    JDM

I think JD is an important piece we would do well to add, but as it continues to look murky, I'm fine with a Logan Morrison type to hit for power and focus on retaining the big pieces we have on the team right now. This team was fully built out in April last year and I don't know if that's...

Winter Meetings 2018: Rumors and Speculation

Dave Cameron at FG projected 6/156 ($26AAV) for JDM. Let's say that's going to be the case. Carlos Santana was projected for 4/72 ($18AAV) but got 3/60 ($20AAV), choosing $ over years Do we add that 6th year and get JDM in the $24-26M range OR Offer 5 years and pay him more in the $27-30M...

Red Sox re-sign Mitch Moreland for 2 years, 13 M

As Gammons said in his somewhat perplexing tweet, this guarantees Hanley doesn't get the PAs necessary for the 2019 vesting option. I think we end up seeing the platoon that never was last year (because of Hanley's shoulder and Mitch's toe). We'll probably see JDM DH against righties with Hanley...

Winter Meetings 2018: Rumors and Speculation

I agree he's an absurdly frustrating player at times. Don't forget that JBJ had two injuries last year that almost definitely altered his at bats. His Strikeout% will always frustrate me, but those two injuries (knee early in yr, thumb late) ruined his chances at a better year at the plate...

Let's get crazy (risky acquisitions and offseason plans)

Very true. Abreu's arbitration will probably take him to around $15M next year. With that being the case, I see a Hosmer signing making so much more sense than trading JBJ and acquiring Bruce. You keep the great outfield defense in tact while getting a similar 1B for around the same AAV...

Let's get crazy (risky acquisitions and offseason plans)

Abreu would be a fascinating avenue. The deal would probably be something revolving around JBJ. Abreu becomes a free agent in 2020 (same as JBJ). I see the Sox making this trade and getting JD. I would be thrilled if JBJ isn't involved but he's probably who they're after to continue to build...

Let's get crazy (risky acquisitions and offseason plans)

https://www.fangraphs.com/library/the-beginners-guide-to-aging-curves/ If you want to tell me that you believe Stanton will be an outlier from the standard and proven aging curve for MLB players, that's totally cool. But his range of outcomes falls into an all too dangerous and precipitous...

Let's get crazy (risky acquisitions and offseason plans)

That's probably possible, but it creates a helluva burden on the salary cap for a guy that will DH/LF now and will just DH on the back half of whatever 5 year deal he gets. Plus the JD signing still leaves a hole at first, and I'm not entirely comfortable going into the season with Hanley/Travis...

Let's get crazy (risky acquisitions and offseason plans)

I continue to see Stanton as a moot point because I think he'll be aiming for the west coast with his NTC. Plus, I can't think of a package I'd be comfortable parting with for a player who is known to have such a steep aging curve. It goes against most analytical thinking, but I've become more...

Sox Acquire Addison Reed for 3 Prospects

Fangraphs pitch value index. His usage over the past 3 years has definitely dogged him.

    Catching Controversy

Simply not the case. Sandy Leon and Christian Vasquez began their official platooning on April 16th this year. That's exactly why I used the numbers since then. Before that, Vazquez had only 3 starts compared to Sandy's 8. My desire to get Avila here was to have him take Sandy's share because...

Sox Acquire Addison Reed for 3 Prospects

I really like the deal, but some interesting stats to keep track of as he now becomes our 8th inning guy. -88% LOB%. Bound to regress at some point, and not in the good way. - His fastball pitch value was 17.9 last year, is only 3.3 this year. A little scary seeing as everyone was worried about...

What will D-Dom do before the trade deadline?

The Mets traded a half season of Reed for 3 lottery tickets who they hope will be the next Addison Reed. Callahan is the closest to the MLB with Nogosek right behind him. Callahan is also the one as the odds on favorite to be that Reed type for the Mets in the future. I really like the deal...

What will D-Dom do before the trade deadline?

What a even-handed and rational take. I tend to agree with it. I don't think there are any bats left on the market that can drastically improve our lineup (JD Martinez) or marginally improve it (Duda). I make non-stop calls to the Mets about Addison Reed and make sure we're on him till the end...

What will D-Dom do before the trade deadline?

I would imagine starting pitcher is now definitely on the radar, though I don't necessarily have the appetite for it. With this news and with the current pieces off the board, I think it's best to stay put and see if this team can win it (yikes). Get a bullpen arm or possibly Garcia if they're...

What will D-Dom do before the trade deadline?

From watching Mitch this year he does play like an above average 1B and that's pretty much how the stats shake out. He's been great at the routine plays (98%), very very good with the likely plays (88% while the average is around a 75%). He's top half in the MLB in DRS and UZR but not a world...

What will D-Dom do before the trade deadline?

Yeah if Carson Smith could give us an inning from now until September 30th I would be shocked. He's started to throw again but is racing the clock. Wilson is probably #1 on my wish list. 35% K rate overall, 42% against lefties. There are a little worrisome stats on him though. His LOB% is...

What will D-Dom do before the trade deadline?

Since we're probably done with the lineup, the 3 bullpen arms out there in terms of both quality and cost are: 1) Brad Hand 2) Justin Wilson 3) Addison Reed I would only trade Chavis for one of the first two, and only for Reed if Duda were involved as well. But judging from the Phillies'...

    Red Sox acquire Eduardo Nunez

I want him here to play third. He's below average there, but not egregiously so. Right now our 3B production has a 53 wRC+. Nunes is sporting a 101 wRC+. If he keeps that up he drags us from 29th in the MLB to 15th, which is sadly an enormous upgrade.
