For discussion of the Sox draft as a whole, including their strategy, HS vs college, handedness, positional trends, etc., there's another thread for that.

For a walk down memory lane, here are the post-draft signing threads for 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

SIGNING BONUS RULES & PENALTIES

* All teams have a cap on total signing bonuses, based on the number of picks in the first 10 rounds and how high they are.
* For the 2014 draft, the Red Sox' cap is $6,373,300. That ranks 17th (Houston's is $13,362,200).
* Slot values are assigned to all picks in the first 10 rounds including supplemental and compensatory selections.
* For any bonus to a player in the first 10 rounds that exceeds the slot value, the excess amount will count against the cap.
* Also, for any bonus to a player in rounds 11-40 (or any undrafted free agent) that exceeds $100,000, that excess amount will count against the cap.
* Bonuses at or below $100,000 for players in rounds 11-40 have no effect on a team's bonus pool. Only sub-slot savings on picks in the first 10 rounds are applied to the pool to provide cap relief.
* If a team fails to sign any player picked in the first 10 rounds, the club's bonus pool (and cap) is reduced by the value of that player's slot. Therefore clubs cannot use the money assigned to that player's slot to pay other draft picks.
* The signing deadline is 5:00 pm on July 18.

* PENALTIES - If a team exceeds the cap:

----- By up to 5%, it is taxed 75% on the overage.
----- By 5-10%, it pays the 75% overage tax AND loses its 1st round pick in next year's draft.
----- By 10-15%, it is taxed 100% on the overage AND loses its 1st and 2nd round picks in next year's draft.
----- By more than 15%, it is taxed 100% on the overage AND loses its next two 1st round picks.

The question I have is how low the bonus on Reilly and Sturgeon? I know seniors have zero leverage, but the Sox take it or leave it money went up from 2012 to 2013 for the late round slots to college seniors. Is there some floor amount now, or can predraft deals still be $1000? I read that Kraus was a verbal deal for $1K prior to the selection.

2012: $1K, $10K, $5K, and $1K  to Kraus, Minnich, Miller, Watkins (Seniors rounds 7-10)
2013: $10K, $10K, $10K to Allday, Martin, Grover (Seniors rounds 8-10)

EDIT: Since we only took two seniors in the last half of the slot rounds, I'm thinking we must have deals, or at least parameters, in place for most of the other picks. We don't have many guys we can leverage down compared to years past. Chavis has already stated he's ready to begin his pro career, which aren't words of someone looking to drive a hard bargain.

Alex McKeon (31st) will sign according to his college coach.

TAMIU's Head Baseball Coach, Chad Porter, said McKeon will sign with the Red Sox. Although that means he will not be able to return to the TAMIU baseball field, Coach Porter said he is ecstatic to see one of his player’s dreams come true.

"To have one of your own, to have one of your players have their name get called and they get to live their dream, it's special. That's what you are in this for, you are in this for the kids and I'm the happiest coach in the world right now and I have one of the happiest players in the world. There is no other feeling like it, you can't describe it."

McKeon is playing in a prospects league in West Virginia now, but is expected to go to Fort Myers, FL to sign with Boston.

Jordan Betts (18th) says he will sign.

Betts said he’s glad that the uncertainty is finally over and he can once again concentrate on baseball and the start of his professional career.

“Because of the feedback I got from my coach at Duke and the scouts leading up to the draft, I was really anticipating going on Day 2,” he said. “But then Day 3 starts and I still haven’t heard my name called. But when it finally happens and you see you’re going to be part of a tremendous organization like the Boston Red Sox, your anxiety level quickly evaporates. Now I’m just excited to just play going forward.”

Betts said he hasn’t yet been told where he will begin playing minor league ball. Chances are he’ll spend this summer with the Lowell (Mass.) Spinners of the short-season Class A New York-Penn League.

Josh Pennington (29th) says he will sign -- after he goes under the knife later this month.

Pennington, who has a scholarship offer from St. John's, said he will sign. Pennington, a right-handed pitcher might have been drafted higher, but he injured his elbow in April and will undergo Tommy John surgery later this month.

"For me, it's just a dream come true," Pennington said. "It's the only thing I've ever wanted. When I realized I was going to be a professional baseball player, everything hit me. I became really emotional. Everything hit me."

