It would be tough for someone to like the rewatchables more than I like it. I will not be buying 1999
I may approach you in this, and 1999 is an incredible year for film. But I have no interest in paying for this, partially because it'll likely another app and what have you.

For all I know, this happened months ago (given how little attention I’ve paid to his Ringer content), but I noticed yesterday that Lombardi is now writing for the Athletic and is starting a new podcast with Adnan Virk.

I'm in the same boat, and I bet American Pie is a really good movie to look back on and discuss since it has aged in such an interesting (mostly poorly) way. I loved the Field of Dreams one, especially when Chris starts to talk about what if Kevin Costner really started flexing his power over the players "How about I plow this field over and start going corn again, and all of you guys go right back to hell?"
FYI the American Pie podcast is free on Luminary, no signup needed. Just click through the Ringer link. All future 1999 Rewatchables podcasts will probably be behind the pay wall.

GM shuffle(Lombardi) already has 2 episodes out. It is pretty much the same show

I tried to listen to the Clark and Mays Ringer show but these guys really suck

It is interesting that the Ringer didn’t give Lombardi any sort of a farewell. Guessing the parting wasn’t entirely amicable, and it doesn’t help that Lombardi is completely redoing the Ringer podcast now, right down to the nearly identical title.

I definitely do not share this opinion, but to each their own.
I have read that others like them. I have been fair in giving them multiple attempts. I can tolerate them when either is on Simmons's show but cant make it through their show. Like you intimate, its just preferece.

Meh, him and Simmons have been chummy for a while. I'm guessing it was more Lombardi was offered more money to have all his thoughts consolidated on one platform. Plus he didn't write articles for them (or did so very rarely), so he was always more of a supplemental talent.

I am with you---the Clark/Mays podcast is uniquely awful at least in terms of the quality of football analysis. I am a big fan of many Ringer podcasts but that one is not at all good.

Getting back to The Ringer's dalliance with Luminary: Many of the largest Podcast publishers are leaving the app: Podcast One, iHeartRadio, Barstool, Rogan, Endeavor, NY Times, Gimlet, Parcast, Anchor... Again, the subscription podcast model is considered by many in the space to be a fool's errand and most of the major content providers want to see them die a quick death.

That said, there's no downside for the Ringer. Worst case they take the Rewatchables they released and put them out normally. Toss some ads in there and voila.

Definitely. This is just a trial balloon. I am happy to pay for almost any subscription if I feel like I'm going to get something out of it. But I am behind on all my podcasts as it is already, (there is SO many great things out there) so it seems stupid to pay for an account. Pass.

KOC at the Ringer published a piece this morning about his father and their bond over the Boston Celtics. Sadly, his father was just diagnosed w/ Stage IV cancer. Worth the read:

This is extremely sad, mainly because KOC's life seems to almost mirror mine (well a more successful version of it). His relationship with his Dad and sports is no different than mine, and probably many others on this board. What a terrifying, emotional story.

KOC is the best, he just seems like a genuinely happy dude who loves what he does. That was a great, but sad, read - thanks for linking.

I might have to start a thread just for the Rewatchables. It is easily my favorite podcast...easily.

The latest one I listened to “The Hangover” is phenomenal. Besides just being funny they have the added bonus of not being topical so I find myself re-listening to them.

The best podcasts don’t always match the best movies. The Firm is an ok movie; The Firm Rewatchables pod is an all time great podcast.

Bill, Chris, and Sean together are the best. Their dynamic of Chris egging Bill on to tease Sean reminds me of a funny Irish family dynamic that brings me a sense of nostalgia and entertainment.

I concur. I've found myself listening to movies I've never seen, but also actively sought out movies that are on the podcast that I haven't seen yet

I really wish they had regular hockey content.

Katie Baker was pretty good at hockey coverage when she was at Deadspin, but I understand she wants to also do other stuff.

Hell, even a podcast mention here or there .

Looks like Mina Kimes is going to appear regularly on The Ringer. I guess any beef with ESPN is buried.

Doesn’t Rusillo do stuff with ESPN still?

I really like Mina, she’s a good get.

It’s been buried for a while. Especially once Skipper left and one of his buddies was elevated to that role.
Ah ok - thanks. And as others said, Russillo's show with Simmons and his interviews with Zach Lowe should've told me that the hatchet was already buried.

And I agree with the Mina love - she is great.

Simmons has mentioned multiple times on his podcast that he won't talk/cover hockey because hockey fans are too hard on him and they don't like outsiders covering their sport or something like that. As a non-hockey guy I didn't really get it, but he has explained it before.

I get it. Hockey gets ignored by so many outlets that hockey fans are used to going to hockey specific sources. They think any mainstream guy trying to cover it here and there is clueless and are offended by the effort, unless they demonstrate really deep knowledge and passion for it.

Can't imagine how anyone would get that idea after he acted like a fan and then got multiple players on his home teams names wrong during the Bs 2011 cup run

To be fair he also covered the NBA for a living and yet butchers the names of multiple players every single podcast. He's hilariously bad at both remembering names and pronouncing the ones he knows.

As far as Lombardi is concerned, I might actually seek him out (on what's left of my subscription to The Athletic) now that he's no longer paired with Tate Frazier.
A-fucking-Men.

Virk is a professional and the show is about 1,000,000 times better without Tate, who knows next to nothing about football or hosting a podcast

The Top Gun Rewatchables is peak Rewatchables. This is exactly what I think it should be. A very popular, rewatchable movie that is always on cable and a bunch of people who love it breaking it down.

There were so many funny parts but my favorite was after Mallory was talking about what Charlie might have done after Maverick left, Bill says "good thing Fennessey wasn't in on this one. We;d have to drag his body out of the room like Goose getting pulled from the ocean"

Between the Top Gun Rewatchables and Bill’s interview with Kevin Costner, this has been the best week of Podcasting for the Ringer so far.

The "we're not going there but we're going there" descriptions of Cruise's lack of chemistry with McGillis were kind of hysterical.

They buzzed the tower a couple times

I was at first disappointed that the Top Gun episode bumped the scheduled Reservoir Dogs episode back one week since the Maverick trailer was released, but it was really entertaining.
This is up now. They just delayed it and did 2 in a week

The Reservoir Dogs episode dropped overnight. Listened to it this morning. They absolutely nailed the recasting what if for Mr Orange. Felt like the beginning of a new category.

Costner was really awesome, agreed.

And Top Gun Recappables is definitely peak everything. That was an incredibly entertaining and hilarious listen, I was gleeful the entire time. I might even listen to that again, which I have literally never done for a podcast. Simmons, Rubin, Ryan, and Concepcion is a MURDERERS row grouping. Cumulative OPS is definitely about 4.000.

They need to include Rubin on more Rewatchables podcasts, she's great. I've always felt it's a little weird that they usually only include women on the panel for the romcom/chick flick episodes.

It was terrific.
I got the impression that somebody (maybe Ryan?) older is dating a much younger Ringer staffer and that that was a source of some of the tower buzzing.

Other way around, I believe: it's Mal, and her husband is much older.

I have to say I really enjoyed Russillo on The Town Rewatchable. Obviously has the Boston connection and he is really funny too. LOL'd more than a few times.
