I wonder if the Hill/Gillislee decision is made, and they park ways with Gillislee soon, giving him time to catch on.

I think you have way too many replaceable veterans making the 54. NE and a lot of teams cut veterans so they don't have to guarantee salary only to bring them back a week or two later. I can see Hill, one of Decker/Britt, Dwayne Allen and Brandon Bolden all fitting into that category.

Did Berrios not even get on the field last night? I thought he could be a candidate over one of the veteran WRs, but I don't see him in the boxscore after just 1 catch last week.

maybe hiding him to try and slip him to the Practice squad?

I think after next Friday that Gillislee may get traded and Ralph Webb will get about 30 carries against the Giants before he goes to the P-squad.
Washington might make sense... lost Guice for the season and the other options (Perine, Kelley, Marshall, Bibbs) are deeply underwhelming.

Any chance Will Tye can slide in and take Dwayne Allen's spot to save some money? Tye was out there with the first team and caught a pass from a scrambling Brady. How is Tye as a blocker? I found some old quotes from Tom Coughlin when they were both with the Giants that said he could block well but couldn't really find anything else.

Tye's strengths are Hollister's so I believe he would be redundant. With the Wynn injury, they need Allen's blocking ability moreso than they did a day ago.

I agree with this. Only one of Decker or Britt will make the team. Etc.

I agree with not listing Jason McCourty, and also agree with replacing Valentine with Butler.

We obviously don't see what the coaches see every day in practice and in the building, but why is Hoyer the backup? He doesn't move well, he has a noodle arm and he's small. It amazes me they kept Jimmy G for half a season as insurance (and they were hoping to sign him) but they did not go and upgrade the backup QB this offseason. Does anyone have any confidence in Hoyer as the backup?

No.

As for the brass, I doubt they were closely monitoring his abysmal performance in SF. The JG trade had a rushed aura around it, and it was probably sufficient that Hoyer knew the system and had been here before.

Agreed all-around.

Hoyer is awful.

He hasn't been able to practice as much and has been injured. Not much positive chatter on him because he hasn't done much. It feels like he's not going to make the cut with this trajectory. A lot can change and we don't know what the brass thinks are the usual caveats.

I doubt Belichick had been grinding much 2017 Hoyer tape, but they have pro scouts whose job it is to evaluate players around the league.

My picks from last time with markup:
QB (2) T.Brady, B.Hoyer - same
RB (6) S.Michel, R.Burkhead, J.Develin, J.White, B.Bolden, J.Hill - same
WR (6) C.Hogan, P.Dorsett, C.Patterson, K.Britt, M.Slater, B.Berrios R.McCarron (Edelman suspended) - McCarron so far seems to have the PR job by default
TE (3) R.Gronkowski, J.Hollister, R.Izzo - same, though I might be stubborn on the Izzo / Allen thing. This also is a situation where I wouldn't be
C (1) D.Andrews
G (3) S.Mason, J.Thuney, T.Karras
T (43) T.Brown, M.Cannon, I.Wynn (IR), L.Waddle - at some point they will need an 8th OL, but if everyone is healthy entering the season I could see them sticking with seven for the time being
DE (45) T.Flowers, A.Clayborn, D.Wise, D.Rivers, Geneo Grissom
DT (4) M.Brown, D.Shelton, V.Valentine A.Butler, L.Guy - that 2016 draft looks worse and worse
ILB(3) D.Hightower, E.Roberts, C.Sam, N.Grigsby, J.Bentley - Bentley's emergence makes Roberts, who doesn't play ST, an easy cut
OLB(3) K.VanNoy, M.Flowers, B.King - same
CB (5) S.Gilmore, E.Rowe, D.Dawson, J.Jones, J.Jackson - same
SS (3) P.Chung, N.Ebner, J.Richards - same
FS (2) D.McCourty, D.Harmon - same
ST (3) S.Gostkowski, J.Cardona, R.Allen - same

Following the pattern above...

I deleted Hill, but think he'll be one of those "we'll sign you right after Week 1" guys. Or possibly, "right after we put Michel on IR," depending on Sony's timeframe. If Hill gets scooped up (and they haven't traded Gillislee), they can bring MG or Webb back instead.

I deleted Decker as well, on the grounds that he hasn't shown anything. Ditto with Valentine on the defensive side.

I put Tobin in for Wynn, though Croston wouldn't surprise me, nor would signing someone else's cut for the fourth tackle role.

I added Keionta Davis, though I don't know whether he plays ST - if not, I'd like to make this a mulligan, and add Hill back instead. I also added Roberts - feels like he's one of those guys who BB likes for reasons I can't see. Speaking of, I added Richards and dropped Pleasant - better the guy who takes bad angles that you know, and all that.

I really want the season to start!

QB (2) T.Brady, B.Hoyer
RB (5) R.Burkhead, S.Michel, J.White, J.Hill, J.Develin
WR (5) C.Hogan, P.Dorsett, C.Patterson, K.Britt, M.Slater
TE (3) R.Gronkowski, D.Allen, J.Hollister
C (1) D.Andrews
G (3) S.Mason, J.Thuney, T.Karras
T (4) T.Brown, M.Cannon, L.Waddle, M.Tobin
DE (5) T.Flowers, A.Clayborn, D.Wise, D.Rivers, K.Davis
DT (4) M.Brown, D.Shelton, L.Guy, A.Butler
ILB(4) D.Hightower, J.Bentley, C.Sam, E.Roberts
OLB(3) K.VanNoy, M.Flowers, B.King
CB (6) S.Gilmore, E.Rowe, J.McCourty, J.Jones, J.Jackson, D.Dawson
SS (3) P.Chung, N.Ebner, J.Richards
FS (2) D.McCourty, D.Harmon
ST (3) S.Gostkowski, R.Allen, J.Cardona
Total players: 53

J Hill likely to be gobbled up by WASH if exposed. Perine and Marshall banged up last night, though not lost for the season.

around the way
I hope that they don't fuck around with Hill. He looks great. Gillislee looks putrid. They should do the latter a favor and let him catch on somewhere else. Hill, on the other hand, deserves a job here.

Does a player who gets cut free to sign anywhere at anytime or is he bound to the first team who claims him? IOW, if the Pats cut Hill with the intention, made known to Hill, that I they will re-sign him as soon as Michel goes on IR(DTR), can Hill reject any offers or is it out of his hands?

Same question for practice squad types: do they have to accept a claim?

Some veterans don't have to go through waivers and are instead free agents. Younger players who have practice squad eligibility have to go through waivers.

Only 6 OL seems pretty light. You’re 2 injuries away from Cardona or someone else unqualified logging meaningful snaps in a game.
