What a fantastic slate of games....after a couple weeks with awesome 3:30 games and a little less enticing noon/primetime games (especially two weekends ago), it's really well spread out too.

Two ranked vs ranked in the noon window, three in the 3:30 window including UGA vs Auburn, and three at night, including 2 other top 10 vs top 10 games.

Washington and Stanford playing at 10:30 on Friday night instead of 8:00 is maddening though. Why on earth wouldn't the Pac 10/FS1 push for an 8:00 start?

I read somewhere that last time ND and Miami played a November matchup with both ranked so highly the #1 song in the country was Milli Vanilli's "Blame it on the Rain."

Because the overhwelming majority of the audience for this game is on the west coast, and they'd lose more western viewers than they'd gain eastern viewers by taking the game almost entirely out of prime time, and while most of its target audience is either at work or driving home. Last year's game did a 13.2 rating in Seattle, helping ESPN to one of its best Friday night results ever.

Also with Bay Area/Valley traffic, because you'd have a half empty Stanford Stadium for most of the first half.

I'm not sure I buy that (the ratings part, not the traffic part), but couldn't find any evidence to back it up. Earlier in the year Chris Peterson railed against the late windows for so many of their games, just seems like especially on a night without competition from other games, moving the game up would get significantly better ratings.

I don't think a coach's preference for not playing Saturday night games has much to do with Friday afternoon ratings. It's pretty straightforward. People with jobs have a hard time watching 5pm games on Friday night, and by far the greatest interest in this game are in two west coast markets.

They know what they're doing here. I mean, earlier this year, more than a million more people watched USC-Washington State at 10:30 than watched Miami-Duke at 7pm on the same channel. (Miami was ranked #14, and Duke #27. Not much different than the #9 vs. #29 matchup this week.)

I think to most college football fans, there's an enormous difference between the SC/WSU and Miami/Duke game. That's opinion though, so I dug up some #'s from last year. We'll have a good comparison once #'s come out, because Washington/Stanford was played last year on a Friday night and it got a 2.0 rating (with 3.33 million people watching) as a 9:00 Eastern game. I'll bet you it doesn't top that #. There was an Oregon vs Cal game later in the year that kicked off on a Friday night at 10:30 that had 1.51 million viewers (no rating for it). Not a direct comp since 1st game is better, but 2X more viewers in an earlier time slot says something.

Some other Thursday/Friday night early vs late night #'s (involving Pac 10 teams) from last year:

Baylor vs Rice .9 and then ASU vs UTSA .4 (two horrible games)
TCU vs SMU .9 and then USC vs Utah .7 (Pac 10 game clearly better)
Va Tech vs Pitt 1.2 and then Cal vs USC .8 (Pac 10 game better in my opinion)
Oklahoma vs Iowa State 1.399 million viewers vs UCLA vs Colorado 536 thousand viewers (Colorado actually good last year, so nod to Pac 10 game)
UNC vs Duke 1.551 million viewers vs Utah vs Arizona State 512 thousand viewers (both blah)

Additionally, the day after Thanksgiving (not a work day for most I'd agree), Washington vs WSU pulled a 1.7 in a 3:30 start besting games on ABC (Houston vs Memphis) and CBS (Arkansas vs Missouri) - two lousy games, but proof the nation will watch the Pac-10 if convenient.

The Pac-10 put their title game at 9 on a Friday last year and it got a 3.4. If they thought they'd max out ratings at 10:30 they'd have done it, but they know they wouldn't have.

Very frustrated I can't watch that game, and am stuck with Cinci vs Temple if I want to watch a game Friday. Huge missed opportunity for the Pac 10 and Fox sports.

No, we won't have a good comparison, and of course it won't top last year. Last year's matchup was between two undefeated Top 10 teams. And it was on ESPN. This year Stanford is unranked, opened as an 8.5-point underdog at home, and the game is on FS1. And as I told you, it was one of espn's highest rated Friday games in history. Largely because of Seattle's 13.2. This year's game is at 7:30 pm in Seattle, and I'll bet you all the yuan in Shenzhen it doesn't do a 13.2 Also it was a 9:30 Eastern game , not 9pm.

LOL, Jesus Christ. Yeah, what it says is that ESPN knows what it's doing. That is an incredible number for a 2-4 Oregon vs. 3-3 Cal game.

