The 2017/2018 Boston Celtics Regular season thread

If you go to bbref, you can select the player, then select his on/off numbers. I assume the article is talking about the fact that the Celtics score 7 more points/100 when Tatum is on the bench, and perhaps that they have a .535 eFG compared to .471. The difficulty in on/off alone is that it...

Lonzo and his brother Chuck Cunningham and his other brother Chuck Cunningham

I think it's great. I mean I think he's a blowhard but the NBA has plenty of room for personalities and fun. The only thing that is not great is if Lonzo legitimately wants him to back off and he won't.

Alex Cora named Red Sox manager

If Xander turns into Carlos Correa under Cora's watch, I'll surgically erase the parts of my brain that make me remember all the dreaded Sunday lineups that featured Cora.

The 2017/2018 Boston Celtics Regular season thread

I'm not sure how being condescending actually helps you avoid rehashing things. It actually invites people to reply. Take this as a moderator note.

The 2017/2018 Boston Celtics Regular season thread

Obviously the Kyrie Irving story is going to be a big part of the season, but let's not make this thread a re-hash of all the same talking points that were made in the trade thread.

WiFi security flaw puts everyone's everything at risk

Yep, nothing is guaranteed protected (although I have read other articles that suggest most https sites are fine), but I think the browser based is going to be a little safer than app. I could be wrong, I know nothing really about the security built into apps.

WiFi security flaw puts everyone's everything at risk

I'm not an expert but: - This is essentially a Man in the Middle attack. It doesn't expose your actual router, and they can't send instructions to your wifi network (at least if you are using WPA2.) So I'm not sure you really have to worry about connected devices because of this specific hack...

    Putting Pedroia Out To Pasture?

First off - this really isn't going to happen. Dombrowski's style is to wait for holes to appear in the dam then plug them. But of course, the idea of forcing himself to think beyond "let me identify the biggest hole and plug it with the best guy available" approach to team building actually...

    4G Android phone megathread

My boot times are better but battery life seems worse. the picture in picture thing is really not well implemented (or working for most Pixel users) for something they are advertising as a core feature. It's ok because it's totally new and really in most situations my phone screen isn't quite...

Giancarlo Stanton Stokes Baseball's Great Home-Run Debate

I wonder if the question is nearly as interesting if he ends up at 57. Actually, I mostly don't think it is interesting at all. Like a political argument, it simply comes down to whether you are an asterisk type or if you are not. MLB has decided that the "steroid era" doesn't need asterisks...

Kyrie Irving traded to Celtics for IT, Crowder, Zizic, BKN 1st, 2020 2nd

FTR, I think Ainge is the best GM for this team. But I don't think appeals of "Ainge did it so you can't argue against it" hold any fucking weight whatsoever.

How good is Al Horford on this team?

Stevens brought Horford more to the perimeter, whether by design or not. So if you look at his stats, his offensive rebounding and his shots at the rim were down while his assists and 3p shots were up. He had been slowly extending his range anyway - he always had a fairly lethal 16 footer, now...

Kyrie Irving traded to Celtics for IT, Crowder, Zizic, BKN 1st, 2020 2nd

The Celtics should absolutely plan on Irving being great (meaning good enough that they will want to give him a max and he doesn't walk), so yes, in that case, it helps the short and medium term planning at the expense of the long term, and the only person who's managed to move my needle on this...

Kyrie Irving traded to Celtics for IT, Crowder, Zizic, BKN 1st, 2020 2nd

See, there's where I'm talking about the overrating. Kyrie Irving as a top 15 player in the NBA? I'm not even sure we are watching the same league. Top 15 at "give me the ball and get out of my way" OK yes, I'll grant you that. But that's not the only skill that NBA teams need. Top 15 at...

Kyrie Irving traded to Celtics for IT, Crowder, Zizic, BKN 1st, 2020 2nd

Sure, but your trust in Danny mantra is boring conversation, and Danny has fallen in love with plenty of ho hum players before. That doesn't mean Kyrie is shitty, it just means Danny is hardly flawless (for the record, I can't think of a basketball GM that is) Regardless, in context of the...

Kyrie Irving traded to Celtics for IT, Crowder, Zizic, BKN 1st, 2020 2nd

I don't think Ainge or Stevens would argue that Kyrie Irving is super mega better than Al Horford or Gordon Hayward.

Kyrie Irving traded to Celtics for IT, Crowder, Zizic, BKN 1st, 2020 2nd

I think Horford is better than Irving in terms of winning actual basketball games in the NBA not masturbatory sessions to ESPN highlights. That this is because he spreads his value across a lot of different things instead of being really great at one doesn't make his contribution less. I...

Kyrie Irving traded to Celtics for IT, Crowder, Zizic, BKN 1st, 2020 2nd

I agree, in addition to Al Horford and Gordon Hayward, it would be nice to get a third star. I am trying to be real hopeful about Ainge's evaluation and on Stevens ability to use Irving, but the assumption that he is the star this team has been waiting for is just wrong. He hasn't been that...

    How to stop the tankathon

The problem is that competitiveness in the NBA really requires both luck and skill. Look at the Spurs - model organization, but they got super lucky to get Duncan, and then they got super lucky again to get Kawhi Leonard (in that even if they had identified him (the skill part), they got lucky...
