I've been a Cam Newton defender since I think he gets a lot of shit unnecessarily for being a "show boat" etc. and singled for it for whatever reason, but I'm out on Cam Newton as of today:

He really is a man-child isn't he?
This is a rare case where the video is so, so much worse than the quote. The quote is bad, but the way he says it just makes it so much worse.

Ugh. I've liked Cam for a while, but this is just eye-clawingly painful. What an incredibly dickbag thing to say (and how!).

And what's with the use of "females", rather than, you know "women"? Reminds me of that Reefer Madness bit... but it also seems like anytime someone describes a bunch of women as "females", every other part of the statement is probably sexist in some fashion. Maybe excepting police reports.

It's like it initially struck him as a sexual innuendo, except it's not, and then he tried to make it into one, except he didn't. Gross.

"It's really funny hearing a black guy talk about making Quarterbacking decisions in the NFL." chuckle chuckle.

What a fucking ahole.

Given his recent numbers, you can kinda picture him having the same reaction in team meetings when coaches discuss routes.

What in Cam Newton's history makes this a surprise?

He's an incredible athlete who is also an entitled shitbag. Sadly, that's kind of the norm for pro athletes.

Given the backlash he's facing, I bet Newton's next step will be to throw the press conference microphone out the window so the sexist comments can't be traced back to him.

Me too, but comes across really badly here, both the comment and for not apologizing once he was out of the moment.

This days after he made like Tommy Smith and John Carlos. You cannot square the deed with the words. Equality's equality.

He's a thin-skinned diva. He never owned his behavior after the SB loss and he's unlikely to own this.

No surprise, Sally Jenkins pulls no punches with Cam Newton.

It’s so funny when females try to talk about things that they shouldn’t. It’s just so . . . funny. Newton went all giggly when Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue asked him about receiver “routes,” because how would a female ever know what those are? But you know what’s even funnier? Watching a thought try to find a route into Newton’s head. I’m told nature abhors a vacuum, though as a woman I can’t confirm that. If you ask me, the empty expanse behind Cam Newton’s forehead proves that nature is just fine with areas entirely devoid of consciousness.

Tell you what: If Cam Newton will show me what a hitch and a slant are, I will show him how to take questions after a loss without pouting.

Ugh:
- "[my comments were hurtful to women], and that was not my intent". Of course it was your intent, you dolt. It wasn't a slip of the tongue or a poor word choice, you made your thoughts about women's "place" clear, in LaVar Ball-esque fashion. You want to give a real apology, say that you had ignorant opinions and you're working to change them.
- "I'm sorry if you took offense to what I said" - the classic non-apology apology. Say that you'd go back and change it if you could.
- Why the hell bring up that you've lost sponsors as a result of this process? Just undermines the sincerity of the apology.

God, what a shithead. The only "valuable lesson you've learned from this" is that it's in your financial interest to do exactly what your PR team tells you.

She really is a consistent counterexample to the idea that sportswriters are no-talent hacks who couldn't cut it in real journalism. A short list, but a meaningful one.

I don't understand why, in a crafted apology, he would say, "I'm sorry if you took offense." It's garbage. Just say, "What I said was offensive and I'm sorry for that." It's so much better and significantly more sincere.

I apologize in advance if any of you easily offended dolts got offended by my post.

The "funny" thing about this is that there is a legit discussion as to how far women have come in being able to have the access and opportunity to do the job that Ms. Rodrigue does, but I don't think that was the discussion that Newton was trying to start. If it was he totally shit all over himself in doing so and that particular moment wasn't the best time or place to start it. Imagine following SB 50 if any reporter had mentioned that that it was funny to see a black man play quarterback and making decisions on the sport's biggest stage.

Maybe the Cam/female reporters stuff should be split out into its own topic? I keep clicking on this thread expecting to see other news.

Really rough night for Houston. I think they had a real shot to be a contender by the end of the season as Watson progresses.

In a surprise to no one, Bucs boot Nick Folk and bring back a familiar face. Not Aguayo but Patrick Murray.

Giants put OBJ and Dwayne Harris on IR, then find out Brandon Marshall needs season-ending surgery. And Sterling Shepard is going to be out multiple weeks with an ankle problem. If you have decent hands, get your ass to the Meadowlands because you are needed STAT.

