Surprised there wasn't a thread yet.

I'm impressed with the early season play of my Big Red, who with 10 freshmen on the roster are 9-1 and #5 in the polls after a convincing victory over BU at MSG last weekend.

They are really good but BU stinks this year which is very surprising with the amount of high draft picks they have. I personally think Dave Quinn is a terrible X and O's coach.

Wasn't Kenmore Kollege ranked #2 in preseason? You're right about Quinn but they have too much talent to be poor. Hopefully difference between York and Quinn makes up the difference between the talent of the 2 schools, this weekend.

It's kind of stupid to have these games in the first semester, but what do I know.

Hopefully a "we have football" chant comes out tomorrow night.

Kenmore's 9 points from its 2nd line, give it a 7-4 wild win at Kelley Rink. Tomorrow should be a fun one at Greek God of Goals Gameroom (Agganis Arena)

Ryan Donato had a hat trick against Quinnipiac. He probably could play for the Bruins right now and be pretty good.

Harvard had a slow start to season, but clearly was a level up from QU - very impressive to watch. Faster, better stickhandling, etc etc. QU goalie a little off. QU is having an uneven season - no one can consistently put puck in the net. Power play setup is just bad, not sure why they are using it (maybe they changed up because no one can score). 0-0 Tie v. Dartmouth the next night, despite 43 shots. Dartmouth got beat by Princeton 9-3 night before; QU beat Princeton 6-3 earlier in the week.

EDIT: mis-typed Princeton-Dartmouth game in original post

They have major scoring talents and frankly just don't have the horses up front to score consistently. I don't think things are going to magically get better in the second half of the season. What you are seeing is the effects of misses on the recruiting trail with certain players on the roster and its killing them this season. Shortridge has been fine this year. While he has a losing record he is in the top 10 in the country for goaltenders. Its not his fault the team can't score in front of him.

Agree on Shorty - he played well v Dartmouth and is having a solid seaso I've seen 6 games so far, and besides the Yale game, they seem to miss a lot of open looks. I did miss the Brown game (5-0 win). Saw Cornell, Colgate, Yale, UMass, Harvard and Dartmouth (1-4-1).

Maybe I'm the jinx.

One of the crazier things this season is the ever-increasing chance that Hockey East could have just 1 team in the national tournament.

Providence, Northeastern, and Boston College all sit 12, 13, and 14 right now, but they're all being dragged down by Hockey East's abysmal out-of-conference record right now. Those 3 clubs have a fine line to walk the rest of the way, and I have a hard time seeing any HE program below them in the standings surging ahead into the tournament.

Regarding NU, this is a really exciting but frustrating year for them. Jim Madigan has finally brought a legit goalie to campus in Cayden Primeau and they've had one of their best starts in years. They should compete with BC for #1 in Hockey East the rest of the way.

Unfortunately (in classic NU fashion), they've got a few big things going against them: #1) Garrett Cockerill, the team's #1 defenseman left the program 2 weeks ago for undisclosed reasons. #2) The above mentioned issues that weaken their chances for an at-large bid. #3) The Olympics. Dylan Sikura, Jeremy Davies, and Adam Gaudette are the three best players on the team at this point and all 3 of them seem likely to be going to South Korea in February. Just in time to miss the home stretch and the Beanpot. Which, if NU loses this year, will make an even 30 years of Beanpot failure.

Don't get me wrong, it's absolutely fantastic for the program that these guys may have the Olympic opportunity, but god is the timing frustrating.

Update - no one got picked for the Olympic team and NU wakes up this morning first place in Hockey East. Long way to go but a lot of optimism right now around the program.

And beanpot champs. Finally.

(Surprised there was no beanpot thread unless I missed it)

Was a pretty impressive game Both goalies were good, Primeau kept BU off the board when they had a lot of possession time.

Damn that top line is impressive. I couldn't look away when they were on the ice. On the power play they were beyond deadly - almost clinical. The interior passing was pretty as hell. Defensively the Huskies were solid.

A lot there for NU to be proud of. It will be interesting to see if they can carry it through the Hockey East tourney.

I thought BU largely controlled the 5-on-5 play and had most of the good scoring chances, but they took three stupid penalties in their own zone and Northeastern capitalized on all three (par for the course under Quinn). Hats off to their fans as well, they were great throughout.

NU alum, started following them in 1989. Remember thinking back then that the Sox winning the WS was so improbable and the Beanpot was two wins in February, this won't take long to celebrate on campus. Well, three WS and a 20 year reunion later, NU finally gets the monkey off their back. What has been my longest, darkest sports day of the year is just pure joy for the 1st time.....ever.

That BU forecheck is really good. Watching them hem in Harvard last week had me nervous how NU would handle it.
Kept play in the NU end for long stretches, but didn't generate a lot of good scoring chances. Compared to years gone by, it was like they traded uniforms. Gritty, pressure with a lack of finishing and no breaks vs skilled forwards who punish you for every mistake plus solid, mistake free D and goaltending.

Somehow last night was even better than the night they won Hockey East. Winning the conference title in 2016 was surreal and shocking. Last night was just a giant sigh of relief, a release of emotion by everyone involved with this university. I had tears in my eyes at the final horn.

Madigan has done an incredible job with this program. From Kevin Roy, Josh Manson, Matt Benning, and Zach Aston-Reese, to now Gaudette, Sikura, Nolan Stevens, and Cayden Primeau.

I hope Gaudette or Sikura gets the Hobey, but I have suspicion that it'll go to Notre Dame's goalie. I'm still pissed ZAR didn't win it last year.

Lots of work to do still. It'd be a shame if this team can't make the tournament. A couple of bad losses to UConn have them on the bubble still.

And a sweep at the hands of my school Quinnipiac which is hurting NU as well.

I'll be at the Northeastern game in Worcester on Saturday if anyone is going. Not sure where my seat is or if I'm doing anything before/after.

NU robbed of a goal that would have put them up 2-1 in the 2nd. Tied heading into the 3rd now, winner plays BU. Huge opportunity for Northeastern to get some sports recognition by pulling this out and taking care of business vs. BU, a team they are 3-0 vs this year.

Was really surprised to see their first line struggle like they did. Michigan absolutely earned it tonight.

Great game. It's always jarring to me to watch college hockey - makes me appreciate the pros that much more. It seems like reaction time and skating ability are the biggest things separating college from pros. Is the ice the same dimensions in NHL and NCAA? Quinn Hughes on Michigan is a total stud.

The ice was the same dimensions as the NHL for the regionals, because they were all in pro rinks.

The schools vary from NHL-size all the way up to Olympic.

In Hockey East:
Olympic - UNH
200x95 - UMass
200x90 - BU, Northeastern
200x87 - BC
NHL - Others

Outside Hockey East, I think it's split between Olympic and NHL, mainly, with a few odd sizes thrown in. ND is 200x90. Harvard is 204x87.

Anyone watching this? Notre Dame showing some fight here against what I think is a superior Minnesota Duluth team. Morris let up a softy on the second MD goal but has been really solid since.
