A couple of days ago, I didn't think I would be posting this game thread, but then the 8th and 9th innings happened, and here we are. Beating another first place team shouldn't be a problem. Let's go get them David Price and company.

Cora is Houston's greatest loss since their football team went to Tennessee.

the Astros now have the same record as the Yankees, and obviously trending up while the Yanks are down. they are healthier and more of their rookies are contributing.

this is (knock on wood) the most likely ALCS matchup and a litmus test series.

I hope Brandon Phillips gets another start in this one. He's got a .440 career BA against Gerrit Cole (in 25 AB with a HR); Kinsler has a .091 career BA against Cole (in 22 AB, no HR).

Also, Phillips had a pretty good game a couple days ago.

All the pitching match-ups in this series are great, which is a little crazy since we won't even get to see Sale or Verlander. I'm really looking forward to this series. Lots of pressure and drama since they're both very good teams playing close to full-strength in September games that matter, but also not too much pressure since the division lead is solid and the Astros aren't an odious team.

Yo, Red Sox, don’t be afraid to go ahead and score some runs early and often. While there’s nothing more thrilling than a massive comeback, that other particular kind of win is very cool also. Thanks.

... it can be made better still, but don't break it while trying.

Lost, somewhat, in the concern about Price’s injury is the fact that he was scuffling in that Miami game before getting hit on his wrist by a screaming liner. DP had been on quite a roll before that game and his rocky beginning and relatively high early pitch count were cause for some pause even before the injury. I’ll be watching tonight for Price’s health and to see if that Marlins game was just a blip along the season’s long path.

One more win guarantees a .600 season (.700 would require 17-4, .650 9-12). Nail it down, Sox.

You know what they once thought was broke? Baseball. In every possible way. Money, as I understand it, had ruined the game.

100 years today, the rumblings about the place of baseball in a world of crisis reached its own crisis in that it reached the players themselves, imperiling the World Series itself.

Is it any surprise the Red Sox were there?

    1918-sep 7 01.jpg

Or that people believed the Red Sox, to say nothing of baseball, would not endure?

I’ve resigned myself to the fact that they plan on starting Leon in the playoffs. I’d rather see Swihart or Vazquez get some experience against the Astros top starters in anticipation of playoff starts,

I prefer they make an amalgam with Leon's bat, Swihart's legs, and Vasquez's arm.

Leon's bat? Maybe you meant "Leon's squat" because pitchers seem to like pitching to him.

Hope to take 2 of three but concerned with Astros as the 2nd best road team in majors (A's aren't too shabby either on road) and their starting pitching

I am all for a postseason that consists of teams playing each other and then taking trains around the country together between games. Would there be altercations? Would they corner another penurious owner for additional postseason shares? More likely they would all just gather and play Fortnite together. No straw hat punching though; the World Series is way too late for summer wear nowadays.

boxos, I gotta tell ya, you've really been gamethreading your ass off lately. You are absolutely at the tippity-top of your considerable game. It's awe-inspiring, and I hope to gamethread my ass off on your level this evening.

Look out, Houston. There'll be thunder on the hill. Bye bye!

I'm glad at least that he got called up, so he'll accrue MLB service time (and $$$) on the DL.

Sucks for the White Sox, though.
