2016 Seattle Seahawks - HMD no more

Now that the Superbowl is over I feel comfortable starting a new 2016 thread.

The biggest news (IMHO) out of Superbowl X was the retirement of Marshawn "Beast Mode" Lynch and what that means for the future of the Seattle Seahawks.

Lynch's retirement immediately saves Seattle $6.5M in cap space for 2016 (with the option of saving another $5M between 2017 and 2018 if Seattle goes after his bonus - which the team is not expected to do).

The savings Lynch provides by retiring will be put to good use as Seattle has many holes to fill and many free agents to (re)sign. The biggest and most obvious hole is the offensive line, and with the impending departure of LT Okung to free agency, Seattle is in the market for a blind side protector for Wilson in addition to the rest of the well discussed OL needs. JR Sweezy is also heading into free agency but he can be considered a replacement level guard and Seattle will only sign him if the deal makes sense for the team.

The other three significant impending FA's are OLB/DE Bruce Irvin, CB Jeremy Lane, and WR Jermaine Kearse.

Irvin is expected to move on as the cost to resign him outweighs the value he provides. His cost is likely to be significantly higher than Seattle can or will want to afford given the recent contract signed by PHL DE Vinny Curry. Resigning Irvin goes completely against John Schneider's philosophy of drafting linebackers and signing pass rushers. There are too many teams that have cap space and need at the OLB/DE position for Irvin to give Seattle a bargain deal.

Lane is an interesting case in that he has missed 19 of the last 32 games Seattle has played over the last two seasons and didnt have his first career interception until SuperBowl XLIX. The teaser for Lane is that he has followed a long line of successful CBs in SEA and could easily have some team take a contract flyer on him. Seattle will look for a 1-2 year deal on Lane which should allow him to prove he can survive the physical demands of the NFL and still sign a big deal when he turns 27 or 28 years old.

Kearse has played his last snap in a Seahawks uniform. Kearse is a decent-to-good receiver but he has maxed out his talent and isnt worth a large deal from Seattle. Kearse is looking to get paid this off-season and has said as much on twitter.

There are three other player who are under contract but are worth mentioning as what Seattle does with them in the off-season will significantly help shape the teams future.

The first to mention is Kam Chancellor who is entering year three of the four year contract extension he signed in 2013. His current cap number is $6.1M and if released/traded he could provide Seattle $4.1M in savings. Chancellor got burned frequently on pass coverage once he returned from his holdout and he wasnt the same enforcer Seattle had seen in previous years. Pete Carroll has said he wants to keep the team together but very few of the scenarios I have read keep Chancellor in Seattle.

The second under contract player worth mentioning is Michael Bennett who is also entering the third year of a four year contract signed in 2014. Bennett is criminally underpaid compared to the value he has provided to Seattle. Bennett will probably play out the 2016 season and then get resigned/extended when he has a single year left in his deal.

The final under contract player worth mentioning is Doug Baldwin who is entering the final year of the contract extension he signed in 2013. Baldwin elevated his game this year and became the primary and reliable target for Russell Wilson. I have zero clue what Seattle will do with Baldwin because he is not a true/pure number one receiver but he is the best Seattle has right now and he also has a great relationship with Wilson.

I see the Hawks trading down in the draft again from their #1 pick to get multiple picks. I really want them to invest a lot of draft capital in the O-Line because it has been such a disaster and I don't really see another way to fix it with their cap situation. Although that's been a double-edged sword since in the 6 drafts under PC/JS, they have invested 2 #1s (Okung, Carpenter), 1 #2 (Britt), 1 #3 (Moffitt), 2 #4s (Glowinski, Poole), 2 #6s (Soloki - A DT convert, Garrett Scott - Retired-Medical), and 3 #7s (Sweezy - DT Convert, Ryan Seymour - Washout, Michael Bowie). Not exactly a stellar draft record. Not horrible either, so somewhere in the middle.

Sweezy can go unless he comes back cheap. Okung is gone, I really can't see him staying if he gets any kind of long term offer. If the offers all dry up, then he might come back on a "prove it" 1 year deal. Britt is fucking horrible and needs to get out of the starting lineup. He can be a bench guy with his versatility of "playing" 4 positions on the line. I'm okay with Lewis and Gilliam, although in a perfect world they'd be upgraded too. They'll give Glowinski, Soloki and Poole a chance to make the team next year. So it's likely 3 spots on the O-line that need filling. And more continuity issues at the beginning of the year most likely.

Seahawks re-sign DT Ahtyba Rubin to a 3 year deal. No dollars yet, but I am guessing in the area of $9M with probably $3M guaranteed.

Love this as long as he's not too expensive. He was a key cog in the run D.

