Pop heading to Cali to meet with Kahwi before the draft. A last ditch attempt to patch things up?
Either that or threaten him with a trade to Sacramento.Pop heading to Cali to meet with Kahwi before the draft. A last ditch attempt to patch things up?
I wonder if this is why PG is now more strongly considering reupping in OKC for the year. Maybe the super team gets delayed a year and LeBron does the same.Leonard wants a trade to Los Angeles, preferably the Lakers over the Clippers, league sources said. He has privately maintained that he no longer wants to play in San Antonio, and will eventually alert rival teams considering trades for him that his intentions are to sign in Los Angeles -- preferably with the Lakers -- when he can become a free agent in 2019, league sources said.
Ouch. Woj got owned. Timing seems to suggest that the Spurs may have a draft offer they’re considering.Man, Shams totally clowned Woj there, didn't he?
I guess we'll know by Thursday how the meeting went.
You have to come up with an additional 14 million in salary to make a trade if Rozier and Kawhi are the centerpieces of the dealI’d still be fine with giving the Spurs Rozier and the Sac pick for 1 year of Kawhi under Stevens tutelage on a championship caliber roster playing in Boston in front of a rabid fanbase and letting the chips fall where they may. No way I would do Jaylan or Kyrie for him — but Rozier and the pick is worth it IMO.
I would never do that deal for a rental not to mention the numbers aren't even close. First off, if a Kawhi deal ever was done (hypothetical as I don't feel Ainge would make a realistic offer to the Spurs) it would have to include Morris, both for his salary as well as his role essentially being eliminated. I honestly feel that the offer Ainge made at the deadline last winter was Morris and salary filler along with maybe a low 1st. That's the price for a rental.I’d still be fine with giving the Spurs Rozier and the Sac pick for 1 year of Kawhi under Stevens tutelage on a championship caliber roster playing in Boston in front of a rabid fanbase and letting the chips fall where they may. Yes, my point was more a response to not giving up anything of value now knowing that Kawhi only wants to play for the Lakers and will go there regardless in 2019. They could make it work with a sign-n-trade or whatever — the picks and anyone other than the core of KI-JL-JT-GH-AH, I would still do it.You have to come up with an additional 14 million in salary to make a trade if Rozier and Kawhi are the centerpieces of the deal
I would be totally fine with Rozier/Morris/Smart for Kawhi. The dude is a top 5 player — one year rental or not — it makes the Celtics the favorite. . . . There is zero chance that Kawhi goes for something as small as a Morris type and a low first round pick. Some team will think they can either 1) make a deep run in the playoffs thus making it worth it even if he leaves, or 2) be convinced that they can sign him long termI would never do that deal for a rental not to mention the numbers aren't even close. Smart is a FA.....he would have to choose San Antonio and they would have to make him a significant offer to beat teams like the Nets, Knicks, and Mavs as well as others.I would be totally fine with Rozier/Morris/Smart for Kawhi. Right. This is why we've never been a serious option for the Spurs. There is zero chance that Kawhi goes for something as small as a Morris type and a low first round pick. Anyone have the Vegas odds on the “league sources” being Magic and Rob Pelinka?Leonard wants a trade to Los Angeles, preferably the Lakers over the Clippers, league sources said. Yeah, no thanks. I’m not dealing Irving for the prayer that Porzingis can help the 2020 Celtics.Well, if we can't get Kawhi for oursleves, maybe we could help facilitate
BOS gets Kristaps Porzingis, Lonzo Ball, Lance Thomas
NYK gets Kyrie Irving, Guerschon Yabusele
SAS gets Brandon Ingram, Frank Ntilikina, Luol Deng
LAL gets Kawhi Leonard, Patty Mills
The cap projects to go up 7% to $108m next summer and the only salaries of significance on your books are Deng, Ball, and Ingram which can easily be cleared out.How does Kawhi sign with the Lakers as a free agent next year if they sign Lebron and Paul George (or Chris Paul) this year? They would be over the cap.
Or LeBron just goes somewhere else.PG and Lebron aren't signing in LAL to wait a year to put together their team. If they go there, either Kawhi is coming, or they are bringing in some other help which would preclude them from having space next year.
If Kawhi plays out the year, say hi to LA Clipper Kawhi in 2019
If Deng's salary could be easily cleared out the Lakers would have done it already. As for Ball, the crazy father and the no-talent brothers angling for NBA paychecks makes Lonzo difficult to move as well. The cap projects to go up 7% to $108m next summer and the only salaries of significance on your books are Deng, Ball, and Ingram which can easily be cleared out.
Deng isn't yet expiring. By next summer it will be easy to move under the posters question. It's hard to take that Lonzo is difficult to move very seriously though. If Deng's salary could be easily cleared out the Lakers would have done it already. For me, Tatum and Brown are untouchable, no matter who it is-- even LeBron. The big asset Ainge should dangle is Kyrie. There's flight risk if he doesn't resign, and repeater tax risk if he does.
Heavens no.Well, from all reports the Spurs don't want Lonzo.
So the Lakers (trying to clear salary for the LeBron-PG13-Kawhi trifecta) call Ainge and offer Lonzo for Rozier and the Sacramento pick. Deal? What if Ainge counters with the Memphis pick?
