My post was about tendencies. The pats usually draft players with exceptional verticals and good agility drills.

But I do think your post is shit. Athleticism matters.

Sorry, didn't mean to come across as attacking you. I was more railing against the irrelevant and superfluous nature of the combine.

Yes, athleticism matters. There are infinite means of measuring it. Tests should be designed commensurate with the specific skill sets demanded by specific positions and roles. Vertical leap doesn't mean jack shit for an OL.

It measures leg strength and exlposion. An O linemen is noting without a strong base. It's imperfect, yes.

The vertical does measure explosiveness in the hips and lower body. Good for initial punch off the snap. Same with the broad jump

Yeah.

I wonder if the Pats feel like they're going to be able to get players as UDFAs at some positions. Guys who might be good fits are Zurlon Tipton (RB, Central Michigan), Eric Pinkins (S, SDSU), and Gator Hoskins (TE/FB, Marshall), none of whom was a Combine invite. Jeremy Gallon (WR, Michigan), Garrett Scott (OL, Marshall), and Nic Jacobs (TE, McNeese State) are other guys who might go undrafted.

Garrett Scott has sick measurables for an OL. Jeremy Gallon is a good option. He is very talented for a smurf.

Vertical and broad jump ability correlates with power through the hips. Almost every good OL has a VJ over 26" and BJ over 100". Drafting 'outliers" usually isn't a key to successful personnel acquisition.

SMU has a sad. Loved Abbrederis IIRC

Yeah but he has a good home now. Abbrederis was such a good route runner and tactician - he wasn't the fastest guy but he did all the little things right - and some of those little things like great route running aren't really so "little". Million dollar head ten cent body.

He would never be a #1 guy. He'd be your ultra dependable (if you need 10 yards he'd get you 11) #2 or 3 guy. Fan favorite type.

Lots of douchebags on hand to watch the draft (namely the guys in the Broncos suits).

Kinda really hoping for the Pats to pick up a real thumping LB that can rush the QB if there are any left.

Tennessee just traded in front of the Patriots to draft Mettenberger.

Edit- maybe they were worried HOU or MIN would take him?

6th round pick. Just like TB. Very high on Mettenberger. No, that's not comparing the two ;).

So, the people who were complaining about Verticals will be pissed.
Worst vertical of any guard at the combine.

“@NEPD_Loyko: Jon Halapio was the first player I interviewed at the Senior Bowl.. Tough SOB, played with a torn Pectoral for much of season”

He read your posts about Wendell being a little boy and he was inspired.

I had Halapio in the "pick 20" thread, so that's something.

Another slow guy -- worst 3-cone of the entire combine I think. But strong and tough (played last year with a torn pectoral) and a god run blocker. Will open up all kinds of holes for James Freaking White

So not 1, not 2, but 3 large guys with bad verticals? Is this happening? I feel like everything I knew about offensive line prospects and how the Pats evaluate them is... well it needs a damn addendum now.

Mankins and Connolly are both near the end of the line, and they utterly lack depth, unless you think Cannon will ever make it at guard.
They are towards the middle actually.

Hey, way to go Ken. Now make sure you play dem special teams right good.

Surprised he got drafted. Good for him. 1st SMU player off the board - at 180. Yeah... was a shitty year(s).