Edit: Actual deal is $12M over 3 years, including a $4.5M signing bonus and per Davis Hsu of Field Gulls, the breakdown is as follows:

2016 - $1M base salary, 500k game bonuses, total potential cap hit - $3M
2017 - $1.7M base salary, 500k game bonuses, total potential cap hit - $3.7M
2018 - $3.3M base salary, 500k game binuses, total potential cap hit - $5.3M

So 2018 is probably not going to happen, as he's a cut with $1.5M in dead money then.

Fair deal for both sides.

I must be living under a rock because I didn't even know Marshawn retired. Even though he didn't play for my favorite team, I will miss watching him. When he was good, god damn was he GOOD.

Hawks re-sign CB Jeremy Lane to a 4 year, $23M deal with $11M guaranteed. Good deal given some of the other FA CB deals out there.

The Browner deal is for the veteran minimum of $760,000 with $0 guaranteed. The Saints are still on the hook for $1.99M so they'll be paying Browner more to play for the Seahawks than the Hawks will if he makes the team, which is, frankly, a long shot.

I read somewhere that his cap number will be only $600K if he makes the team, but I'm not sure how that happens.

Also, Chris Clemons' deal to return is 1 year, $1.5M with a $1M base salary and only a $150K signing bonus, with additional $350K in workout/roster bonuses.

In other words, two cheap deals to bring back vets to see if they have anything left. Low risk, medium reward. I don't mind these deals at all.

I believe there is a special cap treatment for veterans based upon years of service and min contract so that they cap out as a much "younger" minimum salary. Thus teams won't be as reluctant to sign and keep vets if they have a younger guy they think might give them 80% of the much more expensive veteran.

It's a way to keep chance alive for veterans to stick around a little longer on teams as roleplayers that teams wouldn't want taking up too much cap space.

I'm pretty happy with the draft. Traded up to get more athleticism on the DL, traded down in the 1st and still got the guy they wanted along with picking up a three. Picked 3 OL which was almost a must. There will be plenty of competition on the line this year. Really psyched about Vannett, as they needed an in-line TE badly and hopefully he'll fit the bill. The 3 RBs was an odd touch, but 2 seem to be in the Lynch/Rawls mode and Prosise has a really good chance to replace Fred Jackson as the 3rd down back. Kind of surprised at the lack of a CB, but they must not have found someone they really liked or they knew they could bring in a bunch of UDFAs.

Courtesy of Field Gulls, here's the draft results for the Seahawks.

Round 1, Pick 26 (31): Germain Ifedi, OL Texas A&M
Round 2, Pick 18 (49): Jarran Reed, DL Alabama
Round 3, Pick 27 (90): C.J. Prosise, RB Notre Dame
Round 3, Pick 31 (94): Nick Vannett, TE Ohio State
Round 3, Pick 35 (97) (Comp pick): Rees Odhiambo, OL Boise State
Round 5, Pick 8 (147) (From Patriots): Quinton Jefferson, DL Maryland
Round 5, Pick 34 (171) (Comp pick): Alex Collins, RB Arkansas
Round 6, Pick 40 (215) (Comp pick): Joey Hunt, C TCU
Round 7, Pick 4 (243) (From Patriots): Kenny Lawler, WR Cal
Round 7, Pick 26 (247): Zac Brooks, RB Clemson

And the rather lengthy UDFA list as of tonight:

-- Oregon linebacker Christian French will sign with the Seahawks, per his agent.
-- FAU DT Brandin Bryant says he's agreed with the Seahawks.
-- North Alabama CB Darvell Harris signs with Seahawks.
-- Illinois State DE/OLB David Perkins will sign with the Seahawks, per a report.
-- Colorado State-Pueblo WR Deontrae Cooper tweeted "Seattle it is."
-- Western Kentucky TE George Fant signed with the Seahawks, per a report.
-- CSU corner DeAndre Elliot is heading to the Seahawks, per a report.
-- USC running back Tre Madden signs with Seattle, per his agency.
-- TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin tweeted that he signed with the Seahawks.
-- Rutgers linebacker Steve Longa headed to Seahawks, per a report.
-- Ohio State safety Tyvis Powell will sign with the Seahawks, per reports.
-- Wisconsin athlete (safety?) Tanner McEvoy reportedly signed with the Seahawks.
-- Michigan State receiver DeAnthony Arnett tweeted that he's headed to the Seahawks.
-- FIU defensive lineman Lars Koht signed with the Seahawks.
-- Utah State safety Marwin Evans to the Seahawks.
-- Boston College running back David Dudek to the Seahawks.
-- Arizona offensive lineman Lene Maiava signed with the Seahawks.
-- Jackson State receiver Devin Fosselman to the Seahawks.
-- Washington DL/FB Taani Tupou reportedly signed.
-- ECU DE/OLB Montese Overton signed with the Seahawks, per a report.
-- Texas Tech DE Pete Robertson looks like he's signed with Seattle.
-- Middle Tennessee guard Jaylen Hunter reportedly to join the Seahawks.