Pennington said he hoped before the draft that the Red Sox would choose him. Pennington said he will probably sign after Dr. James Andrews performs the Tommy John surgery on June 23.

"They're one of the premier franchises," Pennington said. "They're going to do the right thing for me."

Lo and behold, Karsten Whitson will reportedly sign with the Sox.

Four years, a shoulder surgery and some ups and downs later, the Red Sox have taken a chance on Whitson in the 11th round of the 2014 Draft, one the right-hander is humbled by and grateful for.

He'll forego the one year of eligibility he has remaining because of a medical redshirt and sign with the Red Sox in the coming weeks.

"The Red Sox saw something in me and they're giving me an opportunity to work hard for a team that's sticking their neck out for me," Whitson said by phone Saturday. "Some other teams are looking at negative of my situation. It humbles me that Boston sees positives in a kid that still has a lot to offer."

While he'll still have to deal with the grind of pro baseball, something he won't have to deal with are high expectations from the baseball world. Since the 6-foot-4, 220-pound righty isn't topping any prospect lists in 2014, he's flying under the radar.

"He's ready to prove some people wrong. The pressure will be off of him," said Andy Compton, his coach at Chipley High School. "I think physically, he's ready to go. Once he gets on the mound and gets in a rhythm, he'll definitely advance [through the system]."

Whitson will get another chance with the Red Sox, and he's excited to not top any lists like he was coming out of high school. He's excited to take care of himself on the mound and nothing else.

"I've always been trying to meet others expectations, worrying about what other people think," Whitson said. "I'm definitely in a situation that I'm going to fully embrace. Being under the radar is what I need."

Much appreciated, man. <doffs cap>

As reported earlier in his prospect thread, 4th-rounder Kevin McAvoy will also sign with the Sox. The better news is that he became a converted & reformed ex-Yankees fan even before the draft.

McAvoy anticipated being drafted, but was a little pleasantly surprised to go sooner than expected.

"They called like 15 picks before that and said they were thinking about taking me," McAvoy said. "I got excited but wasn't 100 percent sure. They made the pick, I thought, this is pretty crazy that I got to go to a New England team."

McAvoy said he will forgo his final season with Bryant and sign with the Red Sox. He said some Class A leagues start a week from Friday.

Of course, the selection did throw his baseball loyalties into some chaos. In Syracuse, McAvoy grew up a fan of the New York Yankees. Obviously, that's changing.

"Once I got to Bryant (in Rhode Island), I won't say I converted, but the Red Sox started to grow on me," McAvoy said. "It's tough. I switched over real quick."

35th rounder Ross Puskarich is leaning towards college, minimizing his draft selection like just another notch on the bedpost, but says he will entertain Boston's overtures.

Puskarich, who hit .459 with six home runs and 33 RBIs for the Patriots this year, found out that he had been drafted via Twitter.

"It's awesome," Puskarich said. "It opens up a lot of things. It looks nice on the resume for later years. And it helps me going into school, being young."

Puskarich is set to play for the University of San Francisco this upcoming year.

"I'm most likely going to school but I'm still going to hear out what the Red Sox have to say," he said.

8th-rounder Ben Moore says he will sign.

Ben Moore grew up an Alabama fan which led him to choose the Tide when it was time to pick a college.

Now that he's ready for a career, Moore's favorite baseball team chose him.

The Alabama outfielder was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the eighth round, pick No. 254 of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Moore will leave school a year early to play professional baseball.

"I just felt like it's the right thing to do if the right opportunity came," Moore told ABC 3340. "It presented itself and I feel at piece with it. I'm ready to go play and I'm just so happy the Red Sox believed in me and took a chance on me."

And as noted in his prospect thread, the Sox plan to bring him through the system as a catcher.

2nd-rounder Sam Travis says he will sign.

Sam Travis developed into one of the most productive hitters in college baseball at Indiana. Fenway Park, with the famed Green Monster in left field, is regarded as one of the most hitter-friendly professional ballparks.

Sounds like a match made in baseball heaven. At least that’s what Travis and the Boston Red Sox are hoping.

-----------

“I grew up watching baseball on TV and getting an opportunity to play in one of the most historic ballparks is really exciting,” said Travis, an Orland Park resident. “When my name got called, it was a surreal experience. I’m ready to go and start moving on with my baseball career.”

