Baseball Is Broken (on the field, proposed rule changes, attendance, etc.)

Actually saw one proposal that I really like without the 3 batter rule. No warm up pitches for relievers brought into the game in the middle of an inning, they have to pitch right away. If they are brought in at the beginning of the inning they get the same warm up pitch as normal. This will...

Is the NBA star system broken? If so, can it be fixed?

Get rid of the max contract and most of the problem with super teams go away.

    2018-19 Offseason News, Rumors, Trades

Really all they need is to add a salary floor, the problem with MLB isn't that the Red Sox and Yankees aren't spending enough, it's the likes of TB, Miami, and Oakland who won't spend any.

    March/April MLB game thread.

No he wasn't. I was just saying even if it was a no hitter, it wouldn't change the equation for me.

I personally have no problem bunting to break up a no hitter either if you're going to shift.

Baseball Is Broken (off the field/labor relations etc.)

Seem pretty easy to me, if a team spends less than the floor, the difference between their payroll and the floor must be paid to the MLBPA, who then must use 50% of the money toward a bonus distributed to all players on MLBPA's retirement pension, and 50% as a bonus distributed to all players...

The Goat Thread: SBLII vs Eagles

The pass was thrown too high, 1 foot lower and he'd have caught it.

    The offseason heading into 2018

This isn't that difficult to figure out. Fans are fans of the "club", which is 100% of property of ownership. So from the fans' perspective their interest and the ownership's are mostly aligned together. Yes, the owernship also wants to make money aside from winning, which the fans don't...

    October Game Thread

No one is arguing that it was a horrible decision, one of the worst ever, just not as bad as Grady Little's.

    October Game Thread

If you can't grasp the concept of blowing a game that one had a 90% chance to win is worse than blowing a game one had a 50% chance to win (at best). I don't know what else there is I can say.

    October Game Thread

Pedro's numbers after 100 pitches were not all that great, and with a 3 run lead there was no reason to push him. This was a tie game, even if he uses Britton and he pitches a scoreless 11th, the O's are still no better than 50/50 to win it.

    October Game Thread

There is no way this is worse than Grady Little, Little turned an almost sure win into a loss. At worst Buck lost a 50/50 game.

    Red Sox sign David Price

He also got Texas to take one of those horrible extensions off his hands. We don't even know DD will be here in 3 years. I think we should evaluate this transaction without worrying about what that Red Sox GM might do in 3 years. I'm more worried about the potential downside than I am about...

    Red Sox sign David Price

The opt out is not in the Red Sox favor. But it's mostly so that it limits the Red Sox's upside on this deal, the downside remains the same. But I'm not sure the upside (Price being underpaid at $33/YR from year 4-7 of the contract), is really all that likely anyway. The key is that when the...

Rob Manfred "open" to banning the shift

Let's just ban defenders altogether.   Let's just award bases based on where the bat is hit have 9 DH types on every team, that will improve the offense and speed up the game.

    The premature re-signing Lester thread

And if you're willing to go 150, go 155, and on and on and on.  You have to draw the line somewhere.  Who's to say that the original line wasn't 120 and going to 144 is already as far as they can stretch themselves.

    Cherington press conference

In aggregate, for a guy who's already made $108 million in his career,  he has nothing to lose.   But since he's no longer on the Red Sox I find this debate moot.  We'll see if he pitches for $500k next year, my money is on not.

Stephen Drew traded to Yankees for Kelly Johnson

There are more ways to spend money than just on the payroll. Maybe this will allow them to bid higher on a Cuban FA, or a Japaneses FA, There are too many possibilities for you to conclude that saving 3.5 million on this deal does nothing for the organization preparing for the future.

Red Sox starting pitching going forward

Because doing so destroys roster flexibility. You're confusing applying a principle in action to the principle itself.
