It could be another month or so before 22nd-rounder J.J. Matajevic decides on college or the Sox.

Matijevic said “it was an unbelievable feeling” when he received a phone call from a Boston scout on Saturday.

The Red Sox were Matijevic's favorite team growing up, he said, and Boston scouted him throughout the 2014 season.

A University of Arizona recruit, Matijevic now faces the decision of whether to go to college or sign a professional contract. The deadline for drafted players to sign contracts is July 18, but Matijevic said he expected to make a final decision before July 9, when he is scheduled to begin at Arizona.

“It's a tough decision,” he said. “Either way, I'll be happy. I'll be happy to go to Arizona, or I'll be happy to begin my professional career. But either way, I'm honored. It's been a crazy ride.”

RE: David Peterson-
Just because he is playing for the Medford Rogues does not mean he wont sign, the liklihood is not that great but he probably isn't signing for whatever the slot or allotment is in the late 20th round. He is a solid top 50-100 player for this draft. He was injured (broken leg) just before the HS season and only got two starts and three relief appearances in HS ball.  Front office wants a little better chance to look at him perhaps; also, I believe the signing deadline is 7/18 which allows few weeks for additional looks before anything happens. The longer it drags out the less likely IMO;  I would not completely shut the door on this one yet.  All said he looked very good for getting off the plane a few hours before.

We can always revise the chart if both he and the Sox surprise us by coming to terms. But the higher-than-projected bonus to Ockimey is going to make it that much harder for the Sox to come up with the coin to satisfy Peterson's demands. All the signs I'm seeing are pointing him to college.

And yeah, there's absolutely zero chance he signs for the $100,000 standard allotment (rounds 11-40). I'd be stunned if he agreed for anything less than the $440k the Sox paid 30th-rounder Nick Longhi last year. As you said, Peterson's a top 100 player. Longhi barely snuck into the BA Top 300 (#296).

The signing deadline being 7/18 is actually an acceleration of the process. It gives teams (and draftees) less time than they've been accustomed to. And it's not just a matter of the Sox waiting to check him out in summer ball for a few weeks -- they'd also have to make sure they have enough cap space (or an affordable-enough overage) to pay the kid. Remember, every dollar over $100k for that slot will count against their cap. If they match Longhi's bonus, that's another $340k on top of the roughly $300k they're already over slot on the 5 picks whose bonuses have been announced/reported. And they haven't signed Chavis yet.

So if they to play the waiting game with a kid with a broken leg, they'd be shooting themselves in the ass by hindering negotiations with the 20 or so other picks who remain unsigned.

By my calculations, the Net $ relative to slot calculation on the first page is off by $60,000. I'm not sure where the error comes from, but they are a combined $317,200 overslot on Kemp and Ockimey and $78,000 under on Kopech, which leaves them $239,200 over, not $299,200 over.

Crap. On my Excel spreadsheet I typo'd his slot figure (222,800 instead of 282,800).

Thanks for the heads-up.

Huskers Illustrated

Nebraska head coach Darin Erstad said Wednesday that he’s confident that draft picks Luis Alvarado and Garret King will end up in Husker uniforms. Alvarado was picked in the 33rd round by Boston and King was taken in the 36th round by the Mets.

“Based on where they’re drafted, the odds are in our favor,” Erstad said on Sports Nightly. “Now I say that and a team the day before the deadline comes and offers them a bunch of money. I don’t see that happening, but we’re not going to let our guard down either. We’re going to have both of those guys in our summer bridge program for the second five weeks…the odds are in our favor for this one, but you just never know.”

@MLBDraft: 58 of top 100 signed; 19 at pick value, 18 under, 21 over. Total $83,791,900; $1,249,000 < combined slot value:

That tweet references this chart, which doesn't show any bonuses for Sox picks Michael Kopech or Sam Travis. We've seen disparate reports on what Kopech signed for, while the latter has said he'll forego his college senior season and ink a deal.

Louisville loses to Texas 4-1, ending their season. Sox' 10th-rounder Cole Sturgeon went 0-for-4 with an RBI today and 1-for-9 in both the Cardinals' CWS losses.

He'll now have 32 days before the July 18 signing deadline to ink a deal with the Sox.