David Peterson would be a steal if singable.  He broke his leg right before the HS season.  Perennial top 50 ranking pre-injury. He had surgery, a plate and screws installed and was back on the mound in 5 weeks starting with fastballs in the low 90's up to the lower- mid 90s by the end of the season.  Most feel at 6'7",great athlete with excellent control there is more in the tank.  His arm is fresh and he has not been over-used like many of the southern and California players as he has pitched at altitude (CO) for the last 4 years. His offspeed stuff seems just above average at altitude but comes alive at lower elevations as with most good pitchers.

14th-rounder Jordan Procyshen is chomping at the bit to get started. Safe to say he's signing with the Sox.

Jordan Procyshen hastily answered the phone and politely asked if he could call back.

The Boston Red Sox were on the other line.

The 6-foot, 210-lb. catcher out of the Okotoks Dawgs program had just been selected by the defending World Series champions, and the organization was calling to check up on one of the many investments they made during the 2014 MLB draft.

“They were just trying to get some paperwork in order and get me signed as quick as possible so I can get started to play already,” Procyshen said after being drafted Saturday.

The phone call from the Red Sox front office was the culmination of a crazy day for the Ontario-born Procyshen, who relocated to south Calgary at a young age, before ending up in Okotoks as a high school senior and graduating from Holy Trinity Academy in 2011.

“It’s almost like I’m living a dream and it’s not even real,” said Procyshen, who recently completed his junior season at Northern Kentucky University. “I was playing golf this morning (in Okotoks) with my brother and two of his buddies, and that’s when I got the news from one of my friends. They called me and said, ‘You’re a Boston Red Sox.’ I was like, ‘What?’ ”

It wasn’t a practical joke.
“Going into the draft, honestly, I had no expectations,” Procyshen said. “I just wanted to get that opportunity to get my foot in the door into professional baseball and be able to prove myself — and if I’m good enough, I’m good enough. And if I’m not, I’m not.

“Honestly, the 14th round is an absolute honour, A) to get picked by anybody, and B) to get that picked that high, is unbelievable.”

---------------------------

Once Procyshen signs, he’s expected to be assigned to either the Red Sox’s rookie-ball affiliate, the Lowell Spinners, of the New York Penn League, or the low-A Greenville Drive, of the South Atlantic League.

He’s both excited and a bit anxious to start his minor-league journey.

“It’s going to be a grind in the minor leagues,” Procyshen said. “I even asked the Boston Red Sox scout because he played a little bit in the minors, and I asked him about the grind of the minor leagues — the late nights, the long bus trips, the bad hotels — and he told me, ‘It’s not easy, and it’s going to be tough. There’s going to be days where you have a night game in one area, and then you’re going to go on an eight-hour bus ride, arrive at 6 in the morning, get off the bus, not be able to check into your hotel and go straight to the park and play another game and not be able to sleep in a bed for probably 24 or 48 hours.’ ”
Known as a solid defensive catcher with some pop in his bat from the left side, the 21-year-old believes he wouldn’t be where he is today without the Dawgs program.

“What (Dawgs founding partner) John Ircandia has created here, which started in Calgary and has grown out here in Okotoks is amazing,” Procyshen said. “I honestly wouldn’t even be a collegiate player and didn’t even think I’d have a chance at being drafted when I joined the J Dawgs (Academy) when I was only 14 years old.

“I owe my entire career to the J Dawgs. They give you everything and more — facilities, coaches and life lessons.”

Michael Kopech, the hard-throwing right-hander whom the Red Sox selected with one of their two first-round picks (No. 33 overall), said by phone on Tuesday that he has reached an agreement to sign with theRed Sox and that he has informed the University of Arizona (which he’d accepted a scholarship to attend) of his decision. The agreement is not yet final, pending a physical, but Kopech is expected in Boston in the coming days to finalize his agreement. Kopech said that his agreement with the Sox was for “a little under” the slot recommendation of $1.678 million, meaning that the Red Sox will have some additional flexibility to spend on other draftees.

It helps that he's a Red Sox fan! Last year he said if he was drafted he'd forgo going to university, so I'm pretty sure he'll be an easy sign.

As a point of comparison for the Sox:

Jim Callis ‏@jimcallisMLB
Biggest post-10th-rd bonus I've seen so far: @Marlins 11th-rder Nick White, $350k. Okla HS RHP, to 94 & good CB when fresh. @MLBDraft

Then there's the other extreme:

keithlaw ‏@keithlaw
Good grief. Gareth Morgan [sandwich pick for Seattle, #74 overall] is a solid prospect but not $2MM (twice slot) good.