Giants gonna luck into a spot where they can draft an Eli replacement. That is a terrible, terrible football team.

So much for the worn to death narrative that the NFL just being immature, close minded and old fashioned about weed.

This is a candid acknowledgement of a devastating journey. I dearly hope he makes it.

To be clear, this article shows that with respect to the case of Josh Gordon specifically, it doesn't necessarily relate to the NFL being immature, close minded and old fashioned when it comes to weed. That doesn't mean that the NFL is not immature, close minded and old fashioned when it comes to weed.

Yup. In what is reportedly a QB rich year.

Injuries to be sure, but they are the poster child of pre-season prognostications gone wrong. If anyone had them bringing up the rear of the NFC East, I missed it.

Except in BBTL, Josh was Exhibit A of the NFL's foolishness. People were calling for the Pats to flip draft picks for him, with the Baylor experience written off as NCAA/ college stupidity.

When people are disciplined under the substance abuse policy, we often don't know the extent of it.

If the NFL were to transition to a regime where weed is acceptable -- for pain mitigation if nothing else --I'd support it.

Meanwhile we know one of several things about players who get caught up in this. They have flunked a stupidity test and they either cannot or are unwilling to stop using. In the former case, they have a substance abuse problem; in the latter, football is not that important. In Josh's case, it appears to be the former.

They listed like 6 substances he said he's used; I'm not sure why we'd focus on weed.

And they have the toughest remaining schedule. As I wrote in another thread, 0-16 is on the table, especially if Carr is back by the time they play the Raiders.

Eli is on record claiming he’d retire as a Giant no matter what, so it would be hard to trade him. But it looks like his term with the team he’s started his career with is going to end similarly to the way his brother’s did—by being supplanted by a QB taken with the first overall pick in the draft.

Yeah, weed isn’t his problem. He’s addicted to not being sober. I’ve been there. He’s also had some really shitty people in his life enable that.

Spoken like someone who doesn't have to deal with the chronic pain that playing football can cause. I'll buy this for drugs that do nothing for pain management, but not for weed.

There are 1696 players on active rosters in the NFL. How many get disciplined for weed?

The low number reflects the fact that the testing regime is a stupidity test. If you are not in the program, you know the window within which you will be tested. After you take and pass that test, you're basically free to do as you please. Absent an encounter with law enforcement, you are home free.

I'm a proponent of changing the rule, but my sympathy in the meantime is limited.

Edit ... with the caveat that I have boundless sympathy for those like Josh who cannot stop because their lives are out of control. The NFL testing may have saved his life.

AP traded to Arizona according to various reporters on twitter
Best days are way gone by. The suspension relating to the child abuse case pretty much ended his career as a prominent running back in the NFL. He'll bounce around or retire at the end of the year.

Yeah he doesnt have much left. Running two yards and falling down probably an upgrade over Chris Johnson's running one yard though, and the coaching staff doesnt seem impressed by Kerwyn Williams. As long as he's not taking Ellington snaps its at least a landing spot where he can get 15 carries and not actively downgrade his team's chances.

I won't be surprised if this ends up being the narrative, but after his 2014 suspension he was first-team All-Pro in 2015, gaining an NFL-best 1485 yards and 11 rushing TDs at 4.5 YPC. Then he tore his meniscus three games into a disappointing 2016, and now he does look done.

Francesa just reports that Giants suspends DRC

Story is DRC refused to play 2nd half on Sunday and had a fight with an unamed team mate.

Trouble in paradise?

Sounds like McAdoo has no control of a brewing clown show in the Jersey swamp.

Hard to see McAdoo surviving till 2018. Kind of interesting that both the recent NY hires (Bowles and McAdoo) had very successful first years, following by awful second years. Jets stuck with Bowles which appears to actually be a solid decision.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie had a convo with Ben McAdoo earlier this week. He came in today and decided to leave team. He's been suspended.

Landon Collins said it was something between DRC and McAdoo that he believes stemmed from Sunday. He even called it an "altercation."

Kimberly Jones‏Verified account @KimJonesSports 1m1 minute ago
Landon Collins said today that DRC & McAdoo had an issue Sunday. I'm also hearing DRC and an assistant coach had "blowup" Tuesday.
