Let's just be honest about that up front.

The odds today don't look great. But the fact is, if the Yankees are going to win the World Series they are going to have to beat a few pitchers of his ilk. And they will do so today.

I'll be at work for most of the game, so hopefully CC brightens my Friday.

Just have to remind everyone that a baseball playoff series can change in a heartbeat. How many times have we seen a team go up 2-0 in a series, or more, and lose? Game 2 promises more of what we saw last night but then the series switches to NY, where the Yankees play better. Maybe not good enough to beat a team like Cleveland, but just winning one game in this series would be a building block for the future. Two, even better. I have no expectation of the Yankees actually ousting Cleveland. What the Indians have done over the last two months is really impressive. They look like the 1998 Yankees.

6 times in 88 series since the LDS became a thing in 1995.

Interesting. The 0-2 thing first happened in the 1955 WS when the Yankees went up 2-0 and Brooklyn prevailed in 7. Same thing happened in 1956 except roles were reversed.

No mention of CC Sabathia in this thread yet, lot of pressure on him today to keep NY close to CLE.

NY had one of those six 0-2 comebacks in 2001 against the A's, they even lost the first two at home and came back. Game 3 was the memorable Jeter flip from the first base line to get Jeremy Giambi at home play (thanks again for not sliding, dude), that A's team won 102 games also.

This team won't be down 0-2 for another 8-9 hours, though.

Assuming the forecasts are correct (cloudy and showers), looks like we will get this one in and the start is at 5 pm so there's going to be no evening shadow issues, the lights will probably be on from the start

I would say this could be CC's last harrah except it looks like Yanks want him back at a reduced salary. What would the big guy accept? Any other takers?

That's a good question. I'd like to see him back, but have no idea what a projected contract would look like.

It's not totally dependent on him, NY has three spots filled (Severino, Gray, Montgomery), Tanaka can opt out (in which case I think they will let him leave) but he can also stay in which case four spots will be filled, and also there is the slim possibility of Otani. NY also has a bunch of guys pushing from below, five guys who ended the year at AA or AAA and could be ready for a rotation shot in 2018 sometime (German, Adams, Sheffield, Acevedo, Tate).

It's going to be an interesting offseason and I will be happy to jump into that future thread fully, but we're not there yet.

Completely different down 2-0 in 5 game series than a 7 game. That's why I only pulled LDS numbers.

Interesting and a little bittersweet seeing CC come back to Cleveland for the playoffs as a Yankee. I watched him as a rookie. I watched him get a sudden awakening and grow up very very quickly when he was robbed at gunpoint his second season. While I hope my team pastes him, I can't harbor any grudge toward the guy, from all I've read he's always been and still remains a genuinely decent human.

True and appreciate the difference. Also appreciate you didn't identify the first team to blow a 2-0 lead in the LDS!

He spent 10+ years in the Cleveland organization and now has spent 9 as a Yankee, huge start for him today.

Agreed. I now live out by where he grew up (Vallejo California). He's proven to be pretty damn resilient, open about his problems, and so far has beaten his demons. He is a worthy adversary.

He was 21 years old, enjoying his second season, staying up late and enjoying the party scene. Robbed at gunpoint leaving a hotel party. Next thing you know his mom comes to live with him at least for a while and I believe he became more of a homebody and never put a foot wrong since. He grew up and chose his path, a lot of young stud athletes make bad choices at that stage, he got scared straight.

edit: glasspusher, remember all the grumpy old bastard fans and writers complaining about how disrespectful it was that CC wore his cap crooked? It was an endless theme in print and sportstalk back then, that they were babying him and he was disrespecting the game with his crooked cap.

edit: jon abbey, he spent longer with the Tribe but has won a title with the Yankees, so he considers himself a Yankee I think I saw him quoted to say.

Pouring in Cleveland currently, but they expect it to clear up by gametime as of now.

    Funny line from Joel Sherman:

"To avoid going down 0-2 in this best-of-five, the Yankees will have to succeed against Kluber in Game 2. It is possible. But so, in theory, is climbing Everest in a Speedo. It just isn’t all that likely."

Let's see if we can steal this game fellas. Crossing my fingers that we at least make this an interesting series but we really looked overmatched last night. Umps didn't help but no excuses when you muster 3 hits.

Judge is in famine mode right now after 4 Ks last night. This is the 2017 Yankee offense. Feast or famine.

I just want a run. And a Judge homer. That will make the sweep more palpable for me.

He made a couple of questionable swings but Judge takes so many pitches and when he gets squeezed by an umpire, it makes it even worse. There were at least a couple of calls that I think really should have gone the other way against him. Again, no excuses because a hitter needs to adjust to the umpire too.

He took one fastball right down the middle last night. Seemed like he was chasing and guessing, bad combo. Same problem exists tonight.

Houston breaks it open in sixth, up 8-1.

Hopefully they make this a longer inning before he can settle in. 21 pitch inning is a cherry on top right now.

Only one swing and miss in first 4 hitters. Two. Didi just fanned. Lot of pitches so far, 23 to get 2 outs.

Miller and Allen pitched quite a bit last night for a game that CLE had locked up. Tito may regret that later today.

Could have been worse for the Indians after that error but all those extra pitches will make a difference. My wife is from Cleveland, and I'm a Sox fan, so I'm rooting for the Indians but I hope it's ok if I pop into this thread now and then. I won't be a jerk.
