Time flies. Seems like yesterday he had the “lazy” tag dropped on him in the draft.

Chris Price at BSJ shares this news...

10:50 a.m.: The Patriots are one of five teams interested in wide receiver Jordy Nelson, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Nelson, who will be 34 years old prior to the start of the 2019 season, has 613 catches over the course of his career. He was recently cut loose by the Raiders after one season in Oakland. The veteran has a lot of the same traits the Patriots look for at this stage of free agency — he’s smart, durable and cost-effective. In my experience, he’d be a good fit in New England. At the same time, New England could be bidding against some of the better teams in the league for his services — Schefter says Seattle, Tennessee and Kansas City are among the other teams who have expressed interest.

In fairness it includes Price’s belief that Nelson would be a good fit but might be pricey.

I think it doesn’t happen. Too big of a name and near the age where he’s over Mt. Ngata.

Even if he is Decker — which seems dubious — it should not matter all that much as long as his contract is not guaranteed.

Roderick and Drewdog’s posts summarize why signing Nelson is worth doing. I hope it happens.

There was a great Marty tweet a couple of days after he won the Super Bowl that always stuck with me. I can't remember exactly what it said but it was basically that the parade was over and he was still making cereal for his daughter the way he did every off season. There was some genuine surprise -- or least it seemed there was -- that it really didn't change anything. He spent a career climbing this ladder only to find that the view really wasn't any different. He's clearly not wired like Tom Brady.

He's a pretty thoughtful guy. It was a very different perspective and not really surprising that he retired after his shortened season the next year. He's a good follow on the social media nets.

Another example of how it is no fun and sucks to be part of the Patriots.

The Patriots also did a solid for RB James White, renegotiating his contract to give him a $250k signing bonus. White narrowly missed out on a $250k incentive last year (53.6% of offensive snaps, 1,176 total yards). White's cap charges: $4.625m in '19 and $4.625m in '20.

It feels like that's a really smart use of money. I know on a much smaller scale that people remember when they narrowly miss out on bonuses or miss out for questionable reasons they had no control of, and considering the relatively tough environment of New England, knowing they have the flexibility to acknowledge these situations and compensate the players probably goes a lot longer in terms of player relations and keeping/recruiting players they really want than the value would be in getting a FA who is $3 million player than a $2.5 million player, for instance.

I think, too, you never want to be in a situation where the team thinks it's best to sit a player for a few plays and the player is fighting to get in so he hits his incentives. If the team consistently takes care of the player in these kind of situations (as the Patriots have), you avoid contentiousness about playing time.

It's almost as if instances like these are part of the Patriots' culture which Omar Kelly thinks doesn't exist.

Gilmore restructured to get an addition $5.6MM in cap space this year.
@FieldYates
Source: the Patriots converted $8.5M of CB Stephon Gilmore's contract into a signing bonus, creating $5.67M in cap space for 2019. Some flexibility for the champs.

With so many picks this year and next we can help off-set Gilmore's high cap costs by having more rookie contracts on the roster. That's all I got with it. Really needed space this year. Wondering when the Brady extension comes. I am already excited for the edit (2020) off-season, which is shaping up to be huge. This team man, this team.

One of the recurring themes in the "why are they good" thread is that BB is flexible in his approach, despite having some ironclad core beliefs. So maybe this year and next are years he doesn't trade all those stockpiled picks for even more picks, as he is commonly assumed to do all the time. It obviously puts a lot of pressure on the crap-shootiest part of any team (the draft), but that's where they are.

Have to remember guys like Gronk, DH, and DMC likely won't be around in 2021 for the final year of Gilmore's deal, and may not be around in 2020 either

So at this point, looking at the signing, both incoming and outgoing, it seems that the draft (or later FA signing) may need to be looking at these areas, (sorted in what I think is their order of need), first list is needs for 2019; the second is for depth but mainly for future grooming:
  • DLine, both interior and edge
  • WR
  • OT
  • LB, especially for cover backers
  • TE
  • S
  • QB

This obviously assumes Gronk is coming back. I don't see DLine as quite as big of a need after the Bennett trade and the Pennel signing

True about TE; but at the moment, that's all we can go by.

As for DL, my thought is that they lost Flowers, Claiborne and Shelton while adding Bennett and Pennel. So it seems to me that they need at least one more guy for rotational purposes at the very least.

Agreed. And I've now seen Tillery as mocked to the Pats at 32 in several mocks. I wouldn't be against that at all. Their last 2 first round DL picks didn't work out quite as planned.

They are running four deep at LB with Hightower, Van Noy, Bentley, and Roberts. You could argue for putting it in the second category given Van Noy, Roberts, and Hightower are nearing the end of their contracts, but I don't see it up with the more urgent needs you have listed there.

I know there's some clamor for 230-pound coverage LBs, but Belichick hasn't compromised on this to date and I don't see him doing so after they won a SB largely on their 250-pound LBs just mauling an undersized Rams team. I think if anything they'd address this via safety (if they had a second Chung, he would play a lot).
