I believe he was scheduled to pitch the one game playoff if the Tigers had won the 2nd game of that double header against the Angels. As great a job as Dick Williams did that year I never liked the pitching rotation he set up. I don't know why he didn't start Bell in game 6. Instead he started Gary Waslewski??? Stange could have started game 6 or game 7. Or start Stange in game 7 then bring Lonnie and all hands on deck after that. I think Williams used Stange and Bell out of the bullpen too much.

Wait. Waslewski went 5 1/3 and gave up 2 runs and the Sox won and you thought that was bad planning????
I just believe Stange would have been the better choice then Gary. Williams used Bell in relief too much. Either way we do know the Cardinals would have won game 7 no matter who started. They had the best in the game pitching in game 7. I do remember Waslewski when he was with the Yanks in 71 coming in to pitch late in relief when the Sox were beating the Yanks and the fans gave him kind of a sarcastic ovation.

Anyone remember what happened to John Wyatt that year? Pitched a lot, usually got the job done; then seemed to fall off the map the last week of the season. WS he was pretty much just a mop up guy.

Williams did juggle the pitching all season, not just the relievers but the starters as well, Lonnie excluded. Probably would not work in this day and age.

Bell lasted all of 2 innings in his game 3 start, giving up 5 hits and 3 runs. Waslewski relieved him and pitched 3 perfect innings. You could say he earned his game 6 start.
