Duke can't shoot.
But he’s always said if you’re gonna have an off night from 3 - do it before the NCAAs!
Duke is weak.
& ur drunk
The streak is over.
Edit: Honestly, Coach K should be embarrassed losing 2 of 3 to this lesser UNC team. But, whatevs, he thrives on past performance so all is good.
Sweet finish, Grayson
Way too close for comfort. That was a bad final 100 seconds
#1 Virginia v. #6 North Carolina gotdamn Tar Heels (8:30 pm)
Ugly ending but pretty result.
Duke could win the real tournament at this point, and their season would almost still be a disappointment
I love the ACC. Only there can a team be ranked #6 in-conference, but be #5 or heavens #4, with a win, in the NCAA.
With a win, they'll get a 2 seed.
They are already a 2. With a win they may well pass Xavier
"... Do you think that was the only time someone was hipped in the game? If you look in the low post, that's going on all the time. So it happened at half court, they got it, it's done. That didn't win or lose the game."
Because throwing a hip check at midcourt and boxing out in the paint are similar. I know he's suspended Allen before, but maybe don't make excuses for your players when they've done it again.
I'm not buying this #1 seed talk for a second, but to be fair they tied for third and lost out on the tiebreakers to put them sixth.
It will take a beyond great effort to beat Virginia, but if you had to play a fourth game in four days a slow tempo'd game is probably what you would want. Also even with a loss it feels like mission accomplished for Carolina, picking up three quadrant one wins, improving their Kenpom D from the 40's or 50's to 25th, getting revenge on Miami, and winning the season series from Duke. Winning the whole thing would be the cherry on top.
B2B poor coaching seasons.
Not sure how you arrive at that. KenPom, Sagarin and BPI all have them Top 3 after the loss - i.e. a 1-seed.
There's no "pedigree BS" in any of those systems - only algorithms designed to predict future performance as accurately as possible. Pedigree gets you a higher seed when you win a conference tourney or regular season because the committee (probably rightly) wants to reward teams for those accomplishments. That's why Kansas will get a 1 seed despite being ranked No. 10, 7 and 8 to Duke's 3, 2 and 3.
So really it's pretty much the opposite of what you and the other haters claim.
I'm a Duke fan.
Jay Bilas adores UNC.
Congrats to UVA
UNC looks like a 2, mostly likely to Omaha bracket.
Amazing season for Virginia.
I agree UNC to the Kansas bracket.
Duke likely to Nova in the East IMO.
I'd be pretty bummed if they ended up in Nashville and not Charlotte given their metrics, but it is what it is.
I'd probably prefer Duke end up in Nashville anyway. Would work out best for everyone. Duke seems to lose when they play in the same sub-regional as UNC.
Interesting parallel that Duke and UNC are both 2 seeds and could end up playing against Rhode Island and Providence respectively in the second round.
Fine. I apologise for calling you a hater. But how do you justify what you said? You imply that they earned a 3-seed slot but that pedigree moved them to a 2-seed. The independent metrics all have them as a top 3 team in the country (using slightly different algorithms) with KenPom having two of the 1 seeds deserving a 3 (KU ranked 9th) and a 4 (Xavier ranked 14th). Sagarin would have them as a 2 and 3 respectively.
NO FIRST ROUND EXIT BABY
good to see the team comfortable shooting in this dome
Yeah but watch em shoot like 42% on Saturday
Bagley has the most single season dunks in Duke history
He has also out dunked all of Duke’s opponents by a combined 4
Duke up to 7th in kenpom defense and passed UVA for #2 overall.
Somehow this Duke team is flying completely under the radar. They are right there with Villanova as one of the best teams left in the country. They improved a lot this weekend IMO. Hard to remember a smoother opening weekend from the last 10 years.
Edit: the last time Duke won both opening weekend games by 20+ was 2004 - the year they lost to UConn in the Final Four. They beat Alabama State 96-61 and Seton Hall 90-62 that year.
Totally agree. It’s nice to see a bit more bench play too, with Bolden putting in some solid minutes. The big lineup with Delaurier playing the 3 has been quite interesting and could be an important addition to Duke’s game. Of course that could change against teams that have more size to match Carter and Bagley than Iona and URI.
If duke makes it to the final 4, they really do seem to match up well with Villanova. Of course if Bridges shoots like he did in that second half I don’t think nova can lose... But really, I have to imagine nova would get hammered inside— Spellman is strong but that’s about all they’ve got to bang inside.
My friend here is a nova grad and so so obnoxious that I really need Villanova to lose. Making matters worse he’s and eagles fan too, he just doesn’t deserve any more wins. Telling him Jay Wright’s suits are ugly goes a long way but not far enough.
To put a period on the end of Carolina's season, seems like it was always destined to end that way, against a strong defensive club with an interior presence. Hand to God, out of all the 5/6/7 seed round of 32 matchups that looked like it would be where Carolina landed, they were the team I most wanted to avoid and of course didn't.
Still a perfectly acceptable season coming off a title and with the obvious roster deficiencies the way Roy wants to play the game. I thought it was maybe the best coaching job he's done...coming into the season I thought Carolina was like a 9 seed that would go sub 500 in the league. So at the end of the day I think they overachieved in the season and underachieved in the tourney. In hindsight, playing all those games in NYC probably took a toll on a team that didn't have much depth and was heavily reliant on two or three guys from the starting five really having big games.
Hate to see two kids like Joel and Theo who gave so much joy to the program and to everybody connected with the program go out that way, but that's the way it goes, rarely the way you want it to. They're still champions and that will be what I remember.
Coach K doesn’t beat Big East teams in San Antonio...
Is the UNC-CH game this Thursday or is it on Friday?
Long article on Grayson today on ESPN. This stood out to me:
"If you booed [Redick], he played good," Allen said. "If you booed him louder, he played even better. And if you cussed him and that stuff, he'd walk off the court with a win. I respect the heck out of that, but I've never thrived off the booing. I don't want to talk to the crowd. For me, it was dealing with it in my own way, and I'm still figuring that out."

Hard to pick against a 23(!) year old PG in Devnote' Graham in an Elite 8 matchup, especially when he is going against 19 year old Trevon Duval at Duke who has been shaky all year.
Stupid fact - Graham, from Raleigh, was going to App State (recruited by Jason Capel) but idiot Capel got fired and he decommitted and went to Kansas. If a damn UNC person could do his damn job and not get fired, then an old ass Graham wouldn't be leading this Kansas team.
Does Duke play the early or late final four game on Saturday?
Your life is miserable and I feel badly for you
Anyway - Duke is like the Patriots. Will be reloaded next year, make another run, and see what happens in the tournament.
Brady and K were both stuck on 3 for a while, then this decade got off the bump and got to 4 and 5 quickly, and now are each in a race to see who gets 6 first.
Jeff Capel off to Pitt. That's rather surprising.
Agreed. I had heard rumors of Scheyer. Surprised Capel wasn't holding out for something a bit better (or waiting out K) given the current state of the Pitt program but he probably things he can do well there.
Capel was the recruiting guru - he'll be fine at Pitt.
Either a) he got soft word from K that he wasn't going to be the successor, or b) K still has 4-5 years left in him and wants Capel to get some head coaching experience before he comes back
Capel has head coaching experience but likely needs to reestablish his bonafides there.
Capel is/was a terrible coach. Great recruiter though.
Chris Carrawell is going to replace Capel on the staff
Not sure who is supposed to start the 2019 thread...
Carolina went to the national title game the last two times you started it so I vote you haha
Come back, Wendell!
Carter officially declared
