I'll start: Curt Schilling will pitch for our team, Joe Blanton will pitch for their team.

Please, no I am unoriginal and unfunny. Please put me out of my misery, pictures or funky writing in this thread. Please, just try it.

Add info as it becomes available pertaining to this afternoon's affair.

Dueling game threads? I go with this one.

If the Sox can only score 2 runs against Joe Kennedy and Lenny DiNardo, I'm not sure how they can be expected to do better than that against Joe Blanton. And yet that's what is going to be required to win the game.

Lugo leading off is killing this team. With Drew back in the lineup tomorrow, there is no excuse for not using this lineup:

Youks
Pedroia
Ortiz
Manny
Drew
Lowell
Tek
Lugo
Crisp

In fact, I'd probably start Cora over Lugo tomorrow out of sheer desperation to get something going.

Actually, Lugo is one of the few Sox with a decent track record against Blanton: 5 for 14 with 2 doubles. Manny owns him, but the current roster has a cumulative OPS of 590 against him.

Just got back from the game, and, well nothing to say that hasn't been said already in the game thread.
I'll be there again tomorrow afternoon, having made long-ago plans with a friend to attend (otherwise, I'd be tempted to skip it...who am I kidding, I would skip it). Nothing to say except just win.

Right now, Drew is not hitting like a #5 hitter, the only tool currently functioning is his OBP, and he's a good baserunner, so I say put him leadoff. At leadoff, he might not feel pressure to swing and try to make things happen. Even if his power is gone, the good eye seems to be in tact. Youkilis has hit better at #2 than elsewhere. Based on the numbers and qualitative observation (and instinct) I would say:

Drew
Youkilis
Ortiz
Manny
Lowell
Varitek
Crisp
Pedroia
Lugo

Lowell is not a long term solution at #5, but for now that's where he belongs. I like having Pedroia in between the two speedy guys, he's a good contact guy and it might help cut down on the double play risk by having one speedy guy on base in front of or behind slowpoke Pedroia. Right now the consecutive at-bats of Crisp and Lugo and their inability to make good contact are killing this team offensively.

If the bottom of the order is struggling, we need to at least maximize our chances with our high OBP guys in front of the RBI machines.

Yes, we were bound to run into some bumps along the way. Yes, the lack of offense is frustrating. Yes, a few losses in a row quickly brings back all those years of a hot start followed by a steady slip into mediocrity. BUT, most of the "little guys" are doing their thing, there are as many overachievers and under, and if we are so sure Papi and Manny will come around why not a little faith in JD and the other big bats? This is a great team which, while not perfect, will overcome this setback. The guys will come through. Schilling WILL get us back on track. In honor of same, "WHY NOT US" this year?

Prior to this trip to Oakland, the Sox have had three other losing "streaks" this season, each of the 2-game variety.

Curt Schilling has been able to bring them back after each skid -- his brilliant game in Texas on 4/8, a very nice showing in Baltimore on 4/25, and last Saturday which, while not his finest hour, got the job done.

The old man gets it done today.

It is a time for an ace to stand up and do what's he's paid to do: win a game that the team desperately needs to win.
Last time out, the rest of the team bailed out Curt. Now it's time for Curt to reciprocate. Bring your best, big guy!

Schill still prides himself on being the "ace" of the rotation, well here's a real opportunity to prove it. We need a big time performance out of him and he knows it. He'll come through. Of course, I wouldn't be opposed to the offense putting up 5+ runs tonight... or hell just not hitting into 3+ double plays would be swell.

I don't relish the idea of getting swept by Oakland. So, don't get swept. That's all I ask.

Hit and you will win. G38 will be dealing today. Bats need to come alive and hit.

Just win.

Get a win so people stop acting like the sky is falling. The Sox are going through their first extended stretch of bad play all year. Every team has them. Schilling will come up big and the bats will wake up in time for the weekend in Arizona.
