    20 K's: 4/29/1986

Before the PED's, before the pinstripes, before he threw the bat handle at Piazza, before he became the TCM, before the first affair with a teenager, there was a magic night at Fenway Park that first turned my attention to the local ball club. I remember the front page Boston Globe store the...

    Safari 13 Ad Blockers

I've been using uBlock Origin with Mac Safari for longer than I can remember. Safari 13 is going to break it, so I haven't upgraded yet. What should I replace uBlock Origin with when I do upgrade?

Some Amazon links inside posts are getting busted

See the link in http://sonsofsamhorn.net/index.php?threads/i-am-an-addict.16340/page-7#post-2027356 It just opens the top level Amazon.com page for me in iOS Safari. I think this has been happening for months, but it would be nice if the links weren't massaged at all if they can't be done...

Potential DNS Rebind attack visiting SoSH

This didn't get noticed in Backwash, so I'll ask again: is this warning from Safari cause for concern on my side? On the server side?

Seeking 4x1 HDMI switch w/RCA audio (stereo) out

More than 10 years ago, I bought a HD TV system for my family room which has a single DVI (not HDMI) input to the plasma display. (Told you it was retro.) The audio in this room goes through retro RCA cables to a stereo receiver which has no digital audio input. This is workable for my DirecT...

In Safari, should I be concerned about this prompt for a certificate?

When I connect to theatlantic.com in Safari, I sometimes get the following prompt:     I have always hit CANCEL. But the prompt keeps coming back.   In Keychain Access, I have searched for this certificate. It is in the login keychain, and when I click on it in that app, it reveals a "child"...

My Mac cannot connect to sonsofsamhorn.net

The Windows machines in my house can load sonsofsamhorn.net. My iOS devices can load sonosofsamhorn.net. But as of this afternoon, my Mac Book Pro (Yosemite 10.10.4) is having all sorts of problems loading sonosofsamhorn.net.   Safari is glacially slow at loading any page on the site.   Chrome...

Adding USB 3.0 ports to a cheap 2008-era PC

Several years ago I bought one of these PCs.   I would like to yank the obsolete modem card and insert a PCI card to give it some USB 3.0 ports.  When I cracked the case for the first time a few days ago, the first obvious problem came up. USB 3.0 cards all seem to need a connection to the power...

Seattle: Comcast says faster speeds ready, reboot at will

Link   I don't know if Comcast is rolling this out nationwide or not, but my DL speed did go from ~30Mbps to ~60Mbps (according to speedtest.net) after I power-cycled my router just now.  If you're a Comcast customer and feeling adventurous, give it a try.

    iPod Classic has been discontinued

Apple has (without fanfare) discontinued the iPod Classic. This is a problem for me, since I own more music than will fit on a 64GB iPod Touch, and I like to have my whole library with me in my car.    Amazon has stock only from third party sellers. Target.com and WalMart.com no longer have any...

Seeking gigabit switch with FCC Class B rating

I want to upgrade my house from 10/100 to gigabit Ethernet, but I am having trouble finding a switch with a FCC Class B rating. I assumed that a bargain-brand TPLink unit I bought from newegg would be a “B”, and it turned out to be an “A.” Newegg is taking it back with no restocking fee because...

Extracting DVD surround sound audio for playback on Sonos

My basement TV is connected to a surround sound receiver, and when I watch DVD/BluRay titles, I get surround sound as you would expect. I have a couple of music DVD’s (Beatles Love and Yellow Submarine) that have surround sound audio mixes. I would like to extract the audio from these for...
