That's the one they needed in Fenway, there is a chance that was the last game in Fenway this season.

    Good job Terry!!

Funny how all the question marks of early September are turning into exclamation points. Peaking at the right time.

He's scary but everyone else has had ups and downs also. Would you really feel more comfortable with Robertson or Britton in the 9th? I wouldn't.

Series is now a best 2 of 3 with home field advantage to the yanks.

Since this round started, the Cubs lost the wild card game at home.

Welp, now that I'm sober I'm feeling pretty good about this series. We had a jillion chances to win game 1 and we won game 2.

We need Severino dealing and then we are in business.

Yep. Let's not get too cocky but everything (except Stanton) is a green light right now for a prolonged postseason run.

This should be fun back home.

Even Stanton crushed one two games ago (down the line in the wild card game), he could do that again any time.

Mostly game thread jitters for me but to be honest, yes I would have felt better with Britton (had he not already pitched). He has just had such bad luck against Boston that I really believe they have him figured out.

Yanks need to win the next two or face a bad ending in Game 5. End this thing in NY.

That's why it was actually kind of an ideal situation for him, the #5 hitter was up first, 4 run lead and a proven closer in Robertson ready behind him if needed.

I hope you're right. He seems like a pretty confident guy and may be impervious to nerves or feeling jinxed by a team but I have to believe they were at least a little bit in his head. If he regained full confidence (again assuming he had lost some) then it is a huge positive.

Insane Judge factoid of the day:

Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy and Anthony Rendon each hit the ball over 109 MPH twice this season.

Aaron Judge did it three times in the first five innings tonight.

Yankee fans only need to go back 20 years to recall the challenge that faces the Red Sox. After winning 114 games in the regular season, NY fell behind 2-1 in the Cleveland series before waking up. The Red Sox did not win 108 games by mistake. They will be ready to play hard on Monday night. Rick Porcello has to do what El Duque did 20 years ago. Shut down a potent offense.
There is no truer test of a championship team than winning on the road, in a hostile environment. The Yankees just showed they can win on the road. Now it's up to Boston to respond.

Hoping Cora starts Eovaldi in game 3. He's been great of late vs Yanks.

I love this, because the truth is that Yankee fans don't care and that deep down, it makes you kind of like him. Which you should anyway, he's perfect.

I also avoid A-Rod whenever possible, but I read here that the two of them bet and the loser of the series has to wear the other's uniform. Talk about a lose/lose for Boston fans, as if anyone wants to see A-Rod in their uniform including Yankee fans.

Yeah, I would have started him in game 2 and Porcello in game 3 and I guess Rodriguez in game 4, which isn't second guessing, I posted that here a few weeks back. I get why it's very hard to skip Price against NY (pricy contract still with years to go, you don't want to so obviously dodge the main rival even if he did do it early in the season) but it is so clearly a terrible matchup for him.

Any chance Boston brings Sale back on short rest for Game 4? He promised to do whatever Cora needs, even throwing 150 pitches.
If Boston loses Game 3, do you throw anything less than your best in Game 4?

Cora chooses Eovaldi for Game 3 and Porcello for Game 4. Vs. Severino and Sabathia, I guess.
Starting pitchers don't matter anymore. Five innings is like a complete game in this era. Yanks' biggest advantage over Boston is in the bridge to their closer.
Seems like we spent all summer bitching about defensive flaws in the Yankees, inconsistent starting pitching, etc. In October, we are looking at a Boston team that won 108 games despite a nondescript bullpen that actually performed fairly well during the regular season.

Eovaldi/Porcello definitely the way to go, especially after Cora watched Kelly shut down NY with high velocity for a few innings yesterday. I am glad Cora didn't take my advice to skip Price entirely, I would have gone Eovaldi/Porcello in games 2/3 although I do understand how that might be difficult in the real world as opposed to on paper.

It's such a unique situation with Price. Red Sox owners, Dombroski invested deeply in the guy. Price had a very good regular season in 2018, outside of his problems with the Yankees. Price's playoff track record reminds me of A-Rod and how Joe Torre dropped his most highly paid player to 8th in the batting order against Detroit in 2006.
Now that Boston's rotation is set, the only path for Price is through the bullpen gates.

I know about his career postseason record, but I really think Price's issues are Yankee-specific. His two starts against HOU this year were quite good, last year in the ALDS he did very well against HOU out of the bullpen. I think that if BOS advances, Price will be relatively fine going forward.

My gut feeling is that Sale goes in 4 if the Sox lose 3.

Interesting. We have similar gut feelings. You gotta go with your ace if facing elimination. Porcello could fall back to Game 5.

Tanaka is just the opposite. 1.50 ERA in 30 playoff innings. He thrives in playoffs, struggles in September.

I guess you have to give him the shot, with a very short lead. Honestly, even though he gave up 3 in 2 innings, I don't think that's a back breaker at that time ... Both teams know damn well that normally 3 runs won't win you anything

And then Porcello in game 5? Obviously everyone would be available, but Porcello's road ERA is almost a run lower. And how many pitches do you think Sale would be good for on short rest? I think it will be Porcello either way, but I guess we'll see soon enough.

    Edit: fixed dumbness.

Cora should have used an opener and brought Price in to face the bottom of the order. Maybe he could have built up some momentum and confidence by getting a few quick outs and managed to get through one more turn of the lineup. Only really good pitchers should be given true starts, especially in the playoffs.

His road ERA is actually almost a run lower.
His BAA is better at home, but he's given up a bunch of gopher balls at Fenway.

Whoops, that's what I meant, too much multi-tasking, but that's a reason to keep him in game 4 and Sale on full rest in game 5. If Sale was 100%, I could see more of an argument for moving him up, but my impression is he is maybe at 85 or 90 percent of his peak self.

What about the Yankees plan for Game 4 if they’re down 2-1? Happ only threw 44 pitches. They could bring him back on short rest instead of going with CC.

They could but I'm not sure there's any reason to think he'd be a better option, especially given their respective rest. Also CC is ideally suited to the 4-5 inning role NY currently is using for most of their SPs, he had a very good postseason last year and had a ton of success against BOS in 2017 (not so much this year).

And here it is, the wave of the future. It does make sense. But most teams are not there yet. Boston lacks the kind of shut-down one-inning opener you are talking about. Who would have opened for Price? Joe Kelly, in retrospect, but could he handle the new role?

"Pretty locked in" is double talk for not really sure. If Boston wins Game 3, you want to trust CC with season on line?

I think they go Happ in game 4 if Boston wins game 3 and then Tanaka in 5 in Boston on four days rest

If the alternative is Happ on 3 days rest who looked very shaky in game 1? CC gets my vote, but my vote doesn't matter.

If it goes 5 I think Sale, Eovaldi, Brasier and Kimbrel are the only pitchers you would see barring extra innings
