So I was really bored this weekend and went back and read through our RealFantasy draft from 5.5 years ago for shits and giggles. Wow, a lot has changed since then. 3 observations:

  1. Pxer, who was roundly mocked for his drafting strategy, would have a MONSTER team right now. Just absurd.
  2. The league has changed so so much since then. Man we drafted some brutal players as a group.
  3. People were really really whiny and sensitive.

Also, Bergeron and Lucic are both out for tonight. Lovely. Need to recall a forward (Fraser on emergency recall?) to fill out the lineup.

If Fraser clears he can stay. Once he clears they would have a 30 day window to assign him to Providence without needing waivers. If he's claimed they'll have to call someone up.

Also kenney taking Mike Green like 7th overall in that Real Fantast draft is the worst pick in hindsight that I've come across so far. Phaneuf shorty after was bad. Yikes.

Holy shit that RealFantasy draft... I think I'd have the worst team in the league, despite going Crosby/Rinne rounds 1/2

Brenden Morrow - Sidney Crosby - Chris Stewart
Nikita Filatov - Tomas Kopecky - Steve Sullivan
Oscar Möller - Rich Peverley - Matt Pettinger
Christoph Schubert - Brendan Morrison - Nigel Dawes

Karl Alzner - Zach Bogosian
Kris Russell - Sami Salo
Fedor Tyutin - Sergei Zubov

Pekka Rinne

I'd like a do-over.

I'm guessing Marchand and Smith skate with 46 but curious to see how it shakes out tonight.

This is Claude we're talking about. Those guys will be skating with Kelly.

Yawn. They were skating with Krejci at practice.

You haven't watched many games this year, have you?

The full lines from the skate were:

63 - 46 - 18
23 - 34 - 21
52* - 11 - 38
20 - 61 - 53

* Lindblad appears to be the call up so I inserted him in Fraser's spot.

Looks like a mid-September preseason game. Sigh.

Paille - Cunningham - Griffith would absolutely be my 3rd line there, and it's not even close.

Man it makes me sad that I can type that for a December divisional game.

I've watched them all thank you. I didn't get to see the morning skate lines yet. I was making an assumption based on a few years of watching this guy coach.

Between here and everywhere.
And it's also not uncommon for Claude to try interesting line combinations in the morning skate, but going with more traditional lines come game time.

You mean the guy who put an 18 year old rookie on the first line in his 2nd or 3rd game? Or has been mixing and matching all sorts of combinations to try to get things right all across the lineup? Or the guy who has kept Kelly on the 3rd line all year despite him being one of their most effective skaters this year (a move which I agree with but goes against your characterization)? He hasn't done much except keep his 4th line center in the lineup a little too long (but not overplaying him).

Claude really can't be faulted for much this year, if anything. I blame the players, then Chiarelli, then Claude...in that order.

For tonight...there are no traditional line options, unfortunately.

I hate everything about this season so far, so fucking frustrating.

The thing that's a little worrisome is that if they don't make the playoffs I could see a possibility of Julien being the fall guy so that Chiarelli can have an excuse to try and save his own ass. But that's still a ways off and this team isn't out of it yet.

I don't think Chiarelli has that sole power. I have a hunch anything like that has to run through Neely.

And it would be incredibly short-sighted and typical of many other NHL teams to fire the 1st or 2nd most successful coach in franchise history after 3 bad months with a depleted roster the season after winning the President's Trophy.

They're only a few points out of a playoff spot. This is frustrating, and they're not going to win the division this year, but get into the playoffs and anything can happen. It's not even January yet.

They just extended Julien. He's not going anywhere.

I also agree with TFP. The players and Chiarelli are more at fault this year than Julien is.

Nobody should be fired either this year or next. Chiarelli has earned the right to be allowed to rebuild this team given the success that he's lead them to since he's been on the job. If they are in the same or worse situation in '16-'17 then it'll be time for Cam to make a decision on the GM, until then let's see what they come up with. That doesn't mean that we can't critique individual moves as they happen.

While I agree with this in theory, Chiarelli also built most of this team and put himself in the position he is in cap wise. I think pretty much all of us would have put all our chips in last year so I don't fault him completely, but he's still hamstrung by his own decisions outside of just what he did for last year. He's paying good money for guys who just aren't producing and I am assuming all the NM clauses he handed out don't help with trades.

People in Montreal be crazy.

A buddy of mine lives in Montreal - and said talk radio is speculating about a Bergeron+Lucic for Berglund + deal, saying that's the reason that Bergy and Lucic are sitting tonight.

If Lucic got traded to Montreal, I think the entire NHL would explode.

I would lose my shit if they trade Bergeron.  I could care less if Lucic goes... when he is off his game he is totally invisible, but Bergeron is one of a handful of players on the team who not only excel at their own game but make the players who play with them better, too.

Plus, I just bought his jersey last spring.

Yeah my thought was a complete non-sequitur. I just saw Lucic, Montreal, and Trade in the same sentence and that hypothetical popped into my head. It was completely unrelated to Berglund.

Wow this anthem singer is brutal. Thank God the British didn't keep Detroit in the War of 1812. We'd have to hear two anthems out of her.

Marchand won't get an assist but that was a great job getting in front of Howard with Quincey draped all over him.

I've come to the conclusion that i will never understand hybrid icing.  I thought the Detroit players was clearly ahead of the defenseman on that last one.

IIRC, the rule is interpreted at the moment they cross the hashmarks in the defensive zone. In this situation, Bartkowski had gotten ahead of the Detroit player just prior to that point, thus the icing call.

2 things I wish about scoring:
As many assists as needed to reward all players that possessed the puck in the fluid possession that resulted in the goal.
Some way to track stats like that for Marchand. I'd like to know who the league leader is in Effective Screens.

Brad Marchand is having one of his best games of the season. I know he's had a couple 2 goal games so far this season, but this game he's been really solid on his skates and he's been an absolute pest to Howard and in the neutral zone.
