The game itself is silly but most of the time, I think the awards do make sense and are honors for those who get them. The fan voting ended yesterday and the awards will be announced next Tuesday.

So who on the Patriots deserves to go this year?
Who will likely go, deserving or not, again, from the Patriots?

This man's opinions:
Deserving (in order of most deserving to least):
  • TB12. It goes without saying. Even in a 12-game year, it's been one of his best. And as the MVP thread is showing, he is arguably the best in the game this year.
  • LGBT. Leading the league in rushing TDs and is second overall in total TDs. Throw in that he's 5th in the league in rushing yards, and 3rd in the AFC, and I think he deserves what would be his first selection.
  • Malcolm. Go! Go to the Pro Bowl. He doesn't have many INT's but he does have a lot of Passes Defensed (tied for 6th overall in the league). He's excellent against the run as well.
  • Matthew Slater. Because he's awesome in coverage. Just don't let him handle the ball.
  • Patrick Chung. He's had a really great season, leading the team in tackles (an admittedly weird stat but one that matches the eye test). He's rarely been beat badly. He's pretty great in limiting YAC, and he's also been very good in run support.
  • Marcus Cannon. Another quietly great season. Perhaps he seems more deserving in comparison to the swinging door he was last year, and I don't watch nearly enough NFL to compare him to other RT's, but he's been pretty much everything you could want in an RT.
  • Alan Branch/Malcolm Brown. I list them together as my thoughts for each of them are pretty much the same: NT's aren't flashy, but each had done exactly what one would hope for in that role. Neither is the force that Vince was or even Ted Washington, but they've each made a lot of plays, and good ones.
Who will get voted in (in order of most likely to least):
  • TB12
  • Malcolm!
  • Slater
  • LGBT

Deserves to be in but one minor issue aka 90-99% in
TB12 (suspension)
Gronk (injury)
The Butler Did it (not enough INT)

Deserves to be in but may find to be out to get someone else in, excused by minor injury.
Slater

Outside chance
Thuney
McCourty
Hightower

Tiny chance if injuries
Bennett
Cannon
Chung

Black Unicorn is currently 3rd in the AFC among TEs in both yards and TDs. With his expanded non-Gronk role, he could put up a couple more big games and move up both of those ranks. He's got a decent shot right now as is.

Fan voting is done
Not sure when other voting is done but announcements are this McIntyre Tuesday so maybe this next game is considered. Maybe.

As we're seeing in the HOF thread, Pro Bowls have a lasting effect on a player's legacy. That's despite most everyone acknowledging it's mostly a waste of time.

They're also getting less and less valuable as awards. There were 133 'Pro Bowl' players last year, with 39 declining to attend for whatever reason. Jameis Winston was a Pro Bowler last year. He was the eighth alternate. Not eighth in voting, eighth after the six that originally were voted in and that was voting without conferences, so he was 14th in the league. It means crap at this point and I expect it will continue to lose its shimmer going forward if the trend continues. All Pro selections are the true test at this point.
