TJ Warren is ACC POY.  I think he deserved it.

And UNC deserves to be made fun of the NIT 3rd place banner even though they did take it down.

Agreed on Warren. Parker's first 6 or so ACC games probably cost him the award.

Duke certainly may win the ACC Tournament - Mike's teams have traditionally done very well in it and he loves to win it, but Duke has been pretty Jekyll/Hyde between Cameron and road/neutral sites this year.

:rolling:

I assume this refers to Roy's failure in the tournament leading to his self rationalization that he doesn't care about it and is more concerned about the NCAA tournament.

no it's just a statement of fact.  I believe Mike has said any time you can raise a banner it's worth winning.

Did he coach at UNC in '73?

My parents have been living down in Durham all winter for the first time, so they're going to be at the tournament this weekend. Never been to one of those, but I'm guessing it's a pretty cool experience.

Devils 81-Heels 72 in the final. UNC's score may be rounded up by easy grading.

wait that's the requirement?

i mean, i know UNC's standards for hanging stuff are a bit lower...

I will say that if the banner read "NIT Final Four, 1973" it would probably take on a different meaning. Third place sounds cheesy, but lets not pretend that we are old enough to understand the NIT before the NCAA expanded the field to go beyond conference winners. At one time it was the preferred postseason tourney, not sure when that flipped, I'm guessing it was pre-1973,

Pre-1975 when the NCAA had a one team per conference rule for the Tournament, the NIT was very prestigious...not anywhere close to what the NIT is today.  The UNC team that was "3rd Place" was 25-8 for example.

The NIT ('70-'71 season) also featured the only Duke-UNC post-ACC tournament matchup in the semi-finals (UNC won 73-69 and won the tournament over Georgia Tech).

Yeah I know. Back in the day, the NIT was actually the bigger tournament. But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy tweaking Carolina fans any way possible. This is what I get with my dad going to Duke and his sister and her son going to UNC, and her husband going to Duke. We have interesting holidays.

How old are your dad and aunt? To most UNC fans from back then, NC State was the most hated rival and those were the two schools that divided families. My mom still hasn't forgiven her brother for going to State. Whereas Duke was just another ACC team (aside from sporadic incidents like the Heyman-Brown fight), and to this day she can only muster a tepid distaste for them compared to her hatred of the Wolfpack.

My cousins-her nieces and nephews-are quite the opposite, of course.

I had no desire to play Pitt again in the first place but today was pretty much worst case scenario.  They got basically a scrimmage, all their good players had fantastic games, and they got plenty of rest.  UNC better come out all guns blazing tomorrow or they'll be one-and-done.

They're both in their 60s, so their view of the rivalry is mostly in the past 35 years or so when it's become more Duke/UNC.

Pitt is most definitely beating UNC today.

Pitt beating Carolina would be out of character for them given their lack of victories over ranked teams this season, but neither result (Carolina winning/losing) would surprise me.

Well Carolina winning in the ACC tourney (under Roy) would be out of character for them ;)

I have a tangentially related question a friend asked me regarding ACC basketball scheduling. As I understand, under the new conference rules, only certain teams (e.g., Duke and UNC) are guaranteed to play a home and home each season. For ACC teams that are not guaranteed this annual home and home (e.g., UNC and NC State, I believe), is it possible to schedule a non-conference game at a neutral site? Scheduling early season "non-conference" games against conference opponents is common practice in college hockey, but I have no clue about basketball. Are there scheduling restrictions like this? Anyone know where I can find details?

Kids fought hard, like they usually do.  Still have trouble seeing them win a game in the big one, all the same bugaboos are there that can trip them up like they did today.

Especially troubling is the total annihilation on the boards the last two games; UNC had been the best rebounding team in the league up til now.

I believe it's allowed.  UNC and NC State are doing that in baseball this year (nonconference neutral site games).

NC State and UNC are guaranteed to play every year in basketball, though: each team has 2 rivals that they're guaranteed to play each year.

Boston College: Notre Dame, Syracuse
Clemson: Florida State, Georgia Tech
Duke: North Carolina, Wake Forest
Florida State: Clemson, Miami
Georgia Tech: Clemson, Notre Dame
Louisville: Pittsburgh, Virginia
Miami: Florida State, Virginia Tech
North Carolina: Duke, North Carolina State
North Carolina State: North Carolina, Wake Forest

Pittsburgh: Louisville, Syracuse
Syracuse: Boston College, Pittsburgh
Virginia: Louisville, Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech: Miami, Virginia
Wake Forest: Duke, North Carolina State

That is a tough draw for Pitt every year.

Thanks for the info. I must have found a poor source via google. Whatever I read seemed to indicate that there was only one rival in the new system and UNC and Duke were paired. This article/blog was outrated that UNC-NC State weren't guaranteed a home and home.

They originally scheduled the 2013-2014 season that way (just one rival), but changed it when Notre Dame made its ACC basketball commitment.

Duke gets Clemson coming off OT and then LOLNCState before they get to play a team they beat already in Virginia or a team they disemboweled in Pitt.  You can start engraving the trophy.

I thought initially they blew the call but Thornton just stripped the ball from Hood.  Good play.

Nah I'm not mad, my team's still in it for now. Just would like to see some consistency. Hood runs down the court as warp speed, initiates contact and immediately goes down like he's been shot. The no call at the end was fine even though Thorton hooked the guard as he passed, but if you're going to give Hood that call, I don't know why you swallow the whistle there.

Wish we saw a replay of the Hood play. Don't recall ESPN ever showing it. I have no idea if he was fouled or not. I was shocked we got a call there.

Did feel like no call was correct on the last play based on the multiple replays. But if I was a Clemson (or non-Duke) fan I might feel otherwise. Kind of like the Hood dunk at the end of the first Cuse game.

The Hood call was a good one, too. McDaniels put his hip into him and Hood went down (like everybody would).

Yeah I finally saw the Hood replay so I have to walk back that one. It's one of those situations where it looked different in real time than on the replays.

NCSU gets a little momentum cutting it to ten and their idiot coach takes it all away by calling an unnecessary timeout.

Fantastic job by Duke all day on TJ Warren.  Guy couldn't be stopped for several games in a row, but they did it.  Now they win tomorrow and get a #1 seed.

and thank you for sending the Wolfpack to the NIT where they belong

I'm about to pay attention to a UVa basketball game for the first time in about 20 years. I think that was around the last time they were in an ACC final.

Congrats to UVA. Very deserving double champion. They earned the last one seed IMO.

If Michigan wins, they will have beaten 11 top 50 teams to UVA's 5, and four of Michigan's 7 losses were to RPI top 10 teams.

UVA played 3 out-of-conference top 50 teams and lost all three by an average of 13 points.

If Michigan wins, it's theirs.

Boy Virginia really proved to be the best team in the ACC, didn't they?  Just an impressive performance all season long, capped by a brilliant tournament.  Well done, Cavaliers.
