No I guess you guys have a point. I mean if the scouting reports say something then that has to be right. Because scouting reports are infallible.
Of course not. Stop being a jackass.

Mark Appel, 2013 No. 1 overall, at High-A Lancaster (remember that launching pad?): 2-5, 9.74 ERA, 1.92 WHIP... Promoted to Double-A. Say what you want about Appel's future potential, that just got him promoted.

From my memories of the likes of Bard at Lancaster I would want him the hell out of there too. It seems to be a great place to break pitchers

Justin Masterson handled it really well, if memory serves.

Exception, proving rule. Thread topic left in the dust...

The important thing to remember is that the point of the minor leagues is not to make every player better.  It is to force attrition, let the cream come to the top, and then refine that cream.  I'll stop torturing the analogy, but what this means is that promotions can be done for many reasons.  It is completely foolish to think that tangible performance isn't one of them.  I have heard the "you need to perform X,Y,Z" as the reason given players with good performance who are wondering why they haven't been promoted yet.  But I can understand that it would work both ways.  Anyway, on top of tangible performance and development goals, there are other considerations for promoting players, including their age and experience, roster needs and gaps throughout the organization (e.g. you can't have 4 2B in Portland), and once in a while, even throwing a bone to the minor league club owners.

I don't know why the Astros promoted Appel, but it's worth noting that they also gave him a bullpen session with the major league club, and some Astros players were a little annoyed that he got the promotion despite his performance.  Now, I know those guys are not a high A scout that talked to you, but probably they have earned their way through the minors and understand what typically earns promotions.  Or, maybe they are all just whiny babies.  I don't know, but it certainly points to Appel's promotion being an exception, not the confirming rule that you seem to think it is.

Really? Less than 100 innings into his career, huh? Because I had a Cal League scout tell me otherwise. What have you heard?
So this is the part of the thread where you pretend how important you are and how no one else should post because they aren't an "insider" or "writing for ba" or whatever the fuck your other excuses are.

I'll just say this, there were about half a dozen tweets/articles from other super duper important insiders calling for an Appel promotion, and not a single one of them had anything to do with him meeting goals.

Can a mod please split (or lock) this thread? Because people who come here looking for "2013 draft early returns" are going to be treated instead to a page and a half of "internet guys posturing in a virtual dick measuring contest".

Missed while we were diverting our attention to the aforementioned "contest" is Longhi and his season ending injury.  If one of the many M.D.s on the board could share their thoughts on the potential impact of the injury on Nick going forward, I would greatly appreciate it.  I don't know much (or anything) about anatomy and kinesthesiology  , but how could the UCL damage affect his grip/swing/follow through.

I was enjoying the minor league game threads and reading his box score every morning.  I don't have  2013 binky anymore (well this season).

That is horrible news and ends his season.  I blame myself.

Long-term however assuming a successful surgery he should probably be OK and not experience much delay.

Here's a primer from Baseball Prospectus on thumb injuries.

Cool thank you for the link - it makes me feel a little better:

Summary
Tears of the UCL dramatically impact baseball performance because of the game’s gripping and grasping requirements. Minor to moderate sprains heal well with relative rest and immobilization, but there are times when surgery is needed. If the player ends up on the operating room table, he’ll be out for at least three months. Fortunately, the long-term prognosis for surgery is excellent, and while the player may experience some periods of stiffness and soreness, he’ll still be able to mimic the Fonz. Ayyyy.
