The A’s. I want the Sox to win the whole shebang but if they don’t.... I’d be pulling for the A’s, then Cleveland. Losing to NY would mean they’re 4 more wins away from going to the WS again. No thanks

In choosing the Yankees you also need to consider their health. Right now Judge and Chapman are suspect. If Gregorious plays - he'll probably be substantially degraded. Then there's the reliance on Severino being that guy again. Red Sox have home field which really hurts those cheap RF home runs. There's also Boone.

I find the A's scarier.

The Yankees have Tanaka and Happ as well who are pitching at the top of their games. Judge is not suspect either. He was hitting lasers in his first games back against the Red Sox. Their pen doesn't even need Chapman for that unit to be a huge weapon as they have Robertson, Betances, and Britton. Their lineup is scary since they got McCutchen to replace Brett Gardner at the top. McCutchen-Judge-Stanton is every bit as dangerous as the Red Sox top 3. Andujar is the Rookie of the Year. Hicks and Torres are having good seasons. As currently constituted, they are well set up for a 5 game series. I definitely want the A's over facing this team.

Whichever team wins the 15-inning extra-innings game in Oakland and has to fly to Boston overnight to play the next day at Fenway.

A’s kicked away an easy win with their bullpen and the great Matt Chapman failing and blowing an 8-5 lead. F. Rodney walked 2 batters in the 8th and Denard Span, who has discovered Just for Men for his beard, drove them both in. Chapman booted a 3rd out grounder in the ninth. I want to play the A’s.

I hope the Red Sox see the positives in sweeping the MFY's and sending them across the country to Oakland...
They definitely do, Cora just was quoted on it yesterday, but NY can make that series meaningless for everyone with two more wins in Tampa (they win a tie with OAK based on the totally irrelevant tiebreaker of division record).

The Yankees magic number is down to two to clinch the game being at Yankee Stadium. They have a fair chance of locking it up before the weekend at Fenway since they have two games to play before they get there.

Sale/Price > Tanaka/Happ

Betts/Martinez > Judge/Stanton

Kimbrel/Barnes/Brasier is about a wash with Robertson/Betances/Britton, and Chapman hasn't pitched well against us at all.

Benintendi and X are more dangerous than Hicks and Torres.

So if it comes down to Andujar having a pretty good season that's making you wet your pants when it comes to the MFY, well, that's pretty ridiculous. The Sox are better and more consistent than that team top to bottom and there's no reason to fear them. Could they beat us in a series? Sure. Shit happens. Should it be the expectation? Absolutely not.

I’ll take the A’s, just because the national announcers are insufferable when it comes to the MFY.

We could be up 2-0 in the series, leading 24-0 in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, when Luke Voit “launches” a cheapy solo shot to pull within 23. Joe Buck or whoever would then cream himself with anticipation as he cries out in pure bliss “AND HERE COME THE YANKEES!!!”

Fuck that.

This is the first compelling argument for the A’s I’ve heard.

Oakland has no rotation after Fiers, who will be used in the playoff game. Trevor Cahil? Brett Anderson? Those are your first two starters in Fenway. Much better matchup than Happ or Tanaka or a resurgent Severino. Hell even CC worries me more than the A’s front of the rotation. The answer is Oakland, all the way.

I want the Yankees. I want the psychodrama. I want this chapter to be written and include the MFY.

I also think we are the better team. Happ scares me but Tanaka is a guy we have gotten to 3 out of 4 times we faced him this year. Betances, Britton, Chapman...all seem shaky lately and especially against the Red Sox. Judge is Judge. Their fielding is spotty and I think Boone is not good.

One additional item with the A's is the travel and time change (obviously for both teams)

With them it's:
  • A's travel from NYC to Boston Wednesday night (A's have been on EDT since Sunday night)
  • Both teams travel from Boston to Oakland Saturday night (A's have been in EDT 6 days)
  • Red Sox in PDT through Tuesday night (3 days)
  • Both teams travel Tuesday night red-eye back to Boston for a Thursday game
Normally things would be an advantage for Boston, but Oakland will have already been on the east coast for 5 days when they meet the Red Sox. In the meantime an extended series finds both teams travelling 6 hours (airtime only) twice. This compares to Cleveland's/Houston's 2:45 flights one time zone apart.

Not a terribly big deal, but a Yankee series has virtually no travel variables.

the "chapter" on the Yankees can be that their fans were so confident they were heavy division favorites after Stanton, then we ran away with it in July & August, and because of that they were one & done in the WC game.

I don't need more.