Looks pretty likely the spurs don’t trade Kawhi to LA & he signs there next year, pg13 does a 1 & 1 with okc & lebron stays in Cleveland for one more year. How does Kawhi sign with the Lakers as a free agent next year if they sign Lebron and Paul George (or Chris Paul) this year? I think it’s way more likely that this LA super team doesn’t come to fruition than it delays by another year.Looks pretty likely the spurs don’t trade Kawhi to LA & he signs there next year, pg13 does a 1 & 1 with okc & lebron stays in Cleveland for one more year.
They delay the super team by a year.
Can anyone offer specific figures to clarify how apocalyptic the repeater tax would become for a roster built around four max players (Horford, Haywayd, Irving, and Leonard)? Is there any chance that ownership would be willing to pay that tax for a 4-5 year window in which the team could potentially hang multiple banners (and see the franchise value rise)? The problem with Kawhi for the most rumored package is the cap apocalypse that the Celtics might endure
This only works if the team Kawhi is on agrees to sign and trade him like the Clippers-Rockets CP3 deal.Deng isn't yet expiring. By next summer it will be easy to move under the posters question. It's hard to take that Lonzo is difficult to move very seriously though.
What are you proposing we dangle him for? A pick? If it's for Kawhi, we're in the same situation with regards to next year. If it's for a pick, I think Hayward and Horford would justifiably be ultra pissed. You don't punt on a potential championship quality team merely to hedge that he might not resign. Especially since he seems pretty happy here. I think trading Kyrie is trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist. For me, Tatum and Brown are untouchable, no matter who it is-- even LeBron. I'm just saying that as among Tatum, Brown and Kyrie, I would be willing to part with Kyrie before the other two. What are you proposing we dangle him for? A pick? You would trade Kyrie + picks for Doncic or Bamba? That is nutsBut in the unlikely event that Kyrie plus one or more of next year's four picks can fetch a Doncic or a Bamba, I'm fine with that too.
LeBron isn't really young enough to be delaying anything by a year.Looks pretty likely the spurs don’t trade Kawhi to LA & he signs there next year, pg13 does a 1 & 1 with okc & lebron stays in Cleveland for one more year.
They delay the super team by a year.
Call me nuts, then, because yes, I would if it means keeping Horford, Smart and Rozier. You would trade Kyrie + picks for Doncic or Bamba? That is nuts
Have a look at the table below. Triggering the repeater tax requires being over the tax line four years out of five. Assuming they hold on to Irving (as the rumour states they want to). If they include Rozier and Morris in the outgoing column (along with Marcus on a sign & trade), they can get down to about $120 million for nine roster spots.
This isn’t even your worst take in the past 20 posts.Call me nuts, then, because yes, I would if it means keeping Horford, Smart and Rozier.
If the Celtics are willing to include both MEM and SAC, that's a tough offer for other contenders to top, unless the Spurs are high on Ingram or Ball. That team is probably the straight-up favorites too, just because no one would ever score on a Hayward-Brown-Kawhi-Tatum-Horford lineup.Yes that's the deal to offer. Does it get beaten? Probably. If not the C's are co-favorites for next year.
If everything lines up right -- and only then -- Leonard is good enough, and still young enough, that you probably hold your nose and deal Brown in exchange. If anything about Leonard feels off or unknowable, Boston can sit tight and feel fine. Brown is that intriguing.
Or they get impatient and replace Kawhi with Boogie. Holy shit that’d be fun to watch (the implosion, I mean).Looks pretty likely the spurs don’t trade Kawhi to LA & he signs there next year, pg13 does a 1 & 1 with okc & lebron stays in Cleveland for one more year.
They delay the super team by a year.
Would be even more nuts for a lottery team to give up a top 3 pick for 1 year of Kyrie, which is why it’s never going to happen. You would trade Kyrie + picks for Doncic or Bamba? That is nuts
I have to imagine the Lakers would be mildly stoked if this goes through. They get to nab another lottery pick and can sign two guys in a year that already know how to play with each other. Not sure I like it from the Cavs perspective though. They probably still lose to the warriors and also lose out on the pick after the duo leaves.A couple site are saying Cavs offered Love and the 8 for Kawhi....no confirmation that I can find but its out there
The Cavaliers are not actively shopping All-Star forward Kevin Love heading into Thursday's NBA draft, multiple sources told ESPN on Wednesday.
Lot of interesting stuff here per usual from Zach.Should Jaylen be traded for KL? Zach Lowe breaks it down: http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/23847072/zach-lowe-kawhi-leonard-jaylen-brown-celtics-spurs-trades
Seems really light, actually. Their pick is probably in the 20s and who knows what the Heat pick will end up at.Reports now that Spurs are set on keeping Kawhi or trading him to EC team. Philly must be all over this.
Saric
Covington
2019 #1
Miami 2021
Would be very risky given Kawhi’s contract situation but Celtics can’t beat that without giving up a piece they don’t want to give up.
Saric and Covington are both starters on good contracts and Kawhi is a rental. I think that’s a good offer for a guy who wants to leave and in line with other comparable situations.Seems really light, actually. Their pick is probably in the 20s and who knows what the Heat pick will end up at.
Agreed. I certainly wouldn’t want to try and top that deal. As a matter of fact, Spurs should probably jump on that if it ever gets offered.Saric and Covington are both starters on good contracts and Kawhi is a rental.
