I dunno, look at his peers -- "The '03 draft produced Rocco Baldelli, Mark Teixeira, Jose Reyes, Joe Mauer, Miguel Cabrera, Justin Morneau, Johan Santana, Travis Haffner, Hanley Ramirez, Rich Harden, Lastings Milledge, Brandon Wood, Nick Markakis, Chad Cordero, and Rickey Weeks" -- does he measure up (That was brought to you up by the Boston Globe which has sunk to another low in reporting; friggin horrible, horrible effort there).

In all seriosuness, Murphy looks like Nixon did in '99 and probably won't get the power Trot did, but if he can play all 3 OF positions and maybe 1B too, he'll have a chance to have a career as long as Trot has. I think he deserves a chance to compete for a spot in the spring.

Actually, I wasn't aware that we acquired Hanley through the draft - I thought that we had signed him as an international free agent. See, you learn something new every day!

I believe that only Wood, Cordero, Weeks, Milledge and Markakis among those players were actually taken in '03.

Stupid Red Sox, I told them to draft Santana, Mauer, Cabrera, Reyes and Harden in 2003, but they took Murphy instead! Why did they do that? They must be stupid!

I am usually pretty forgiving of a random screw-up here or there, but I couldn't turn the other way on that one.

2003 Draft

The Boston Globe readers deserve better; sorry for adding non-Murphy comments and I can split this off later, but for a little while, the Globe deserves some scorn.

Wow, that's embarrassing. Rickey? Haffner?

edit: just pointing out the spelling mistakes.

Actually, it's a nice little article on the new prospect (Murphy) but you'd think that SOMEONE would have checked out the 2003 draft before letting that one through. All Cafardo would have had to do to make his little point was to say that "other players of similar age are already making their mark in the majors," but he didn't.

This is just an indication that newspapers are being run on a shoestring these days. The days of fact-checkers, copy editors, and all those backup people who used to be there are long gone. Now, there's only a writer on deadline and a busy sports editor and if they both miss it, it's in the news.

This is the first time I've every written the globe about a mistake. I can't imagine anyone who's followed baseball over the past 10 years writing that. Johan Santana? He was signed in 1995. 1995! 1995!. In 2003, he was in his 4th year with the twins and won the Cy Young award.

Looking at the real 2003 draft, he doesn't look as bad as he did. The shine's come off Eric Duncan. The Ariz guys are still the big regrets. But most of the guys who look good from that draft were taken before Murphy. I think a Murphy/Wily Mo RF combo next year looks pretty good. Murphy should get his fair share of righties spelling Pena and Crisp. If Crisp struggles mightily and Murphy looks like he can handle CF, maybe he gets even more time there.

Santana won the Cy in 2004. Halliday won it in 2003. It's easy to get confused, though since they were both drafted that same year. laugh.gif

The best impact of the 2003 draft, though, was Miguel Cabrera. He went from being drafted in June that year and then leading the Marlins to the WS in October.

Even casual Sox fans and baseball fans would question this, right? Harden pitched in the 2003 ALDS; Hanley Ramirez was never drafted as he's not from the United States or one of its territories; and no draft has ever been nearly so good. Sure, staffing issues and a long weekend of baseball are factors, but still unacceptable in my book from a major newspaper.

ITA, Paul. It's an example of incompetence on the part of Cafardo, to say the least. You'd think he'd be more up on these things. It's his damn job.

Exactly, and not to belabor the point really, but wow- that's not your garden variety error. I mean, they even forgot to include Pujols on that list!

Seriously, I can't believe that made it to print.

The bigger issue is not the names, its educating the public about the impact of a typical baseball draft. The thing the public does not understand often is that a baseball draft is much more risky than football or basketball, even at the very top of the draft, and that a typical draft does not contain tons of All-Stars and Hall of Famers.

Cafardo's piece tells the Globe reader that a typical baseball draft will produce a huge crop of All-Stars just three years later.

Not to get overly dramatic, but that kind of mistake does not get undone very easily.

This would be a reasonable factor if it was a badly edited graph or a single (even glaring) datapoint. To be honest, I really think this was probably sent in to the copy desk with Carfado having just threw in a bunch of ridiculous guys as a lark with a note to research and fill in the appropriately decent 2003 draftees that make his point (e.g. Milledge, Wood, Billingsley, Cordero, Murton, Papelbon...).

My guess is some young clerk is getting his ass kicked today. The alternative is Carfado has completely lost his mind.

I think the biggest - as mentioned on here - is Conor Jackson. Apparently the Sox were really close to drafting him instead of Murphy.

Who knows. Murphy could still impress.

As far as Cafraudo, he is a moron. And his editors should be shot. I don't know how the Globe expects to stave off declining subscriptions with crap like this.

Just another horrible job by the Globe. I have switched my allegiances to the Herald because of this kind of reporting. When you allow Dan S. to throughly trash every Boston sports team, I tend to stop reading. The Herald always has more credible sources and breaks news faster than the Globe. When Chris Snow left this summer, it has gone downhill fast.

"People say, 'What will you do if you don't play football?' Why would I even think of doing anything else? What would I do instead of run out in front of 80,000 people and command 52 guys and be around guys I consider brothers and be one of the real gladiators? Why would I ever want to do anything else? It's so hard to think of anything that would match what I do: Fly to the moon? Jump out of planes? Bungee-jump off cliffs? None of that s--- matters to me. I want to play this game I love, be with my wife and son, and enjoy life."

Sucks for Murphy. What could have been a nice little article was completely ruined by a ridiculous...mistake. I can't even bring myself to call that a mistake. It's just...inaccurate. I wonder what Murphy was thinking when he read that article this morning. I wonder how many loyal Globe readers will be saying "Yeah, but we coulda had Haffner (sic)!" every time his name is brought up. That's embarrassing.