Yup, but that's only on the first 10 rounds. They're still over due to 15th-rounder Kemp signing for $150k over slot.

Here's the latest cap review from the opening post. FWIW, the net % relative to signed slots for all rounds is slightly lower than 2.6%. We know the bonuses for Betts & Shepherd were each less than $100,000, but we don't have exact amounts. So to stay on the conservative side, I just left them at $100,000 for calculating it since any sub-slot savings on picks 11 thru 40 doesn't get added back to their cap.

DRAFT CAP UPDATE (6/16, 7:15 pm)

14th rounder Jordan Procyshen has not officially signed, but he does have an agreement in place, just waiting to formally sign the papers. No hint of amount however. Sounds like he had been scouted by John Pyle (Ohio Valley area scout) while playing in Kentucky for at least a few months, and the Sox did their homework on him before selecting him.  He will be assigned to Lowell.  Here's an interview he did on a local radio station this morning: http://okotoksonline.com/images/stories/audio/jordanjune16.mp3

20th-rounder Devon Fisher says he will sign with the Sox, but has one more item on his to-do list

Fisher will report to rookie camp in two weeks, but has some unfinished business to attend to as his Bruins are playing for a state championship this weekend. “I’ve got to leave pretty soon, so hopefully we do well and win a ring and then I will be on my way,” said Fisher.

Mission accomplished.

Congrats to the kid.  If my kid's school couldn't win it (they got bounced by McLean, which is the team Western Branch beat, in the early rounds) I'm glad it's a Sox draftee who did.

So the Sox are only 3 players away from having all of their first 20 picks signed, a quick glance at the last couple of years shows that they've gone 18 or so for 20 in the past. What are the odds on these guys signing?

edit: admitedly hasn't followed the draft much until this year's timely job change made it easier

In all likelihood they had an agreement in place with Steen (9th Rd), or at least a ballpark understanding of what it would take to sign him. Even so, it's not uncommon for high schoolers to try to leverage some extra coin by playing hard to get.

Sturgeon (10th Rd) just had his team get bounced from the College World Series, so I'd be surprised if he didn't sign within a week.

Other than a comment from his college coach that he thinks he'll turn pro, there hasn't been a peep anywhere about Gunn (16th). He's got another year at Arkansas if he wants it.

Per Alex Speier, the Sox have officially announced the signings of a number of the picks noted in the opening post. They include a couple of players that had been reported as reaching agreement: 31st-rounder Alex McKeon and 37th-rounder Hector Lorenzana. The only new names are 23-rounder Derek Miller and 38th-rounder Brandon Show.

Others confirmed as signing: Michael Kopech (1st Supp), Sam Travis (2nd), Chandler Shepherd (13th), Jordan Betts (18th) & Kuehl McEachern (34th).

Deals agreed to pending physicals and other procedural crap: Michael Chavis (1st), Jake Cosart (3rd), Kevin McAvoy (4th), Josh Ockimey (5th), Danny Mars (6th), Reed Reilly (7th), Ben Moore (8th), and the aforementioned Cole Sturgeon (10th).

The latter grouping explains why a number of those draftees are already either in Lowell or Fort Myers, with those assigned to the Spinners already donning uniforms for media day.

Also from Speier's article, there's this:

The only player for whom an agreement to terms is not a fait accompli is ninth-rounder Kevin Steen, a high school pitcher out of Tennessee who showed intriguing athleticism and improving stuff during his brief senior season (he joined the baseball team only late in the year, after the conclusion of basketball season). Steen is playing summer ball, and it remains to be seen if he will reach an agreement with the Sox.

Here's the post with the comment:

mabrowndog said:
Razorbacks head coach Dave Van Horn believes 12th rounder Jalen Beeks & 16th-rounder Michael Gunn will sign.

Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn said earlier in the week that he expected Beeks, Gunn and [Eric] Fisher to sign professional contracts.

Beeks will be officially signing with the Sox shortly. And now, Eric Fisher has signed (with the Marlins). From that article:

Two other Razorbacks were drafted. Michael Gunn is expected to sign with the Red Sox while outfielder Tyler Spoon is expected to return to Arkansas, though he told Stephens Media he wasn't rushing the decision Sunday.

Considering Coach Van Horn is 2-for-3, I'll go ahead and put this one in the "reported signings" column.
