I'm not 100% sure who CWood is - I'm guessing Charles Woodson? Is that like your pet name for him or did I miss the CWood era? - but assuming so, he missed three weeks, then had the bye before coming back and not exactly looking good during the playoffs.

Carr is going in for surgery tomorrow for his break, so presumably his situation is worse. Which leaves McGloin running the show so the first round bye isn't exactly locked up since they have to go to Denver next week and KC has the tie breaker. It's quite likely the Raiders will be opening the playoffs on the road now. Granted that will be against the Texans, but then they'd be bringing him back (assuming all best case miracles) to face the Pats or Chiefs on the road. The Raiders are most likely done. As is Carr.
My pet name? CWood is his universal nickname.

My condolences to you Gun. Hope your expectations weren't too high for Cook today.
Thanks man. That was quite the fall from the 11 minute mark in the 4th quarter on Christmas Eve to the season being over 14 days later. What we learned over the last two weeks is that even with a healthy Carr (pinky still broken, of course), the defense would not have been good enough to beat New England and maybe not Pittsburgh.

I don't fault the Raiders for their lack of QB depth, nor do I blame them for not benching Cook for an injured McGloin. McGloin is a FA, so he will be in someone else's camp next year, and considering how multiple staffs have fallen in love with Scrappy McMoxie in Oakland, I imagine he will steal some more talented QB's job as a back up next year. It just won't be in Oakland, that will be Cook's job.

All of that said, 12 wins was two wins better than my pre-season expectations, so it was a good year overall, despite the fucking horrible and unfair ending to what seemed like it was going to be such a feel good story.

The Texans TEs owned the middle of the field this weekend, but how much longer does Donald Penn have? No way I want Menelik Watson there. Maybe this season allows for the long term answer at LT to be found.

Congrats to Khalil Mack as an All-Pro at two positions(DE and LB).

Is Cook the right guy though? Carr is young, you don't need a "QB of the future" type. Would they be better off chasing a vet to serve as the backup, like a Matt Moore type?

La Mancha.
I was about to ask about Carr's prognosis but Googled it instead. This is the first I found, which was from 29-Dec. It says no ligament damage, surgery went well, 6-8 weeks recovery time. I assume he'll be good as new come training camp? Good for him. I'm starting to like to Raiders.

Cost control is a big factor there---that's a big part of why Pats have gone with a series of young QBs behind Brady, imo. Recently it is somewhat about 'who is next' for they've been using cheap backups since, what, 2006? Raiders may well see it the same way, and there's logic to it.

Based on how the other Green Bay / Ted Thompson disciple GMs (Seattle, KC) do it, I think it is likely that the Reggie McKenzie's Raiders draft or bring in another young QB to back up Carr and go with Cook as the back up until he either signs elsewhere as a FA or is traded for picks. That has been the pattern in those places once they found a franchise QB like Wilson or Rogers. Nick Foles in KC this year is probably the only exception to this pattern. Both Green Bay and Seattle are a Trent Cole alligator roll on their QB's leg away from Brett Hundley or Trevone Boykin starting a playoff game.

I don't see the Raiders paying for the "Matt Moore type", as much as that might have changed the last two weeks. I think they have plans for their salary cap money elsewhere. Seeing how Carr stayed healthy for his first 47 NFL games, I think they are happy to pay Cook $660K next season, roll those dice and spend the $4M that a Matt Moore / Ryan Fitzpatrick / Bryan Hoyer style back up would cost on extending Carr, Mack & Jackson, resigning some of their own FAs, or taking a run at someone like Erick Berry or Dontari Poe.

@Gunfighter 09

Raiders need a new OC
“@RapSheet: Sources: The #Raiders need a new offensive coordinator. Bill Musgrave not expected to return to the team for 2017. Had 6th ranked offense.”

“@JohnMiddlekauff: #Raiders will also be moving on from DBs coach Marcus Robertson who’s contract wasn’t renewed, per source”

“@JohnMiddlekauff: Todd Downing will be the next OC of the #Raiders, per source”

Penn is 33 and is signed for next season. I assume they are going to sign Watson, unless his price gets silly and draft a developmental tackle to replace Penn after 2017. They also have the option of adding another guard and moving Osemele out to LT, where he played in 2015 for the Ravens.

I am a little stunned by Musgrave not coming back, even though I am still pissed off about the Clowney interception of the screen pass that all of American knew was coming from their couches. I think this is a matter of wanting to keep Downing more than they were afraid of losing Musgrave. It is telling that Musgrave both interviewed for the Oregon job and didn't get it, despite being their third most famous / productive QB alum for the Ducks. In Jack I trust, but I really hope Downing is as good as Derek Carr and other say he is, and that they can find a quality QBs coach to replace him in that role.

More surprising to me is if they keep KNJ as D coordinator. A case can certainly be made that Musgrave held the offense back rather than being one of the impetuses for their success, but what's the case for keeping Norton?