(Actually, slot for that pick was $760,300, so it's nearly three times the figure. Of course, the Mariners saved more than that overage by signing their 4th thru 10th rounders for $1,253,500 under slot.)

Then again, there is this from McAdam:

Sean McAdam@Sean_McAdam

Red Sox have essentially agreed to terms with @MichaelKopech5, the second of their two first-round picks. Money is around slot ($1.4 mil)

If this is true, that would represent a $278K savings, which is pretty huge.  I sense, however, the McAdam is just confused and thinks that $1.4M is slot, b/c in no way is $1.4M "around slot" of $1.68M.

34th rounder Kuehl McEachern has been pitching for the Leesburg Lightning of the Florida Summer Collegiate League.

But not anymore

Reliever Kuehl McEachern, who was drafted in the 34th round by the Boston Red Sox in Major League Baseball’s annual June Draft, has recorded two saves in as many opportunities.

McEachern has signed with the Red Sox and is no longer on the Lightning roster.

At the suggestion of another member, I've changed the color scheme in the chart. Since the orange was hard to read, I switched to blue for Juco players. Hopefully that remedies the issue.

If anyone else is having trouble differentiating any other chart colors, please drop me a PM and I'll see what I can do.

And just to clarify, ALL players who are confirmed or reported signings will be in red (either bold or italics) regardless of whether they were drafted out of HS, College, or Juco.

For some of these high school draftees, like 29th rounder Josh Pennington, how easily we forget that these high school kids are... still kids.

Crazy to think today was the last day of classes.  Where did the time go

He also got written up on his final day for the petty offense of "chewing tobacco in class," which he tweeted with mock pride:

Clearly he's going to need a lesson in social media refraining once he joins this club:

Like I've been doing this for 2 years it's the last day and your gonna screw me over

The longer is goes, the more overslot it's going to be. I don't expect a huge overslot deal, but somewhat. I'd guess within the next few days.

As many of us suspected, 28th rounder David Peterson will not be walking through that door. This from the Medford (OR) Rogues of the wood bat West Coast Baseball League (hat tip to Adam Fox over at Sox Prospects for the link):

The Rogues had three new players on the field for them today with LHP David Peterson, OF Christian Cox and catcher Tanner Lubach all making their Rogues debuts in front of 846 enthusiastic fans.  Peterson (0-1), who decided to forego being drafted by the Boston Red Sox in order to attend the University of Oregon in the fall, pitched five innings for the Rogues.  He ended the night with four hits, one run, three batters walked, and one strike out.

20th-rounder Devon Fisher says he will sign with the Sox, but has one more item on his to-do list (another hat tip to AmFox1 at SP):

Fisher had already committed to play his college baseball at UVa, but said he will forgo college to begin his professional career. “I viewed UVa as a security net for me in case something happened to me I would have three years of college to get ready and prepare and move on,” added Fisher.

Fisher will report to rookie camp in two weeks, but has some unfinished business to attend to as his Bruins are playing for a state championship this weekend. “I’ve got to leave pretty soon, so hopefully we do well and win a ring and then I will be on my way,” said Fisher.

Loved reading this:

Western Branch head coach Roland Wright says Fisher is a true leader that controls the defense for the Bruins. “He has called all of our pitches this year which is a first for me since 2010 and he called what I would have called most of the time. He does a great job handling our pitcher and adds a new dimension to our defense because most teams will not run on us.

21st rounder Ian Rice has reported to the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League, where the season began last yesterday. He went 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter and finished out the game behind the plate against Hyannis. As for joining the Sox, this from the Jackson County Floridian:

Chipola College and veteran coach Jeff Johnson were well represented in this year’s 2014 Major League Baseball amateur player draft, with six players getting the call of a lifetime.

Already boarded on a plane and reported to the Single A Short season for the Boston Red Sox is outfielder Danny Mars. Mars was the Panhandle Player of the Year and had an outstanding season as an Indian.

Catcher Ian Rice and pitcher Tucker Simpson were both taken in this year’s draft, but have not yet signed. Both are playing baseball this summer in the Cape and will make their decisions to return to school or sign and turn pro following their summer season.