Let's add more to the Yankees chapter. For the Wild Card Game, their brain trust was arrogant enough to skip their most-consistent starter (Happ) so he could start twice against the Sox in the Division Series. A series that they never get to!

Severino is kind of an X factor for me. It all depends on how he looks in the Wild Card game. When Severino is on, he has stuff equal to Sale and gives NY three quality starters. If he pitches like he has since the All Star break, bring on the Yankees.

He kind of got it back together in his last three starts, giving up just 4 ER in 17.2 innings. Jon Abbey in another thread said he got his slider back.

Have to say A’s. I feel like a wimp but 40 years after 1978 and 15 years after 2003 I cant take the pain of losing to them and as the upperdawgs the joy of winning wont be enough to chance it. We got 2004, I don't need no more.

Maybe if they were the 108 game winner and we were the underdawgs I’d want the Yankees, but not as the upperdawgs

Maybe if Sale was 100% and JDM was crushing the ball at the end and the team didnt limp to the finish I’d want the Yankees

But regardless of my wants or not wants whats going to happen is going to happen. Nobody cares what I want and my power is not great enough to will what I want to happen (if it was I would want the Yankees and will a merciless and humiliating spanking on them)

The closer it gets to game time the more I'm hoping for a 37 inning game that the A's win. But even if it only goes 9, I can't root for the MFY to win. YED is always best served as early as possible.

Oakland for sure. For those of you who want to feeling of getting to beat the Yanks...well, the only reason they are in the WC is because of our dominance in the regular season. So in a ways, if they lose tonight, we beat them then too.

I still think the path is easier through the Yankees. We KNOW we can beat them.
The more exciting series will be through the Yankees.
The more satisfying victory would be against the Yankees. Who doesn't like beating the Yankees?

I get not wanting to lose to the Yanks, but I'd rather lose to a 100 win team than a team no one was talking about until August. Bring me the Yankees. Bring me Huston. Bring me the NL All-Star team.

Good old Huston. Made half a dozen of my favorite films (Treasure of the Sierra Madre!) and capped it off with one of the creepiest villain characters ever.

I'm pulling for Oakland. There's just a sort of mutually-assured destruction to every Sox-Yanks series that I can live without.

It's not really about the possibility of losing to the Yankees. That stinks, and brings up old wounds, but we have 2004 to salve those wounds. However, I can watch and enjoy virtually any series that does not include the Yankees. When the Yankees aren't in it, the postseason is simply more fun for me. If the Yankees are in, I have to root against them, regardless of their opponent.
It's like a biological imperative at this point in my life, and it's not going to change.
The ALCS last season was not fun, until the very end, and even then, it was more of a relief than anything else.

So I'd prefer not to have that unnecessary and negative drama. Bring on the A's.

Up until recently I thought the Yankees were the easier team to beat, but with Judge and Gregorius playing well, and perhaps Chapman rising to the occasion, I've changed my tune.

Thing about the A's in long(er) series is - how many times can they parade out their pen with (say) 4 games in 5 days without burning them out? I assume the Red Sox lineup won't give the A's starters much room for error.

I’ll be honest: I’m looking forward to a Yankees series because it’ll be dramatic and interesting. Yankees/Red Sox is great sports entertainment, and we haven’t seen it on the playoff stage since freaking 2004.

The wrong side of the bridge....
I was surprised to see that the Sox and Yanks hadn't met in postseason since then. I was, like, how does that work? Both teams make the playoffs more often than not. But their success cycles, so to speak, haven't meshed that much--this is only the 5th time they've both been in the playoffs out of 14 seasons since then. Here's how it's broken down since '04:

Years when neither team has made the playoffs -- 1
Years when the Sox have made it, but not the Yankees -- 3
Years when the Yankees have made it, but not the Sox -- 5
Years when both made it -- 5 (counting this year)

For seven of those 14 seasons, teams in the same division were prohibited from meeting until the ALCS, so that cut off some of their opportunities to meet since one or both could be eliminated in the ALDS. In fact, that's four of the years in which they both made the playoffs ('05, '07, '08, '09).

Since the new two wildcard set up began in 2012, they've only had two seasons in which they both made the post-season...last year and this year.

Looks like we're going to get a repeat of last year's weird situation of facing a team in the final weekend of the regular season and then opening the playoffs against that same team a few days later. Sure hoping it plays out better for the Sox this time around.

For me and win or lose nothing beats or gets my sports fan blood pumping more then a Sox vs MFY playoff series. Even if it has to up the odds of bringing home a championship this year...it's still worth having it happen. Bring it on.

Now excuse me while I take a shower to wash off that dirty feeling of rooting for Yankees all night.
