2 new PS guys (filling in spots after promoting Gaffney & losing Sankey):

@DMooreNFL
It's possible that both Austin Traylor (81 - TE) & Chase Farris (66 - OL) were both signed to practice squad. #Patriots have 2 spots open.

TE Traylor was with the Chargers. OL Ferris was with the Lions.

More TEs!

@RyanHannable
Patriots reportedly sign TE Matt Lengel off Bengals’ practice squad

@MarkDanielsPJ
New Patriots TE Matt Lengel was on Northeastern's football team in 2009, but transferred to Eastern Kentucky when the FB program ended

@MikeReiss
New Patriots TE Matt Lengel had signed with Bengals as undrafted free agent in 2015. Spent last 2 years on their practice squad.

BRING BACK THE 4-TE GOAL LINE FORMATION!!

I know you are kidding, but what would a Patriots' 0-4 personnel set be like? Empty backfield, a WR - say, a deep threat like Hogan - Gronk, Bennett, and two blocking TEs. It's essentially a 3-reciever package with 7 in protection, but would mess with the defense. Or substitute Hogan for Edelman or White, split out, with the option to motion into the backfield.

Okay, I'll stop now.

They did this a little in Week 1 last year, but they basically haven't had four TE on the roster since (and don't now):

The fifth guy really has to be a RB because you want the run threat with that grouping. And ideally one of the TE is an H-back type who can play FB.

One could run a double wing with 4 TEs, but that is really more of a Brissett-with-a-thumb-injury formation.

do they just revert to IR? if so, aren't the still eligible to return? I don't think anyone has been brought off of IR yet
I think they have to be added to the roster first, before they can be placed on IR. Not sure they want to drop two guys to do that. (Assuming they can just be left on PUP even after becoming non-activatable)

Yes, they have to be put back on the 53 man roster to be eligible for IR. They never were active this season so as joe dokes says they'd have to cut 2 players just to do that. They just stay on PUP for the rest of the season.

Patriots have activated Jacoby Brissett off of injured reserve. To make room they released DL Woodrow Hamilton. I'm not terribly surprised that they activated Brissett rather than having him inactive for the rest of the year. Activating him was the only way he could continue to practice with the team, and the only way they could preserve him as an option of terrible things happen. I am surprised that Hamilton is gone though, as I viewed him as the next man up in the DT spot. I would have guessed a defensive back would have been the guy to go.

I think they figure they can sneak Hamilton to the practice squad, while they couldn't do that with any of the DB options (Coleman? Richards?). Hamilton hasn't been active since Week 6. If they have a DT injury, they'll bring him or Kilgo up from the PS.

I was worried about getting Hamilton through to the PS. But it appears that you are right:

From Mike Reiss: "Rookie DT Woodrow Hamilton is back in Patriots' offices at this time, preparing to sign to practice squad. Team has open spot."

This is good news. I like having that depth at DT.
