Red Sox meet with James Shields, but really what they want to do is discuss opt-outs with Max Scherz

An arm has only so many bullets, but you have to play Russian Roulette to find out how many. I mean there are Randy Johnsons and Mark Priors...It is a betting game.   Kecuehl and Sale aren't moving. Cueto could be, but the Red freed up money to try to extend him. ZImmermann is in extension...

Red Sox meet with James Shields, but really what they want to do is discuss opt-outs with Max Scherz

I think that is silly. Post season numbers are a limited sample. Maybe there is something there, but I'd bet on it being noise.   In 51 IP, Kershaw has a 3.46 FIP and struck out over 10 per 9. He has gotten unlucky with guys on base. That is it.

Red Sox meet with James Shields, but really what they want to do is discuss opt-outs with Max Scherz

I actually like Shields. Since 2012, he has pitched more innings than any other pitcher in baseball. He has a decent fastball,a very nice sinker, and 3 quality secondary pitches in a cutter, curveball, and changeup....If I dare say it....He is a bit of a right handed Jon Lester-lite. I think with...

    Beyond Lester: Building a Rotation

How many players really move the needle though now? 3? Scherzer,Shields, and Headley.

    Beyond Lester: Building a Rotation

Fangraphs updated the Depth Charts. The Red Sox are projected to be the best team in baseball by 2 Wins. The Rotation is projected to be the 6th best rotation in baseball.   Interesting.

Who's Your choice for Sox Top of the Rotation Ace?

Maybe he will. Maybe this means the Reds are committed to a rebuild.

Red Sox Agree to Terms with Justin Masterson

I don't like this signing at all. Masterson has severe platoon problems. He is a glorified reliever IMO. He has a real nice sinker and a real nice slider, but no third pitch. An obviously he was having some injury/velocity problems.

Sox acquire Rick Porcello for Yoenis Cespedes, Alex Wilson, and Gabe Speier

I absolutely love this deal. Cespedes is a guy that had no role on this team and you got a solid #3 in return. I'm a bit disappointed the right-handed power didn't command a little bit more, but I am a big Porcello fan and I curious to see what playing behind a good defense can do.    This...

Sox acquire Wade Miley for De La Rosa, Webster, and minor leaguer

This is a bit fun:   http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2014&month=0&season1=2012&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=6893,3815,8779,3254   I mean if Miley can get the BABIP down a tad (He should with this Red Sox defense) and K% rate up a...

I would try to deal Greinke if I signed Scherzer to get value before he opts out

    MLB Hot Stove Rumours Thread

I don't disagree. But I would be a lot more comfortable picking up a big contract hitter than pitcher. Not crazy about signing a pitcher to contend 3 years from now.

Padres are about to get Kemp...I wonder how much $$$ LAD is eating.   I mean is Matt Kemp really THAT different from Carlos Quentin

Sox acquire Wade Miley for De La Rosa, Webster, and minor leaguer

That second point is a huge problem. What are we suppose to do? Blindly trust a team to make good decisions because they "know more than us"? We can't have ideas or criticize them because we don't know as much. I bet you the Red Sox have really no idea on what those players will become...

Sox acquire Wade Miley for De La Rosa, Webster, and minor leaguer

Here is a fun one: I know there was talk of Mike Leake earlier.    http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2014&month=0&season1=2012&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=8779,10130   By pure RA9-Value, they are similar. FIP love Miley's 2012, but...

Sox acquire Wade Miley for De La Rosa, Webster, and minor leaguer

Basically a bad four-seamer, a nice sinker, average changeup, and above average slider.....He doesn't throw a curveball. I don't mind it, but I would like a slightly better changeup from a lefty.

An Examination of the Sustainability of Lester's 2014 Performance

You'd THINK that. But it only started in 2014. The way the year-year graphs is makes it seem different

Look at the graph in the first post. He has lost a bit, but not a lot.

Sox acquire Wade Miley for De La Rosa, Webster, and minor leaguer

I don't really like it.    You essentially got a .3 WAR upgrade, but I believe De La Rosa and Webster have higher upside. Wade Miley is Wade Miley. De La Rosa who sits in the upper 90′s an hits 100 with an elite changeup. Allen Webster struggles with command, but has #2 stuff with a nice...

An Examination of the Sustainability of Lester's 2014 Performance

I thought it was relevant here because it shows that maybe the Red Sox should have bought into his 2014 performance more than it feels like they did.I mean if you thought he was a 5 WAR pitcher he might be worth $155M while a 3.5WAR pitcher might not be.
