Peter Gammons on BBTN is saying he's being offered to the Red Sox.

I bet he is being offered. If Beane waited another week to move him he might lose as much luster as Joe Blanton, before he had to move him. He's still a decent pitcher, who can get out righties. But be very dubious about these A's hurlers. They're pitching in front of the best defense in baseball, in an extremely cavernous park. Street hasn't looked dominant all year. I'd trade for him, but I wouldn't give up more than a B- prospect (which means it's a non-starter).

Offered for what? Probably 2 or 3 of our best prospects, knowing Beane.

There's some logic to a swap of Engel Beltre-type guys to the A's. IOW, as the Sox build up a set of highly-regarded recent draftees who they simply buy later in the draft, they also get a chance to send those guys to a lower-budget team and reap a return on the cash. Similarly, the lower budget team effectively gets the players without having to pay those bonuses.
Not sure that's enough to get Street, but I imagine it's part of the Sox approach to this year's draft in particular, and likely something they are aware of as a competitive advantage that they can leverage into talent at the MLB level. I don't know the status of those types of guys from prior year drafts, though...obviously, you have to see some production from the guys in the year they are barred from being traded for the model to work. -------------------- "Their place in the sporting pantheon is fixed; the St. Jude of sports, patron saint of lost athletic causes, their spirit will be summoned at the bleakest of moments." Street has put up spectacular numbers against RHH over the course of his career.
avg obp slg ops .192 .227 .251 .478 LHH have had much better success. Look at the OPS jump. avg obp slg ops .243 .317 .419 .737 So, could Street, somewhat of a health risk, be had for something less than the moon? Would that price be worth acquiring someone with a proven track record of success agaisnt RHH? IMO he could be a great complement to Okajima late in games. The problem with that is the Red Sox already have a reliever who is death on RHHs. He threw 2.2 innings of no hit, no run , no walk (3K) ball yesterday out of the pen. Justin Masterson will be a great complement to Okajima and much more. There is no reason to go after Street unless Okajima or MDC come down with an injury.

Well, that's true this season, but Street isn't a FA until 2011, and Masterson's going to end up in the rotation at some point. Plus, the pen, even with Masterson, is thin.

Plus, the pen, even with Masterson, is thin. I thought of the Masterson comp. when posting last night. If Street can be had for a reasonable price I would prefer the Sox mae the move. Bullpen depth is a good thing. Best case scenario, this takes alot of pressure off of an unknown quantity in Jedi. Worst case scenario is that it gives Boston the flexibility to put him into the rotation for a few spot starts if nec. Financially I think it's safe to say Timlin comes off the books next year so there would be room for his salary as well. It's an opp. to buy low (in theory) on a guy with a pretty good track record. -------------------- "Manny Delcarmen is entropy." -Rough Carrigan

I would definitely add Street for the right price (which would not be cheap since he's under control for a while and a talent - albeit one with some injury risks). The best part about it would be the re-ignition of the 'Papelbon should start' debates here if we had him to step into the closing role. That would be awesome.

FWIW, the SF Chronicle's report doesn't include the Sox as potential suitors:
QUOTE With a week left before the trading deadline, rumors involving Huston Street have intensified, with the Dodgers, Brewers, Mets, White Sox, Rays and Reds all believed to have interest. Los Angeles had two scouts at the series against Tampa Bay, including Bill Lajoie, who is a special adviser to general manager Ned Coletti.

Is Street right now even that much better than Delcarmen? The stats are very similar and each have displayed great stretches combined with inconsistency. If the idea is to really solidify the bullpen for this year than I'm not sure we are really getting a guy who will not have the inconsistency of our other MRs. He's obviously been extremely effective in the past so for that reason I wouldn't be surprised at all if we got some very good innings out of him now and in the future. Though if you want a 'brand name' MR/CL then you're going to have to pay and I'd imagine the conversation starts with at least one of Bowden/Anderson/Bard/Kalish/Tejeda.