I know I've already LOLed, but you're slaying me. Why don't you just move to the West Coast? Then you can watched all the unranked 4-3 USC games against other unranked 4-3 teams you want. You won't be subjected to any 39-36 barnburners between 5-2 east coast teams. You can watch USC play every single week!

But if they thought it would max out at 8 pm like you want, wouldn't they have done that? And the game actually kicked off at almost 6:30. Here's a photo from 6 pm, which should tell you all you need to know about why they don't put a frigging regular season game on at 5pm on a Friday night..

Looks like you put in a lot of work here, but none of it is the least bit persuasive.

Jesus Christ guy, lighten up. and you're dead wrong, the game would rate higher this year if it was on earlier in the night....weird that they're moving the championship game to 8 Eastern/5 Pacific this year, they should have consulted you I guess, guess espn fked up by moving the time up.

So if this year's ratings are lower, will you STFU?

No, you won't. Because you know they WILL be significantly lower. Partly because the game is on ESPN not Fox in odd years. And FOX of course kicks its ass each time. Which makes it apples to oranges, just like every other comparison you've made.

About as likely as you acknowledging defeat when you see the #'s for this Friday's game. I'm pretty sure the two of us will always come up with a way to spin things in our direction (the match-up was worse, the competition in the time-slot was tougher, it was on ESPN and not fox, etc). Fun back and forth, let's call us both winners because we both get to enjoy the big Templ/Cinci game on Friday night at least.

Back to this week’s slate of games, I am beyond stoked for the matchups. I’m really intrigued by the U vs. ND game, partially out of nostalgia for my childhood, partially to see what both teams really are, and partially to see the Miami D go against that power Norte Dame O line. The Big 12 have an interesting scenario where TCU and Oklahoma might be playing each other twice, so whoever wins will likely have to win again against the same team. Seems like a difficult proposition to me. We will find out how for real Georgia is (I think they are very much for real), and if Bama can win with offense as their defense is dinged up (I think they will easily). There are plenty of other interesting games: OSU/MSU, Iowa v. Wisconsin (the Badgers’ only true test going towards the Big 10 Championship game), and OK State v. Iowa State as the winner can still sneak into the Big 12 title game. Oh, and can Texas avenge their loss to Kansas (sigh)?

Great games all around, but I don’t think we will have much more clarity in who makes the playoffs at the end of the week. Just too many variables down the road.

I'm locking myself in my house today. No reason to go outside. The Big Ten East title could be decided in a noon game, and it just gets better from there.

Yale clinches at least a share of the Ivy League title with a come from behind 35-31 victory over Princeton. First time since 2006. If they beat Harvard next week, it will be Yale’s first solo title since 1980.

Absolutely ludicrous TD catch by David Sills for West Virginia, completely laid out in the back of the end zone, gets one foot down and maintains control even though he basically caught the ball as his arms were slamming into the ground. Only person in the stadium that thought he caught it was the ref on the scene who called it a TD, and it was confirmed.

Sills has 2 td's today, and leads the FBS with 18 touchdown receptions on the season.

    Let's go Miami.

Wiscy lays the beatdown on Iowa today. Would have been even worse if not for two pick 6's for Iowa's defense. Wisconsin is the real deal, and I hope they get into the playoff.

I just learned that none of the three backup QBs who transferred from Alabama last year won starting jobs at any of their schools and none of them have seen the field this year.

Why can't alabama (and the SEC in general) ever recruit good QBs?

Texas A&M QB Nick Starkel has 416 yards passing, and 4 td's in the 1st half (and they are in the red zone again). He started the 1st game of the year, and this is his first start since. Anyone remember, did he get hurt in the opener or something? If not, and Sumlin benched him, Sumlin should be fired at halftime.

If Miami doesn't start fucking wrapping up when they tackle, Adams will eventually bust one. They didn't wrap up on the opening kickoff, the first third down play on defense, and now the 1st run by Adams on this drive, and the ND offensive players are skilled enough to bounce off and keep going.

I like 72, couple field goals early.

    Touchdown Miami. Hellls yeah.

Alabama in a dogfight at Mississippi State. 14-14 at halftime, and MSU already has 100 yards rushing against an injury ravaged Bama defense.

With an 8 point lead, ball inside the Utah 20, and 3 minutes left, Washington State passes, and it gets picked off. Never change Leach. A field goal effectively would have ended it.
