I can't believe how sad I am today that the season is over and Papi is done. Wow.

Same here. This is hitting me much harder than I thought. I feel like I just got dumped after a long, intense relationship.

I can't go that far (extreme sports pessimist) because of what Russell, Bird and a dozen other great Celtics did for us; what Orr and the Bruins did and what Brady/Belichick did and are continuing to do. But when it comes to the Red Sox, yes, after 2003, I figured I could be another Red Sox casualty (get planted in the ground without seeing a single World Series title). David Ortiz certainly changed that, and three times over. Thanks, Big Man.

Sure. But performance over 3 games or a couple of weeks is exactly the thing that we tend to over-ascribe "clutch" and "choking" and things like that to, if those 3 games or couple of weeks happen to fall in the postseason. Three pitchers had bad starts. When that happens during the season, it's written off as a rough patch and maybe even hidden entirely if the offense goes nuts in the middle game. If it happens in the postseason, there's not necessarily a reason for it.

The reality's really that the pitching isn't as good as it looked during the clinching hot streak and isn't as bad as it looked afterward, but there's no real cause for the fluctuation between the two.

Gammons evaluates what happened. (Soon to be followed by snarky putdowns of Gammons by Internet weenies who will never have half his talent.)

This team went from hot to cold so fast, and stayed hot or stayed cold. I mean, they just broke the Orioles, and they broke the Yankees, and they won a big series in Toronto, then bam - face plant and swept. I wonder if it is because they are so young.

Ah well, we will see how they play next year. I'm looking forward to it.

Agreed, did not think this team would be swept but they stayed cold.
Some warning signs were there. Even though they were a great offensive team they were wonky- they actually had problems when the bases were loaded; they would go through streaks of RISP droughts; Leon, JBJ and X ran out of gas. Once Porcello got knocked out they didn't have another starter who could step up. Frustrating way to end Papi's run.

I thought this was interesting, from the NYTimes:

It's taken me a few days to be able to read anything about the series.

Yeah. The whole series probably turned on game two. On paper, one of Price and Porcello should have led to a win, but cold is cold, and when they were losing this year, so much hung on the pitchers, because they just couldn't buy a run. Still, it's really strange how the wheels just fell off.

And the wheels really did just fall off. I just looked at the game log from that night in New York: Kimbrel gave up a single then walked three guys, then Kelly: two quick outs and then, well ... shit. They'd just been breaking spirits like twigs, and it all evaporated. I guess it's going to be a longer winter than I thought. Kimbrel and Price, that should be like bedrock, but it's so shaky. There's Price in April - missing glove side, missing glove side, missing glove side, then bringing the meatball, and Kimbrel putting a heater in the netting and bouncing three curves. Stop before you tell me they had good years because that's the scary part, they did have good years, but not good years like "I'm going to take the trash out and I might miss a Red Sox at bat because the inning's going to be so short," but good years like "I'm going to take the trash out and where'd those runs come from, and jeez, there's only one out."

So yeah, that's the foundation for next year. That and Mookie, X, JBJ all a year more seasoned but still young, Pedroia. That and Panda? Benintendi starting to really rake, and maybe a dash of Moncada. That and Porcello, Rodriguez, a rejubilated Kelly. It's kind of a loaded team, and also a crap shoot.

Have a good winter, all you game threaders. It sure was a fun summer, thanks. Next spring, when I've learned Spanish and guitar, studied modern European History, and painted my masterpiece, I'll be back for some baseball.

I would argue that the whole series might have been totally different if Holt came up with a more creative slide and been safe at home in Game 1, Inning 1. In a short series, it really doesn't take much

I agree. That top of the 1st started so promising, like here we go! But alas.....there we went.

It ended poorly, but what a fun team to watch this year. When they were on, they were ON! That 4 game sweep of the Yankees was great and I was lucky enough to be at one of those games. You can't win the World Series every year. We as Sox fans should know that. Enjoy the ride. It's baseball and looking forward to pitchers and catchers.