I had Elliott on my hoped-for draft list, so happy to see him picked up as a UDFA.

Of the UDFA I am most thrilled with Boykin. Boykin fits the SEA system well and can easily be considered a younger replacement for Tavaris Jackson which is exactly what SEA wanted to do.

Beast Mode officially placed on the reserve/retired list. They will take a $5M cap hit this year instead of spreading it over two years. Their cap remaining is officially a little over $11M, but accounting for all of the extras, they really only have about $5M left. I'd say they're done shopping and heading to training camp with what they have.

A) this is a Pats board
B) as far as I know, he didn't get hurt on this play
C) he was part of one of the greatest plays in Pats and NFL history

In no way was I making light of his injury or decision to retire.

Yeah, well, this is a Seahawks thread and the same trolling standards apply as if any other fans were going to shit all over the Patriots anywhere else in this forum. We don't go on and on about Deflategate in all of the other threads, so we'd appreciate the same consideration here. I would think most people would agree that it was completely unnecessary trolling.

I wouldn't call it trolling. I'd say that, as a Pats fan, he probably has no other point of reference for Lockette but that play. I don't think he was trying to twist a knife, I just think he had no value to add so he posted that .gif.

He's more guilty of lacking message board impulse control than trolling, which might actually be worse.

Either way, we can all agree they should have ran the football.

Correct, and also, pretty much any excuse to watch the play over and over and over again.

I know this is hard to understand for a ton of folks here but if one's post doesnt have value to add DONT FUCKING POST. It is a really simple concept to execute in two easy steps
  1. Think about the value your post has to the topic at hand
  2. If it doesnt add value or adds negative value then DONT FUCKING POST

Actually I thought I was admitting it was a fairly shitty post and that KFP nailed it
Here is a novel concept. Stop posting shitty posts. And if you are going to post them then please keep them out of threads where they dont belong. Your posting one of the best plays from the Patriots history in a thread about the team where the highlight was against is trolling plain and simple.

A) this is a Pats board
Its a Red Sox board first or have you forgotten about that team since the Pats have won more recently. It might be a NE sports board but the quality of information is helped by having topics that branch out. You posting Pats fanboi shit in threads where it doesnt need to be posted significantly hurts the quality of information.

In short stop sucking as a poster.

Im looking for you to learn from this little experience and grow even a little bit. I dont want an apology but some situational awareness about where/when/how you post would sure be nice.

WR Angry Doug Baldwin signed to a 4 year contract extension for $46 million, $24.25 million guaranteed. That seems like an awful lot even as much as I like ADB. No details yet, so no idea how it's going to break down, but he was scheduled to count $6.325 million against the 2016 cap,so I don't anticipate much change there. Curious to see what the next big WR contract is going to be and how that shakes out.

Seahawks sign former Pro Bowl G Jahri Evans to help bolster the O-line. Preliminary thoughts are that he slots in at RG, rookie German Ifedi, who has done well in camp, moving to RT and J'Marcus Webb gets benched. I hope Evans has something left, it would be nice to have one solid guy without question marks.

FWIW, Saints fans and PFF didn't/don't think he had much left in the tank; his performance declined precipitously over the last few years. I'm not a PFF guy, but they had Josh Kline rated higher than Evans in 2015 and Kline was pretty much dogshit, like the rest of the Pats line.

Brandon Browner leads the first set of cuts down to 75. He really didn't show much in the few times on the field, so he likely wasn't adapting well to safety. Sealver Siliga ended up on IR, so he's not gone, but also he's not going to be on the team. The only other notable name was C Patrick Lewis, who was the starting center the last half of last season. The Justin Britt experiment seems to have taken and 6th rounder Joey Hunt has made a good impression on the coaches. 7th round pick Zac Brooks was also cut; he was injured a lot of preseason and he was clearly behind Rawls, Michael and Prosise, as well as the other RBs still on the squad, 5th rounder Alex Collins and UDFA Troymaine Pope.

Stole a win today, which I'm fine with. Offense was OK at times, and certainly better than not before Wilson got hurt.

The defense was fantastic throughout.

At the end of the day, though, it feels like they should've lost. Rough opener.

1-0.

Wilson had his ankle x-rayed after game per ESPN, but no word on anything except Wilson saying he'll be fine.

Something to keep an eye on next week against a tough Rams defense.
