk that once you drive a guy off the lot he loses a bunch of value unless he's really good as a rookie. And even if he performs well, there still has to be a fit. There needs to be a team that's trying to get younger and looking to move the right sort of guy and the salaries have to work.

I'm told Lakers + Pacers currently at standstill on Paul George trade involving either Randle or Clarkson & 27th and 28th pick.

Nonetheless, Pacers will continue to talk to teams. I'm told it's "highly likely" Paul George gets traded before the draft.
That's the price? What would the Cs equivalent be? Marcus Smart, the Cs '18 pick and their 2nd rounders this year?

This is interesting.

Lakers, per sources, engaged Sacramento in talks that would have sent the 2nd pick to the Kings for Sac’s two 1st-rounders (5 and 10) (1/2)
David Aldridge‏Verified account @daldridgetnt 4m4 minutes ago
Lakers would have then packaged one of the Kings’ picks w/27 & 28 along w/player in offer to Indy for Paul George. But Kings said no (2/2).
That it very interesting. Ball wouldn't have gotten by Kings/Suns to lakers at 5.

Man the NBA off season is amazing

Squashes any thought of 5 and 10 for 3.

So is it a given they take Ball at 2? If they are willing to trade down to 5, they must not want Ball that much.
I think every team in the league would trade getting Ball for getting Paul George and 1 of Fox/Smith. Doesn't really say much about where they value Ball compared to rest of prospects.

Man, this is a buyer's market if there ever was one. Must be tough for Danny to wrestle between the market and building for down the road.

On the court, Jordan is just a perfect fit for the Celtics.

How fucking awesome is the NBA lately? They've basically broken the internet for the past week.

At this point, I wonder what other names become available if Ainge waits this out until Thursday. Although none of the names are that surprising and have all been mentioned before.

Ball be fallin. Gravity will not be denied.

And this likely signals the end of Paul Millsap in Atlanta.
Millsap would be an excellent value signing if Hayward and Griffin go elsewhere, George's rental doesn't work, and Chicago prices itself out of the Butler market. Millsap and Horford have shown that they play well together.

With a supermodel on each of his arms awaiting year two of a 4/94M contract payments to begin come October.
This is right out of a John Grisham preamble.

Seriously. Finals over one week and it's still dominating the headlines, blogosphere and the Twitterverse.
Yes. And it's all good, fun headlines. Contrast that with the NFL where every month there is a suicide and some research has shown that all players have CTE. That league cannot die fast enough for me.

Of course the NFL is coming off the greatest SB of all time and the NBA playoffs were a complete joke with zero drama after the 2nd round.

NBA might win the offseason but the product during the season is as boring as it gets unless you are a GSW fan.

I dunno about that. I thought it was pretty thrilling watching Tiny, DJ and the Celtics capture the #1 seed.

Without the #1 seed, they don't get by the Bullets for the privilege of getting slaughtered by the Cavs.

The interest in the mind numbing nba trade talk always surprises me. Golden State is winning the title next year. None of this really matters

True, but the NBA is a sport where winning an offseason championship can translate to multiple championships (not one, not two) down the road. I think it makes perfect sense to obsess over the NBA offseason. It's the other sports where you really are buying lottery tickets that the offseason talk is a bit silly (although I follow those too)

The NBA with its endless draft permutations and limited amount of difference makers is truly a chess game.

Everyone is making good points actually. Yes, the playoffs were ultimately devoid of any drama. And yes, the Warriors are still the favorites to win next title.

However, this offseason with the Cs trade and the Lakers move as well as the Cavs front office intrigue and all the associated ripple effects which will be felt for many seasons (a unique aspect of the NBA offseason) is simply amazing. The NBA is truly fantastic.

As a fan I actually don't really like the endless speculation because that is all that it is...speculation. While actual trades and moves are fine, the two biggest stories today are LA possibly getting LeBron in 2018 and the Knicks listening to trade offers to Porzingis, two things that are unlikely to happen. If you are the Knicks OF COURSE you are going to listen to offers for Porzingis, what if some team goes ape shit and offers the house and all the furniture for him? It's unlikely to happen, but that doesn't stop the NBA media circus from going bananas with fake trades and wondering what Porzingis would look like on their team and talking endlessly about something unlikely to happen. It's the 24 hour news cycle and social media at it's finest but to me it is all just noise that clogs up my feed.

With Gasol declining his option, the Spurs are clearly going to go after CP3 hard. I think they'll ultimately lose out to the additional $50M or so that Paul can earn in LA but they're now a move or two away from clearing the necessary cap space, likely by finding a taker for Green.

And if Paul does stay in LA, it will be interesting to see what the Spurs do with that cap space.

I, for one, am far more interested in this offseason than the snooze fest that was the playoffs, in large part because, depending on the moves that are made, we might be spared equally boring playoffs in future years. At least that's the hope...
